First, I'd like to thank each and every one of you for leaving your comments on my OH's food dislikes! We laughed so hard while reading them, and it is also great to know more about all of your food likes and dislikes! I know we all have our favorites and least favorites, and it sure is interesting to see what they are! One of these days I will have to share what some of mine are. For now I am going to just fill you all in on what has been going on around these parts.
I came down with a head cold a week ago, and on New Years Eve it went into my chest. So I didn't do anything for New Years. Actually, my OH went to bed around 9:00 and I just cuddled on the couch with Bailey and Dakota, and watched t.v. Fun, huh? Since I was off on New Years day, and I also opted to take Saturday off, which gave me a 4 day weekend, probably the last 4 days off in a row until next year, I was hoping to get some quality Chance time in. But that wasn't in the cards for me. This chest cold had me down all weekend, so I spent most of my days on the couch. I did happen to get our Christmas tree taken down, but really, that is about it. I feel so bad, I really wanted to get some Chance time! Plus the weather was perfect, no rain, or freezing temps, it was cloudy but around the low 40's, perfect! But on Christmas weekend I did get to do some training with Chance, so I will just use the pictures from then. My parents were up for Christmas, so the day after Christmas, I brought out Chance to show my family. This was the first time my parents were going to see Chance in person and I was really excited. I took her up to the arena, and she did so well. But on the way back to her pasture, she had to act up, she wanted to trot off and not listen to me. Then when I try to get her to mind, she overreacts by rearing, so we had to have a leading lesson.
She kept trying to rush past me and the gate, so I would turn her around and walk her back the other way, we would do this until she calmed down and walked calmly.
She would get frustrated and rear up. It didn't help any that the ground was frozen solid, covered in frost, and very slippery! I thought I was going to end up on my butt!
When I tried to correct her behavior, she would just throw her head around and rear, I had my OH get my dressage whip out. I have had enough of the rearing. She is going to learn that rearing is NOT okay. She is getting much bigger and stronger, so I need to get this under control, NOW!
Of course the minute she does what she is supposed to do, she gets lots of praise. We would continue walking, once she started trotting or not listening, we would turn back around and start over. My goal was to get her to walk calmly to the gate and to not overreact with rearing.
Chance is such a smart little whippersnapper, that she was walking calmly pretty quickly. This is when I put her away. Although 2 days later, I brought her out to work on the same thing, she again overreacted by rearing, she got the whip on her front legs, before you know it, she was done rearing and walking pretty nicely. This is what I was hoping to work on this weekend, until I got sick. So my next goal with Chance is to get her leading in "other" places, she needs to get out and explore the world more! But I have to make sure I can control her, and that she gets over the rearing.
My sister made us family members some Christmas presents. She is so creative, and I just love it when she makes us things! This is a sign that I can hang somewhere in my house. I love the phrase, because I believe that we all should take a chance at something, doesn't matter what it may be. I just chose to take a chance at adopting a Mustang!

My sister also framed a picture of me and Chance, when she gave me her first kiss! I have always loved this picture, and was so excited that she did this for me!

I also received 4 calendars for Christmas, 3 from my OH. There is a funny story about the calendars. He bought me 2 for Christmas, but while we were out shopping at the pet store, I found an Australian Shepherd calendar that I just had to have. So I bought it. But my OH had already bought 2 for me, so I told him that he could pick one of the ones that he bought me and we would give it to my mom. Well, as I was wrapping my own presents (my OH already had them in boxes and sealed with duck tape, so I couldn't peek, he says), he had the one calendar out that we were going to give to my mom, and I loved it! So I told him I wanted it and we could get another one for my mom, and the place just happened to have one left of the one I really liked, so my mom got the same calendar. Oh, and that Australian Shepherd calendar that I bought? Yep, he put it in a box and had me wrap it! I was wondering where that calendar went!

Other than that, I have been staying toasty warm, with a fire in the wood stove.

We have been letting the crazy Aussie's come in to hang out. Unfortunately, Sadie had a relapse, and went after Bailey. She really wanted a chew toy he had, and started stalking him. I could tell by the look in her eye that she might try something, so I was trying to keep her mind off of Bailey. But she ended up attacking him. My OH was able to break it up and put Sadie back in the garage for her time out. I was very disappointed. She had been so good for 7 months! But I will not let this setback get me down. We will persevere. I know in my heart and soul that she can live with Bailey. She is over the garage issue and me coming home issue, so I know she can overcome the being in the house issue. That seems to be the last problem we have. One step at a time.......

She looks so sad outside, and it breaks my heart.

And look who is a big girl now!!

Do you see what I see? Yep, Chance has finally become a halter-less Mustang!! Yippee!! It was kind of funny, because the first day I had to go catch her was the day my parents were here, and she did so well. She moved her nose around a bit, but she allowed me to put the halter on and buckle it. I am sure one of these days she might not let me catch her, but I am just so happy to see that face without a halter!

And it is a cute face, isn't it?

