Fritzy

"I'm bored."

I had my vet out last week to check out Fritzy's hoof. She had a hoof abscess at the end of August that I could not get a handle on, well what I thought was a hoof abscess. She had all the classic signs of a hoof abscess and since Fritzy is prone to getting them I was sure that is what it was. But now I don't know if that is what she had. When my vet came out she checked for a hoof abscess, but Fritzy did not react to the hoof tester at all. So my vet did a lameness exam and she was a 4/5 on the lameness scale. Then she did a nerve block to pinpoint where the pain could be coming from. She started by blocking her heel and she was now a 1/5. So we now know that her pain was coming from that area. My vet decided we should do x-rays to see what was going on.

Later that afternoon my vet called me back with the results and Fritzy's Navicular bone looked good but there was an irregularity on the coffin bone. She wanted to come out the next morning and take more x-rays of that specific area. She was concerned that Fritzy could have a hairline fracture and wanted to rule that out before moving on to deciding what to do treatment wise for her. The next morning my vet came out and took a few more x-rays. Again my vet found an irregularity of the lateral side of the coffin bone and wanted to send her x-rays to another vet clinic for a second opinion before we decided to do more x-rays and making a final decision on what is wrong. So at this time I have no more info on what is going on with Fritzy's hoof. My vet said there could be a chance she does have a really deep abscess since Fritzy is prone to getting them. She has run a few things by me in regards to treating Fritzy for different scenarios. One of them is if she has a hairline fracture, she will be on stall rest for 6 months. Since I don't exactly have a barn, we would have to turn one of our run in sheds into a stall. We have a very large 16 x 24' run in shed that could be divided into 2 12 x 16' stalls. We would have to put mats on the ground because Fritzy paws like crazy and would have holes dug everywhere. Right now Fritzy is locked into a 12 x 24' run to limit her movement. She is not a happy horse. She hates being locked up.

I am hoping to hear back from my vet sometime in the next day or 2. I really want to know what is going on. I hate not knowing. And I want my horse to start feeling better. And I really want it to just be a hoof abscess.....

I can only imagine how frustrating that must be. I hate waiting for news like that. I hope everything goes well, hang in there.

I hope it's just an abscess and she won't have to be on stall rest. Looks like she'd go crazy in there!

Sure hope you get news soon and that news is good , or at the very least manageable

Poor Fritzy... I hope the news is just a deep abcess... Fingers crossed for a manageable issue.

My horse Cowboy had a serious coffin bone fracture with displacement into the coffin joint on the left front-and he also had stall rest in a 12x12 for 6 months. I had my farrier put him in a bar shoe with pad to stabilize the hoof. As you know, he had full recovery, but keeping him happy and settled in that 12x12 was a bit of a job. I always kept a horse next to him and they had to take turns "babysitting"--and I gave him grass hay so that he could constantly be eating. It wasn't ideal, but at least he's alive and I've had many good years on the trail with him. Good luck.

Oh I am hoping it is just a abcess as well, 6 months of stall rest would be pretty awful.

So frustrating! Hopefully it's not anything serious and she'll be back to her old self soon. Stall rest can be tedious for a lot of horses, but that's what you have to do sometimes. Food is their greatest companion...

Linda, that is something my vet talked about too, putting a bar shoe on her. But she has been floating around a few possibilities of what we could be dealing with and how we will treat her. I still haven't heard back from her yet on the 2nd opinion and I am stressing out.
You have eased my mind a little though reminding me about Cowboy's coffin bone fracture. Just knowing that even though it sounds bad they do heal. And Fritzy only gets grass hay so if she has to be on stall rest, I would definitely be pumping it in her to keep her happy! Plus it helps that I don't work (very rarely) and I am here pretty much all the time!

goodness I hope it is nothing serious ....having to clean out a stall for 6 months would be awful...let alone your poor Fritzy going mad with boredom

oh heavens....i feel for you (and for fritzy). it is just awful to have to restrain an animal. hopefully this will turn out to be something that can be taken care of quickly.

Well as you know now, it is worst case scenario. So sorry you have to go through this. It will be a challenge but we love our horses and will do what we can for them and I'm sure it will heal up! I'm itchin' to see some new photos of Miss Rio...maybe some video?? ;-)

Fritzy may be has a serious condition. Hopefully she will be fine.

I just saw your response, PG, and now you've had it confirmed. I bet she'll do great with the treatment, and it's so good that you're home to keep her company. That was the hardest part,of course. I felt pretty sorry for Cowboy, but I don't think he minded as much as I thought he did. ;) Good luck--from someone who has been in one of the worst of those situations and had an appt to put him down the same day I decided not to!!...and now am living five years later with a wonderful SOUND trail horse.

Fingers crossed it is an abscess (had to deal with my first one this year and it sucks) and not a fracture!
