Do I Have A Future Show Jumper, Eventer?

Continuing my streak of bad luck, my crazy, little 2 yr old Mustang decided to jump an almost 6 foot fence and do a sliding stop on the other side, literally on her side. Now I don't know why these things have to happen to me, and I really don't know why someone is testing my sanity, but I am really running out of patience.

This is what we think happened. We just missed seeing the actual event by a mere second or two. Chance had been hanging out in her shed most the day because, again, it is raining extremely hard (you will see in photos how bad it is here). My arena is behind Chance's pasture, and the deer have been hanging out there for awhile. Now I don't know if this is what happened, but this is what we are pretty sure did happen. Chance became spooked by the deer, which in turn caused her to run out of her shed and as she was running toward the fence, she decided at the last minute that she could not stop in time, so she decided to just go over the top. Once on the other side of the fence, due to excessive slipperiness and mud, she fell over on her left side and slid quite a distance. We caught the action right after she got up and ran down to Brandy and Fritzy. My OH just happened to look out the window and then screamed "OMG, Chance is in the other pasture!" My first thought was she ran through the fence, and I looked through the binoculars to see what I was dealing with before I ran out there. The fence was standing, but the strand of electric wire on top the fencing was down.

View of Chance's pasture looking into Brandy and Fritzy's pasture. This is exactly where she jumped, she had to jump over the trench of water, over the fence and land on other side.

I immediately grabbed my coat, a halter and I ran outside. The horses were running and bucking all over the place. I knew we had a serious problem. Not only had Fritzy and Chance never been in a pasture together, but with everything that just happened, I knew I was going to have a problem catching her. It had rained so hard in the last 24 hours, that it was so slippery and dangerous for this kind of commotion to be happening in the pasture. If Chance wasn't already hurt, she would be by the time I was able to get her caught.

Chance back on her side. This kind of gives you an idea of how high the fence is from the side she had jumped over.

All 3 horses were running, bucking and sliding all over. Kicking wars started between all 3 horses. I'm in a panic. The damn goats had to come out and get involved. Edgar is lucky he still has a head. I was tempted to get my TCP .380 out and just end it with the goat right there. (At this point, I had never been more angry at any animal in my entire life). Because at this moment I still did not know if my baby was injured, and the whole situation was just plain out of control. I then thought that we could somehow get Chance through the gate into the long paddock without haltering her, but once the gate was opened all the horses wanted to go through. We just let Fritzy and Edgar into the long paddock and left Brandy and Chance in the pasture so we could try and get her to calm down. Chance was just dripping in mud from head to tail on her left side. I couldn't see any injuries, but it was hard to tell with all the mud.

This is where Chance landed. So where you see Chance now, she jumped that fence from that side, and landed at the flattened mud that's at the bottom of this picture. She could have landed on her feet then fell on her side, but we will never know. All I know is her whole left side was covered in mud so she did fall at some point.

For what seemed an eternity and after trying to trick Chance with grass, and her getting in trouble for not letting me catch her, I finally got her calmed down enough to get a halter on her. I looked at her as best as I could through all the mud to make sure she didn't have any cuts. I couldn't see anything and could not hose her off due to her not having had hosing lessons yet and didn't want to traumatize her anymore then she was already traumatized.

Chance's face, about 45 minutes after her ordeal, still drenched in mud.

I led her into the long paddock and waited for my OH to get the gate open so I could get her back into her own pasture.

Chance's side. She looks just wet, but it is actually all mud.

This could have turned out so much worse. Chance could have ran through the fence, which would have caused multiple injuries, so thankfully she decided the attempt at jumping it. But by doing that she could have broken a leg, her neck, or something. I don't know if she has an injury that I can't see, like a tendon or ligament. But am hoping that for once something will go my way. She has never tried jumping the fence before, so I know it was a last minute decision in the heat of a scary moment.

This shows you how much water we have on our property right now. We have never seen anything like this in the 11 yrs that we have lived here. This is literally a river that has been flowing through the pastures, for months.

We had a couple days of decent weather, sun and around 65 degrees, but it does not last for more then 1 or 2 days. We need at least 2 weeks of dry, warm weather to dry this place out. It started raining hard last night, and it has not stopped. I am so lucky I don't have more serious injuries to my horses due to the mud.

We can't put horses in the pasture above anymore. That's Brandy and Fritzy's old pasture and it is literally a foot deep of mud, if not more. It is bad, so bad. The entire pasture is like that.

I am out of patience. I do not know how much more of this I can take. I am at my wit's end, literally. I have never seen anything like it. This is May 15th! The pasture's are usually dried up, the stream is usually flowing at a trickle and the pond is halfway to being drained this time of year!

At least the horses aren't up to their knees in mud like in the other pasture. But you can see how much it has rained because it is now flowing into their one dry spot, their shed!

This is the new Painted Creek. We have had a constant flow of water through the pasture's, down the gravel road and into the pond. It does not stop flowing. It is probably about 6 inches deep.