OOooh, Naughty, sassy little filly! Lot's to learn, it's only the beginning, she'll get it!
Your little Chance is really turning into a big girl! She has really grown, what a stinker too! The rearing, I hope she will out grow it like Gilly did. He would rear and strike out when he didn't get his way sometimes. He doesn't do that anymore, thank goodness!
Hope you get better soon! (knock on wood) I haven't had a cold in years! Now having said that I probably will get one! LOL
Can't wait to see Chance when she sheds off her winter hair. Be sure and take LOTS of pictures of her!
Oh, the sign and picture Pony Girl did for you are beautiful!!! You have such a talented sister! :-)
Jane and Gilly
Glad you're working with Chance on the rearing - better to nip it in the bud now - but I think it's a pretty common stage for foals to go through when they don't get their way. I've never had a baby horse, and I'll bet they can be uppity at times - just like small children, really. Love the pictures, and glad your family got to see her!
Evil little filly. Most foals will go through a rearing stage if they haven't learned to tie when they were young. I tie all youngsters I work with when they are under a few weeks old. I have an old tire tube tied with baling twine to a solid object. Never had a problem with a horse pulling back or rearing leading after that. Once I did have a mare that I was driving wanting to rear up when she got frustrated. I did the same thing, whip to the front legs. She promptly decided it was NOT a very good idea as it stung.
You are doing so well with Chance ,I was quite pleased to note your body language in the rearing photos is super calm and steady! way to go!
Too bad you got sick , but better that you took the time to rest. The sign your sister made made me smile as I have a horse at my place (sold to a friend ) that I named TKA Chance
She looks so cute with her winter coat! I love when they get all fuzzy like that. Mine are pretty fuzzy right now too, but nothing like that! She has a beautiful eye, and a great expression in that last picture. Good luck with her. Sounds like she's a handful, but I usually like the stinkers the best afterall! Its good to know they have some spunk!
Paint Girl--I have the same experience as Sydney--the more they tie, the less they rear. You know how Beautiful likes to rear up, and another Mustang I adopted at 3 years old did, too. I'm happy to report that the 3 year old did not rear under saddle. Yay. Beautiful used to pull back and go up as a way of trying to get out of leading, but the tying REALLY helped. Of course, I didn't tie her solid, but she thought she was, and there was no give in the lead or she would have been bright enough to figure that out and pull harder. I did a half wrap around a railroad tie and held the other end. You're right to get on her now, she seems kind of big next to you!! Good luck!! :)
Sorry you were sick, and at the time you could of used the time off!
Chance looks so fuzzy..mine do too! Good to get her in line now, I swear yearlings are the " terrible twos" of the horse kingdom!
What a good momma you are! That rearing habit will be broken in no time (i bet she was a little shocked the first time that whip touched her!) Personally I'll do anything to avoid hitting my horses unless it is over an issue like rearing.. then it's do or die time:) Keep up the good work! She looks great with that big fat hip! (I wish it was a good thing to say about myself lol).
Your sister is so talented! What an awesome sign!
So sorry to hear that Sadie had a setback but the fact she has gotten so much better is a testiment to what a great mom (and dad) you've been to her. Not many people would have stuck with her.
Happy new Year!!
Sydney and Linda~ I have been tying Chance for a little over a month now. When she is tied and she spooks, she does rear back, but does release to the pressure. I always first tie her and groom her before I work on anything else. I have figured out that she is rearing to be naughty, and when she is frustrated. I am sure she will get over it and that it is just a "baby" phase! I sure hope so anyways!! If only I could get some decent weather, and get healthy, I am sure she would get over it quickly! She is SO smart!
I think Sadie has lost her baby face! On your sidebar there is a picture of her as a foal w/her dam...wow, does she look more grown up! Her color has really darkened, too. She is really getting big! Can't wait to take her out on more walks around the yard. I think she's a quick learner and will continue to pick things up. All of these experiences are new, and she just has to learn. All horses have been there.
Glad you liked the sign and photo, I liked making it! :) I want to make one for me now, too! :)
OOPS- I mean Chance, not Sadie, has lost her baby face! :)
p.s. I did think Chance did really well in the house with our little cousin and everyone opening presents...
Pony Girl~ You have me so confused, did I let Chance in the house for Christmas? I thought horses weren't allowed in the house? Silly sis! I let Sadie in the house!
Goodheavens! Never a dull moment at the Painted Creek! I missed the little naughty episode, since I was playing Grammy and had to take Cocoa Puff in to get warm. She is getting so big. I live her face too. It will be fun to see how she is a year from now. Hugs to you sweetie. I LUV you!
best wishes for 2010!
You are doing a great job. Hope you are feeling better.
Ooh, Chance, you're cruisin' for a bruisin' as my mama used to say! ;) He, he...just kiddin'. Good job Paint Girl, nipping that behavior in the bud while she's still a youngin'. Love the gifts from PG...so meaningful!
P.S. I had the "Wild Horses" calendar for 2009...is it just me or do most of them look like a herd of A-RABS?!? Funny, huh? Although, I guess it depends how you define "wild". I'll admit, my boy can be a bit wild at times! ;)
