I got busy pulling all my tack out of the "tack room", A.K.A the garage, and took it out to my grooming area. I then went out to get my fuzzy, dirty, little Arab. I spent about half an hour grooming her. She was filthy. This horse loves mud. She is always caked in it. Once semi clean, I saddled her up and headed to the round pen. Yes, this girl was finally going to ride one of her horses! Unfortunately I get very limited riding in during the winter, due to pretty nasty weather we get this time of year. On top of that, I only have an outdoor arena, which tends to get quite slippery. We had quite the big rainfall the night before, so I knew the round pen would be a little slick.
I have never ridden Brandy in a round pen before. But when I had my panels set up to "arena" size, I usually used one end of it, especially when loping. Brandy isn't a fully trained horse, and I spend a lot of time doing training with her, like getting that nice and slow jog and lope. We are even still working on side passing, turn on the forehand/haunches and many other things.
Brandy doesn't look to thrilled about being put back into work. The one thing that drives me crazy is that her long pony fur turns yellow in the winter. It doesn't help that she coats herself in mud and poo.

I started with lunging first. This girl has some serious spunk, and if she hasn't been ridden in awhile, I always lunge her first. How she goes from this furry, yellow, muddy girl:

To this......amazes me. She doesn't even look like the same horse.

Brandy bucked like crazy! I am glad I wasn't on her! But she has always been crazy on the lunge line. Not totally crazy, but she gets some serious bucks in. Chance was watching the whole thing and got all worked up, running and bucking in her pasture. Once I felt Brandy had settled down, I put her bridle on and climbed aboard.
We worked on circles, slowing her jog down and then I decided to lope her. I was wondering how the lope would go, considering I hadn't ridden her in a round pen before, but she was really good. She usually crow hops at the lope, something I had been working on, but she didn't crow hop once. She was even loping nice and slow, almost western pleasure slow.

After about half an hour of riding, I just walked around the round pen to cool her out. It was time to head back to the house. We exited the round pen and stopped by Chance. She has never seen anyone on a horse before.

She had been eyeballing me the whole time. I always wonder what they think when they see someone on a horse for the first time.

The rest of the crew were taking a nap in the 65 degree weather. I don't blame them one bit.

Once I got back to the house, I decided I would attempt a face clip on my fuzzy girl. This is the before picture. Unfortunately, my cordless clippers just aren't powerful enough to do the job, so she has a partial face clip. I ended up going out and buying electric clippers. I will be finishing the job later this week and will post the after pictures later.

I had a wonderful day, nothing better then spending it with my girl!

