GROSS ALERT- IF YOU DO NOT LIKE BLOOD PLEASE STOP READING NOW!!
I think I mentioned last Spring that Fritzy had a huge bump on her neck and I called the vet, only to cancel the appointment because I talked to someone at work and my vet at work and he told me to put Surpass on it. He even said that if it was an abscess that they usually drain on the inside. Well it took a couple weeks to go down, and it never went away completely. A small lump stayed on her neck throughout the summer. A week ago while I was feeding my horses, I noticed that Fritzy was having a hard time getting her head down to the ground to eat her hay. I immediately knew what was going on. I jumped the fence and sure enough, that big bump was back on her neck. She had the same symptoms as before, but this time the bump was bigger, way bigger. It was probably the size of both my hands put together and stuck out about an inch or 2. I called my vet and set up an appointment. I was not going to let this go. Something was going on, and something that needed fixed asap.
I had to work the day my vet came out. My OH was here and he kept me well informed of what was going on. He also kept sending me pictures of the entire process. BLOODY PICTURES AHEAD!!!!
The pictures were all taken by cell phone, so the quality is poor but you will see what is going on. My vet J, shaved Fritzy's neck and took ultrasound to see what she was dealing with. She and I had talked about what it could be and her first guess without seeing it was an abscess. Once she got here and saw it, she knew that that is exactly what it was. Actually there were 2 bumps, but with all of Fritzy's winter fur, I did not see or feel the 2nd bump.

The ultrasound showed many pockets of pus inside and it was very deep. It was very difficult to get to because the absecces were walled off behind the muscle.

Blood and pus poured out once she lanced it.

This process took a long time. She had to make sure she got out all the pus.

This is what came out of the abscess. This is what's on the ground, and it is at least the size of a man's size 11 boot. My OH just forgot to get his foot in the picture.

Blood still coming out. But now there isn't anymore pus. This picture is actually rotated wrong, I could not get this picture to rotate the right way. The top of Fritzy's neck is on the left of the pix.

Then J took a piece of gauze and ran it through one hole of Fritzy's neck and back through the other hole and tied it off. This is the drain.

So Fritzy is on Bute, antibiotics, a Nolvasan flush inside the neck and hotpacks. She can get her head down now, and that is actually really good for her because it stimulates drainage.
My vet J said this is the worst abscess she has seen. She couldn't believe that Fritzy did not get sick or have any other issues due to this abscess. She said that it was a sterile abscess and basically her body was fighting it and walled it off behind the muscle and kept it contained there. I know, very confusing stuff. She believes that this all started last Spring from her vaccinations. She had her vaccinations about 2-3 weeks before I noticed the first bump. I am kicking myself in the ass right now for NOT keeping that vet appointment when I first saw it. I hate it when people talk me out of having the vet out!! I need to do what I feel is right, and I should have just listened to my gut. Instead I listened to other people that said "oh don't have the vet out, they charge you an arm and a leg, and it is probably just this and this will take care of it!" and yes, that person did come out to look at Fritzy the first time and told me what I should do. Then I talked to the work vet. But I will not do that again. I am usually the most OCD pet owner and call the vet over everything, no matter how minor something looks. I will keep to that from now on.
Fritzy feels much better. We turned Brandy and Fritzy out in the grass pasture and moved Chance down to my sister's boys old pasture. It is bigger and closer to the house. I think she really likes it!!
I have been crazy busy, again. So I haven't had time for reading blogs or posting on my own. I would really like life to slow down sometime soon. My dad was here last week to put in our kitchen backsplash and bathroom counter. It looks awesome!! It is almost done. Still working on unpacking when I have a few spare minutes, but that is definitely an ongoing process!
We are having Thanksgiving here with my OH's family. I can't wait for them all to see the house! So excited for that! I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!