I am hoping that Chance did not get any injuries, it is hard to tell. I think she is okay. It could have been a lot worse, so much worse. Just thinking about what happened, and what could have easily been another huge vet bill, or worse. We are also very lucky (the only luck to this whole day) that this happened on our day off and we caught it when we did. It probably is even a good thing she jumped into Brandy and Fritzy's pasture, and not outside of it to where she could run wherever she wanted! I hope Chance has learned her lesson and does not jump anymore fences! I ride western, for gosh sake! Doesn't she know that?!?

My place looks pretty much like yours. I am so with you on running out of patience.

Hopefully, Chance has the fence jumping out of her system. Dare jummped a fence once when she felt cornered and has never tried again. Maybe you'll get lucky and that will be the case with Chance.

Bless your heart! So glad she didn't injure herself clearing that fence and landing in that slippery mud.

Very scary! Glad that she seems uninjured. That's sure a lot of mud - you've just cured me of complaining about our awful weather (wind chills in the 20s with the howling winds we've had for days).

wow! I sure hope she's ok.

It looks just like that here in Southern Ohio too... and it's raining again. *sigh*

Okay, I definitely will not complain about the weather in Minnesota. We've had rain and high rivers but not mud like that. I don't anything that can get to people like the crazy weather people have had this year. It's nuts! I hope Chance is okay and that things improve your way.

OMG!! That is a soupy mess! you poor girl! So busy and on your day off, this! Glad Chance seems to have come out of it OK so far,and I am hoping for an all rounfd OK. We have had 80KMPH winds for the last 4 days ,I wish I could send you some to help dry things up.Ma Nature needs to cut us all some slack this year!

Apparently, this has been a bad spring all over the country, but that's a god awful amount of water you're dealing with which could lead to other issues you don't need right now. It's horrible here, too, but nothing like that.

I sure hope Chance is ok. I can't imagine trying to move all the animals around in that. That must have been some chaotic mess!
Take care, and pray for sun!

Oh yea gads, your fields look like mine did.. now that my mares are moved, the mud is not getting stirred into soup as it was when they were here.

My old pony just stays in his stall, rarely venturing out of the stall.

We are so sick of this continuing rain in Western Washington!

I hope that Chances tough mustang blood gets her through this without injuries!

Oh girl...it's those youngsters. I swear. Over the years we have had multiple youngsters go over impossible looking fences.

I'm glad Chance looks okay and she probably is. At least the muddy ground is soft and that likely protected her when she fell.

Speaking of...Wow! Chance doesn't look like a baby anymore. What a pretty young lady.

Sheesh! I hear ya. We just dried up and now it went back to pouring! Doesn't nature know I have young horses to train!?

Horses do the most amazing things that you can never even imagine. I'm glad she didn't get hurt. Boy you're not kidding about your place being waterlogged. A river run thru it! lol. And you live up there why again? When you could live down here....

I'm SO glad everything ended up okay as far as you know. The life of horses is crazy, anything can go wrong at any given time. It's a gameble, but worth it or we wouldn't put ourselves through it. Looks like we might get some sunshine later this week, yahoo! But we aren't done with the rain this year, I don't think.
Hang in there!

Oh my goodness that is CRAZY!!!! I can't believe Chance jumped that fence!!! Wow!! Thank goodness she is okay!!! I can totally imagine your panic-I felt it just reading abot their interactions! Yikes!!

And oh MY! That rain looks horrific! I would so much rather deal with snow than rain. I felt anxiety just looking at all of that mud! I don't know how you deal with it! Poor Chloe would not be able to live with so much wetness-the snow is already a challenge but that much constant rain would probably push her over the edge.

Tell Chance to stop trying to get into the Guinness Book of Worl Records for how high a mustang can jump ;) btw-she looks so beautiful! I wonder if Chance and Snapdragon would be BFFs? :)

Big hug your way and hope everything is nice and calm for a change-you certainly deserve it!!!

your property is gorgeous, all those cedars, you just have to keep looking up: )

i have to show this post to my husband because sometimes he complains that the horse makes muddy spots.

i am glad chance is ok after that jump and fall. i am not brave enough to own a baby!

we've finally got some rain here, what you and i could call drizzle. but drizzle all day long is exactly what we needed so badly. i keep looking up saying "keep coming, keep coming" because the trees and crops are desperate by now.

That is a ridiculous amount of mud. It would make me crazy too. You guys must be sick of having to take off and put on your shoes all the time. I'm wondering if you can tie plastic bags along the fence line to deter her from jumping for a while and at the same time desensitize her. I'm sure her fall and slide may have been enough to make her think twice, though.

Glad Chance if doing okay after her adventure and that you also survived. MUD and Rain... Getting OLD!!! WE are also having lots of rain. Think we are starting to mold or rust...

