The first full day we were there, my mom, two of my aunts, one of our cousin's, my sister and I went for a long trail ride. They wanted to show us the ride to the river, where we could stop and eat our lunch. We weren't in a hurry because the others in our group would arrive later that evening.

We were riding, riding and riding and they couldn't quite find the trail that would take us to the river. They had only been on this trail one time, last year, so it wasn't an easy task. We decided to turn around and find a good place to stop and eat our lunch. There were a couple trails my aunt wanted to check out and they could be the ones that would take us to the river. Once we finished eating lunch, we headed back down the trail to see if we could find the river.

At times the dust became so thick that it felt like we were in the middle of a forest fire.

We took another trail that my aunt felt could be the right one to lead us to the river. It became quite intense in spots, some steep hills that go up and down, around falling logs and trees. My sister's horse had been a total brat on this ride. He seemed to get worse going up and down the hills. He would crow hop, buck and he even reared, which is not normal. I was terrified for my sister. I was already riding a horse that I have had some serious confidence issue's on, and seeing someone else's horse act up brought back some not so good memories. I was just hoping Fritzy and my sister's boy would keep it together.

Once we made it through the worst of the trails (some people might love what we were riding through, I prefer less difficult trails) it looked like we were heading in the right direction to find water.

The river at last! But we still had to navigate some rough terrain to get down there.

We did it. We got down to the river and rode our horses in to cool off.

I have crossed small streams before with Fritzy, but have never ridden her in a river. I was wondering how she would do. She loved it. She drank tons of water, looked around and was totally relaxed.

After letting the horses cool off, we headed back to the ranch. It ended up being about a 4 1/2 hour ride. Fritzy did really good, and even lead the ride at times. I was very proud of her.
The next day we went on a shorter ride. We included some of the other pony cousins that weren't there to ride the first day. We did a couple short trails, and had a photo shoot by the tepee's. Fritzy didn't want to get too close to them, so most of my pictures didn't turn out too well. Fritzy also lead half the way on this ride. We rode up and down hills, through a dry creek bed and along a cliff. I didn't do so well riding along the cliff, but Fritzy handled it really well. And she didn't even spook when a hawk flew right in front of her.

At this point in the trip, riding Fritzy on trails she has never been on, up and down steep hills, riding through a river, riding on a cliff and riding by tepee's, my confidence went through the roof. Everything was going so well....................until the arena.................. Stay tuned for part two.......

Sounds like a great start ! I hope the arena story doesn't involve you being injured
Looks like fun - but what about that arena?!
Hope the arena story doesn't turn out too bad because the first part seemed great. You are blessed to have so many horsey people in your family. I have none, that's why I had to create my own via my children:)
Wow! What an adventure! I'm guessing it was Desert Rose that discovered those more 'rugged' trails to explore. eeek!
I'm glad that Pony Girl wasn't hurt when My Boy was acting up. I wonder what got into him? Maybe he was bothered by all that dust. Yikes! That sure was a lot of dust! I think I would have wanted to wear a bandana or Cowgirl Rag over my nose and mouth.
Fritzy sounds like she might have enjoyed the trails better than the arena. But I bet you handled it like a pro.
(Unlike me...who seems to always get hurt. bleh!)

Oh I'm so sorry to hear your sis's boy was being a turkey!! Hopefully he got better?! Sounds like a great first day for your and Fritzy! Now I'm on the edge of my seat for the arena story!!
Now THAT looks like fun! That's my idea of a vacation. Can't wait for part 2!
Sounds like a ton of fun. Your poor sis. Maybe his saddle was buggin him?
I can't wait to read more.
Wow, what fun, but I probably couldn't have ridden for 4 1/2 hours, you all are some serious riders. I would have to work up to that long of a ride.
How wonderful that your family all gets together like that, no one else in my family rides so my adventure won't be too exciting with only me and Gilly. Now if I took Pokey along....hum...now that might be an adventure!! LOL
I can't believe your sister's boy was being such a stinker pot! I hope he calmed down in the end.
It sounds like you had such a wonderful time, but now I'm worried about the arena - oh boy!
Oh, sure, leave us hanging!
I wonder if My Boy's hocks were bothering him? Up and down is hard on hocks.
Dang it that was such a good uplifting post I was so hoping fritzy was making a turn around with you....will stay tuned...
Your Pony Cousin Stampedes are always an adventure.
Wow! Sounds like an adventure. Good girl Fritzy came through for you!!! That is too bad about your sis' boy acting up. Maybe he had a mean sandspur or ouchy thing on his saddle pad or girth (cinch?). Maybe he was a tired boy from all that trail riding! I sure would be tired - 4+ hours! Wow! I can't wait to read the next part!
Awww...it was good to see pics of your family. Is Pony Girl ever going to come back to blogging???
Too bad about My Boy. Maybe something was hurting him??
I thought about you gals riding in all of that dust and heat. I guess it was just as hot over here as it was over there though. : )
Can't wait to read more!!!
I'm surprised you were able to get that picture of the river from up above, because of the height! :) You forgot to mention that My Boy was much better the second ride! That first ride, I really think it was the new bit I was using or some equipment issue/dusty sandy boots rubbing on his legs. I can't think of any other thing other than ride order, since he was perfect the next day after I switched back to the other bit and eliminated the boots. Oh well, we need to try to get in another trail ride so I can test my theory! :-) Fritzy was really good on the trails! You should be proud of her!
Forgot to say, the above comment is by PonyGirl!
What a wonderful time we had! Most of the horses ha a moment some time or other! Like running away into a fenced pasture of 20 acres when you mom was trying to load you in the horse trailer! Bad BOY!
it looks like such a fantastic ride! beautiful scenery --- nice long trails. sounds difficult, though with the rough terrain. glad to hear my boy did better the next day. looking forward to part2. by the way -- how hot is hot for you westerners? around here if it is in the upper 80 degree range we consider it too hot to ride...
Pony Girl~ From that picture it looked like I was right on the edge of the cliff, but I was actually far enough away that I didn't get that sick, scared of heights feeling, like when we rode along that other cliff the next day.
John and Regina~ The temps on our trip were from the mid 80's to upper 90's. We still ride when it is that hot, but sometimes we will ride early in the morning or later in the evening when it cools down. It does cool down pretty quickly here. The only issue we get with the heat is the humidity and we are lucky to not have that many hot, hot days here, thank goodness!
Congrats on how great Fritzy was for part 1.
Hope part 2 doesn't have too much drama
Nothing like just a bit of success on your problem child to send your confidence soaring. OK, I'm ready for the arena story and to find out who is this year's Rodeo Princess.
Cruel!! We want part two! I can't wait to hear about the rest of your trip. I'm glad Fritzy was being such a good girl on the trails. :)
That looks like so much fun! I am glad to see Pony Girl, maybe you will tell her that I miss her blogging very much. I love those reins you have--are they PINK??? Fritzy sure looks perfect next to those teepees even if she didn't feel that way! It is so fun to "go along" on your trail ride! I wonder how my Lilly would be able to handle the trails that you did. Can't wait to hear about the arena!? I love that you have given us a cliffhanger, Hollywood style. Maybe one day your blog will be made into a movie!!
Somehow I always manage to get my PONY COUSINS to blindly follow me up and down any kind of trail...although that kind of dust is just NOT for me!!! The desert can be dusty at times but NEVER like that! I am sooooo proud of all my cousins who 6 years ago had either given up horses or had never been into them...you've come a long way cowgirls!