Hay...that is EXACTLY what my cellulitus looked like, it was the size if avery laarge pear!!!
Glad you got it taken care of.
Glad you got it all taken care of! Poor baby.
I started giving my old mares shots in the back of the leg, because she gets so sore, and wont put her head down to eat for a couple of days after a shot.
Just a thought, you might give the shots in another spot on her after this.
Eeek! Sorry you and poor Fritzy are having to go through this. I too am OCD about my pets and agree that getting a vet's advice probably is best in most situations. I'm lucky that I have friends who worked with me at the vet clinic and some still do so I can usually get advice from them. :) Don't beat yourself up about it. What's done is done and she'll be fine now. It was just a reminder to follow your gut instincts. :) I hope things calm down for you soon.
That's an amazing amount of goo that came out of Fritzy's bump. I'm glad she is doing better now. Hope she heals quickly.
Wow. That was a lot of drainage. What a relief Fritzy must feel. I hope she heals up quickly and is feeling better soon.
And I hope life slows down for you soon, too. I miss seeing you around.

Glad you got it sorted, and yes absoulutely listen to your instincts girl! They are great!
Glad she is better. I think sometimes it's worth it to get a vet's opinion when it is something you've never dealt with before. For example, MB's abscesses, once I knew the symptoms and how to treat them on my own, there was no need to call out a vet.
I am just glad that Fritz is okay. She's one tough Oreo cookie! :-)
Oh goodness, that's a knarly one. Glad things are better now. You're the busiest girl I know, hands down. Happy Turkey Day!
So glad to hear she is okay, I too would rather call the vet out if I dont know what is going on. The biggest abcess I seen on a horse was on her hip and it was probly 12" by 12", was gross!! She got kicked but it was sooo obvious we had the vet out right away and he lanced it and it was mostly fluid (water and some pus)
Hope life gives you a litle time to enjoy your family at thanksgiving.
Glad the vet was able to drain it and that she's on the road to recovery. Some vaccines are more prone to producing abscesses than others - discuss this with your vet. In particular, there's one rabies vaccine by a particular manufacturer (not naming names but your vet should know) that many vets avoid, and also if possible do the intranasal strep/strangles rather than the injected one.
Oh my goodness, that sounds terrible! I hope Fritzy is feeling some relief; I'm sure she is!
Oh ick! But oh, SO GOOD AND HAPPY! It must really say something about Fritzy's immuine sysrtem and general health for fighting the abscess so well before the vet showed up! And here's the thing about when to call the vet: how to know?? It is so hard! Animals can;t talk--it sometimes all feels so hit or miss. But, in the words of the GREAT BARD : all's well that ends well! Paint Girl, your beautiful Paint is just great! Now have a relxing Thanskgiving with your OH. You deserve some R&R!
It's disgusting and amazing all at the same time! I'm sure she's feeling a whole lot better now.
Kate~ We don't have to do rabies shots here and we do the intranasal strangles. I think from now on my vet will not be giving shots in the neck on Fritzy and stick to the rump. We will definitely be discussing how to go from here on future vaccinations!!
There was an article in one mag recently about a horse that got an abscess from having the intranasal strangles vaccine on the same day as other injected vaccines. Some of the intranasal one managed to enter through the needle puncture, and they had to be uber careful with the drainage.
Wow cousin, I'm so sorry to hear about Fritzy! Yea, that looked like a ton of drainage! I'm sure she feels better after the lancing though. I have certainly learned something MORE i need to watch for....OMG.
I'm sure Desert Rose felt that old familiar "ache" when she saw this.... :-)
You warned me, but did I listen? Noooo. That was some serious grossness, but I bet Fritzy is already feeling a lot better.
Oh geez. That was terrible..That must be a serious surgery. I hope that made her feel better now.
Oh my goodness that's awful..poor Fritz! So sorry you are beating yourself up...I understand your frustration so much. Thank goodness you finally did what you knew was right in your heart and got Fritz help quickly! You are so wonderful to your critters...they are lucky to have you!
I understand COMPLETELY what you are going thru. When Divna injured her leg last year on the fence, I went against my own better judgment and did not call the vet. By the time I did, it was infected and she had a drain similar to the one your horse has. It is best to get the professionals out if there is any question about seriousness. I am feeling really lucky right now too, because after vaccinating Divna a year or so ago, she developed a small bump at the vaccine site. It did finally go down completely (and thankfully did not come back) but it took a LONG time....Glad you got this problem taken care of.
Merry Christmas to you and your readers, I'm just stopping by new blogs that i think are interesting. And then ill put some of those on my favorites list to visit again. Happy holidays folks and wishing everyone a healthy new years as well. Richard from a Amish community in Pennsylvania.