Those Mustangs are incredibly athletic. I talked to a trainer recently who is training a Mustang in preparation for the Extreme Mustang Makeover challenge being held in Ft. Collins, CO this June. She said one of the requirements is that the Mustangs be kept in an enclosure with 6 foot fencing. Now I know why. Amazing, because most of the Mustangs I've seen are on the short side. I guess they can really soar when they are motivated. I hope Chance came through this with no injuries. And I hope you get some relief from this rain soon. That is a lot of mud and standing water!

Holy mud! But seriously jumping is fun-you should give another kind of riding a try! You've obviously got the horse for it!

cdncowgirl said...

Wow you are right that could have been much much worse...

What's the deal with all the weird weather? Its been much more extreme almost everywhere, either wetter, drier, windier. Just weird. Almost makes me believe in all the '2012' stuff ;)

Holy Mud!

I've never seen so much or wetness since we've lived in New Mexico, and I hope I never do. I would be in a deep depression if I had to deal with that soggy, nasty mess. And the poor horses, always pastern deep in water and mud. That can't be good either.

Seriously, my friend, you need to move down to New Mexico or Arizona. You need some dry air and ground, bright blue skies, sunshine, and beautiful days to get out and ride and play with your horses.

I'm so glad that Chance is ok and didn't cause any serious damage to property or herself. Maybe she was trying to escape the mud in her own paddock.....instead of the grass is always greener...Maybe in your case, it should be The Paddock is always dryer on the other side.

word verif: physh

You're place is going to be underwater soon and then you'll have plenty of physh to swim around.

Oh man....she never ceases to amaze, does she?! I'm so glad everything is ok. That mud is crazy. We are bone dry here, haven't had any rain for weeks. I'm waiting for the fires to start soon...

Oh man, ponies can be such worrisome PITA's sometimes! So glad she's okay! I'm SO WITH YOU on the F&$%ing rain! UGH!!! We live on a hill and our property has always drained fine and with the gravel paddocks we've never had problems, but they are getting muddy with this ridiculous amount of rain we've had. The bottom of our neighborhood flooded last weekend. It's just insane. I want some dry weather dammit! At least this week is supposed to be alright! :) And my my! What a pretty grown up looking horse that Chance has become! She looks great! Under the mud of course. ;)

juliette said...

Poor little Chance. She must have been very scared to jump that high!!! I am so glad she is ok.

lytha said...

ok i showed my husband all of the photos on this post and his eyes got really big. he is not a northwesterner so he had no idea how bad it can get with unending rain.

i feel for you guys and wish so badly we could trade for a few weeks. every drop that falls is precious here at the moment.

my horse's hooves/frogs look like a nevada horse's hooves/frogs. they sound alomst like he's shod when he walks on pavement, and i have to spray them with a hose for 20 minutes to be able to trim them.

i guess that's one thing - your trimmer doesn't have to break tools on your girls!

Andrea said...

Oh my goodness!! Maybe she thought it was less muddy on the other side!!

And I wish we could have some of that rain down here. We are so dry here in the swamp we are actually having to water our lawns!!! That is not normal at all!! The swamps, bayous, and ponds are so low it's crazy! We would gladly take a week of rain!!

baystatebrumby said...

Wow, maybe you do have an eventeron your hands! But how scary is that? I can just imagine the chaos and the wild commotion. That is when you really see the prey part of a horse come out, when she is really scared. Thank goodness everyone is OK. And I feel for you and all the rain. Our spring has been nothing but rain. Plus, here it is May 19 and we are still making fires in our wood stove. All it does is rain and it won't warm up. Not exactly stellar weather for horses, their pastures or riding. Good grief.

Wow what a jump Chance took over that fence! Hope she is ok. I had to deal with mud like that at my place about a year ago. But this year in we haven't had any rain for about 2 months. Drought seems to be just as bad as mud at times because instead of green our pastures are brown or bare or both!

Reddunappy said...

Oh geez Paint girl! naughty baby!!! I hope Chance recovers ok from her jumping trick!!! OH the mud is finally drying up around here!!! The pasture is still really wet, but around the barn is firming up and starting to dry out, finally!!!
All our Arizona, New Mexico friends just dont understand LOL its beautifull and dry down there! But they have SNAKES and GIANT SPIDERS!!! LOL LOL LOL um mud or snakes, mud or snakes, um I will take the mud!!! LOL LOL Although I did see a RAT!!! when I went out to feed tonight!! LOL I put out bait, it should be gone soon!!! LOL LOL

Wow, That is just crazy! I hate rain and mud, ours has dried up for now, sounds like you're getting slammed!

Achieve1dream said...

Wow all of that rain and mud sucks! However I think I'd be thanking my lucky stars because that mud probably cushioned Chance's fall. Imagine if she'd fallen on rock hard ground. Ouch! I'm so glad she's okay.

I hear ya about the water and mud. Our place is the same, disgusting combination of mud, water and grass TRYing to grow. Yuck, so ready for summer...