Yeah, I've got a white pony that looks pretty grungy, too. Takes a long time just to get him clean enough to saddle. I liken it to grooming a Toyota SUV that has the spontaneous acceleration problem LOL!
Hurray! You got to ride! I used to have a horse that was mostly white and she got so dirty! I am glad Gilly is a bay, he gets plenty dirty but it doesn't show so much.
I am planning a ride today since it's going to be in the upper 60's here. Going to take my hand held Garmin and see how far we go, it also checks speed...LOL...with Gilly it will be SLOW!
Good for you riding your own horse! Sometimes it's hard to get up the energy to do it after working, I know. I really need to clean tack before I ride with a saddle. Here, the leather gets so dry if you don't oil it regularly. I worry about using it after a long sitting spell that it might crack. So, I often ride bareback, especially since the ground has such poor footing. It saves grooming time and energy too.
My mares look just like that, grungy, hairy, and yellow in the winter. Funny, I was comparing winter and summer photos of Nadia last night wondering when/if she'll ever look good again.
Chance looks so big! Will you be ponying her with the others? I love how her mane is all on one side. Yalla's is all over the place.
Ok so Indigo has teflon hair. I am serious that girl rolls around like nobody's business in the mud and once it's dry it comes right off and she looks clean again. Weird horse.
I can't wait to see the after picture!
It was an absolutely gorgeous day wasn't it?
I think most horses look rough this time of year--mine sure do. I trailed out for a trail ride Monday and my friend's horse looked like it was ready for the show ring---mine, I was kicking the mud off him--and not too successfully.
I bet Chance was excited--Beautiful gets the same way when I ride out. I'm pretty sure she'd like to come along.
Glad you had a good ride, there's nothing to beat it, is there? Max would be that dirty if he didn't have a rug on, but Barnaby seems to be clean and white no matter what the weather, very strange.
So nice for you to enjoy some time on your own horse! With all the hours you work.
Looking goooooood! I didn't get to ride in the nice weather, I'm jealous. Glad you had fun, though!
Ahhhh, our weather has been the same! (Only warmer!) I rode for about 3 hours on Saturday, in my english saddle and in the arena. Gasp! It was such a wonderful beautiful spring day. I bet she enjoyed being ridden just as much as you enjoyed riding. After such a long winter break, I really think the horses actually look forward to doing something more than just standing around. Hopefully the weather will stay nice from now on!
We have the opposite problem. Our palomino turns almost white in the winter.
Great weather up there too!! Feels good to get on these ponies after a long winter!!
You'll have to teach Chance to pony along with your horses. They get introduced to everything you do before you ever ride them. Works wonders!
It was a super nice day here too!! I LOVE spring! And yeah, my horses are ugly fuzzy winter horses, but turn into pretty slick horses!! It's crazy how all that winter hair makes them look funky! Good riding!!
Lucky you, it's been wet and cloudy here for days.
She cleans up well, doesn't she? :)
It's nice to get light later now....have you been working with your filly in the evenings?
Pony Girl~ No dear sis, I have not worked Chance after work yet. There was a wind storm one evening, and tonight was St Patties Day dinner. I might not get time to work her until Sunday, have hockey games both Fri and Sat. I need to finish Brandy's face clip, but that won't happen until Sunday now.
Glad you got to spend some time with your girl. We are hoping to get out for a ride on Sunday. I have been such a bad mom. Haven't been the stable in three days. Am going to go tomorrow. To much going on until the end of this week.
I love the transformation from yak to sleek, golden Fjords!! It is moving from one point to the other that is disgusting!
Seems when I brush my furry ponies right now all I'm doing is bringing more dirt to the surface. They all need a good bath and to shed out all that hair!
Glad you had a good day and good time with your girl.
I just love pictures over the horses ears! They're my favoriate!!

It is always amazing the transformation that takes place. Right now I have horse hair up to my eyeballs! Grooming six horses is a full time job but you know all about that! Is Brandy a purebred Arabian? She has the softest eyes. I have only seen Arabians at my trainer's barn and they have that really dished profile. I just thought they all had them? I don't know much about the breed. I do know he said they're a hotter breed than a Quarter Horse. He had two of them and Saddlebred Stallions.....gorgeous. Looks like you had a great day! We have more snow headed our way boooo!
Glad you got to be a COWGIRL with your horse today!!!
Yay! You got to ride one of your own horses :)
And nice weather too lol
I rode Voodoo outside yesterday, in just a sweatshirt. Weather took a nasty turn today, I almost had to wear my winter coat to work :(
Luanne~ Brandy is a half Arab half Paint. Arabs do have a dished face, Brandy has a slight dish, it is more pronounced in the summer without all that hair!
You know it amazes me how when their winter coat comes in I always think they are so fuzzy and cute but then by the end of winter I am SO sick of it LOL!!! She doesn't look bad to me!! One of my 3 yr olds that I just sold is solid white so I know your pain! I am so thrilled to hear that she had no hopping at the lope!! Good girl! I love the picture of Chance when your on Brandy! She almost looks like she's looking down in avoidance of seeing what the future holds for her LOL!!
So jealous! I'm still waiting for my first post winter ride. I think the ring is finally dry enough but I have to pick up hay this weekend and I'm afraid busyness is going to prevent me from riding once more.
Sounds wonderful! Hopefully when Chance saw you on the hose she thought to herself, "Oh, so this is what is supposed to happen...I will be carrying this person one day."
I love this! You got to ride your beautiful fuzzy, muddy girl! Yay!
You guys looks great! And I giggled at Chance's expression when you rode by. It's good for her to see you up there. Even though you are working and training Brandy, you are also training Chance, too.
I'm so happy for you that you got to ride.
It's also a relief to see we're not the only ones with a lot of mud in our paddocks. blah!

Sixty Five degrees! Aren't you the lucky ones!
hah! I got a charge out of your detail about Scout eyeballing you as a rider! I wonder if she is putting two and two together!!