Chance is getting so big! She's gorgeous! I think the rearing is a phase she's going through and that you're handling it properly, gently, but firmly, telling her that it is NOT okay behavior. I'm sure she will outgrow it.
I love your "kiss" picture. Aren't fillies so sweet? I'm having so much fun with Yalla!
You're doing all the right things--she'll come around quick. B. is older than her and she still acts up half wanting to play. You look very calm in the pics. :)
She is a very pretty filly and quite photogenic and I LOVE the gifts from Pony Girl.
Love the gifts from Pony Girl! I think I need to send my sisters here and show them what "good" sisters do for each other. Lots going on with the critters. Good thing you have lots of patience and stick-to-itness.
Too bad about Sadie's setback... although like you said she has made huge progress in the other areas.
I love the pics of you with Chance, you look so calm and in control. Some people let their tempers/frustration/fear get the better of them in those situations.
Sorry about your cold...sometimes they are worse than the flu!
You will get Chance through this and every new issue that comes up...I believe in you!
That is funny, so here is my excuse- it was EARLY in the moment when I posted my comments! I guess I was a little confused. You have TOO many animals to keep track of, silly!! :)
Awwww! Yes she is! And even cuter and more pretty without the halter on. I can only imagine how grown up and beautiful she'll be when her winter/baby fur falls out. It's so hard to judge the beauty of a horse when they look like a yak. lol!
My mare, usually so shiny and gleaming in the summer grows the longest beard in the winter. She looks more like a goat! lol!
I grinned when I saw the expression on your face when Chance went all crazy on the lead beside you. You seem to calm, yet sort of like 'oh dear...not again."
Silly filly is just acting like a toddler at the store being told no they can't have their way. She's just having a temper tantrum. Good on you for correcting her fairly and firmly. She's a good girl and will get it right as she grows more mature.
Poor Sadie. All she has to do is just get along. Maybe she gets cabin fever and becomes more possesive when she's inside the house or in confined spaces?
I hope she move past it once and for all.
Your fire looks cozy. I'm sorry you've been sick, though. Feel better soon, my friend!
~Lisa
PG~ I am SO proud of your patience in making sure Chance learns the right way!! So many people try to cut corners and it isn't fair to the horse or the people around it!! Great job!! She looks great, so pretty with her halter off!! I am so glad your parents got to meet her!!
Poor Sadie! I think you are right it was just a minor set back and she will get over this!!
So exciting to see Chance learning the ropes. She's one lucky filly to be in your capable hands.
It's funny what will set off dogs with each other, hopefully you can use the same calm assertiveness to get her back on the right path... :)
I am so the same way with calendars! I always have to have an Aussie one, but the last 2 years I haven't been able to find one (guess I should try online). So its been horse calendars =)
Hope you are feeling better, guess we both had a pretty boring New Years. Chance is so lucky to have you working with her, & she is so cute! Poor Sadie, I hope you can work through this issue and it will be the last.
Hope you are having a good week!
I love the photo and sign you got for Christmas! I'd be asking for photos from your sister for every gift giving event - she's amazing! That's a really cool frame too. Well, sorry to hear you got sick on your break. Hope you're feeling a bit better now and back on your feet!
all your photos are SO fun to see! That naughty little mustang! Don't worry about her--she will learn just fine. I love that kiss picture PG took of you and Chance. It is so precious. You are surrounded by people who love horses too! And dogs! And woodstoves! I like how Chance is all wooly.
Great post. Just a note of encouragement: We started two geldings within the last few years, and both did the same little high-ho-silver show for me a couple of times. (thinking back though, I'm pretty positive my face did NOT have the same look yours did) ;) Anyway, neither of them has ever reared under saddle, and I think it was because we nipped it immediately.
Keep up the good work!
Yes Chance is really cute and no you have to get her over the rearing up. i think you will prevail with her, just sorry you got sick! Sadie is so beautiful it is just a shame you never know when she is going to have a bad day and have PMS.
Glad to provide you with food humor along with the others.
Get well and rest up.
Chance is SO grown up....I cannot believe how much she's grown. I loved the second pic of you....you look so relaxed! LOL! I do agree somewhat with the rearing bit. You do have to get a handle on it now and doing the right correction. Rearing is usually a tying or respect issue. She just may require extra work on that. Round pen lessons will help with her listening and respecting you better too. I'm sure you are doing all of that or you wouldn't be leading her at all! (Didn't get a chance to read all your comments/replies) Neither of our foals reared with us but we tied at a very young age and they learn to respect give to pressure....same as Sydney's getup with the tire but we have a rounded hook to attach it safely. We actually jump up and down and bolt toward them to spook with all kinds of things like opening an umbrella, ball bouncing and horns etc. (we look pretty ridiculous doing it) so they WILL pull back and learn. Some horse will NOT grow out of it so that theory doesn't apply in generalities. You're doing a great job with her with limited time...just keep with her and she's going to look to you for direction and confidence!
definitely some serious adventures you're having... good on ya.. for staying with chance... i know sometimes i need to be more "assertive" and git 'r done
happy new year
gp
Yes. it is definitely a cute face!
