Once I finished brushing her, I pulled out my towel that I had used a couple months ago for sacking out. I wanted to wave it around and see how she reacted while she was tied. I have waved the towel around her before, but that was before I started tying her. The minute I started waving it, and it made that flapping noise, Chance reared back in a panic, but as always she gave in to the pressure and went forward. I kept doing this until I got the proper response from her. Then I would start over. She would get a little jumpy but by the time I ended the towel flapping she was standing stock still without a care in the world. I then walked up to her and put the towel on her back, which she got a little jumpy about. But immediately calmed down. I think she remembered those days a couple months ago when I rubbed the towel all over her and put it on her back. I just need to be more consistent about doing this.
I untied her and worked on backing. She backs like a pro now. She's so responsive! I pulled out my handy stick and flung the string all over her body, let it wrap around all her legs, under her belly, around her neck, and she doesn't even flinch! She has always stood completely still when I do this. Nothing has really bothered her around her legs, probably from all the handy stick work I did when I first got her home.
I called my OH at the house, and told him I was ready for his assistance. We were going to work on leading through the middle paddock, where she always gets upset and starts to rear. I wanted to see if she remembered anything from the last time. My OH came out and shut the lower gate, in case she somehow out muscled me and got away, then he opened Chance's gate and off we went. We had to navigate some mud puddles. She didn't overreact like she has before about the water. She stopped to sniff and seemed curious.

She wanted to walk right behind me, but I made her stay to my right. She hopped over the mud puddles, which is better then the last time. After we made it past the water, she started to get worked up, when I say worked up I mean she starts to trot, head up high and she ignores my jerk on the lead. This is when she typically would start to rear. I walked her down the paddock and back up, then back down. At this point she got worked up and reared. I took my dressage whip and whacked her good on her front legs. She went backwards, hopped up again and I went to whip her legs again, but missed. She was still going backwards and I wasn't quick enough. BUT, she never reared with me again. We continued walking through the paddock until she was calm and responsive. She did actually calm down quickly, and if she started to trot and not mind, I'd jerk her lead, and she would come back down to the walk without rearing. I think she is starting to understand what that jerk means.

My OH was in charge of the camera here, and he doesn't let it focus before he snaps the picture. So blurry pictures again!

I decided to take her up to the arena to see if she wanted to run around a bit. I have only had her in the arena twice, and she never wanted to run. There is some grass in the corners of my arena and she is just content to eat it. But today, since the arena wasn't slippery or muddy, I told my OH that I wanted to make her run. It is too muddy in her pasture, so she doesn't run around much.

Before I turned her loose, I had my OH pick up all 4 feet. I want her to get used to someone else doing this, and especially a man. My farrier is a man, and he will be here in a couple weeks. Chance did very well for my OH. I also think my OH enjoyed this! I know he loves watching me work with her, but I can't get him out of the house on football Sundays!!
Once my OH was done with her feet, I walked her around a bit, then turned her loose. She went straight to the grass and started eating. I asked my OH to rattle the arena panels, they rattled, and oh. my. goodness!! She took off running, bucking, rearing, spinning, the whole nine yards! Of course my other horses took off at a full run through the mud, which I hate. I always think they are going to hurt themselves! Brandy was rearing and bucking in place. It actually looked like Brandy and Fritzy were sparring with each other! If anything, those two looked like wild Mustangs! Chance saw all that and was going crazy!
I took a ton of pictures, but they are all blurry, so I am only able to post a couple that weren't too terrible.

My little Mustang can move!!

She'd stop by the gate and watch my other horses going crazy, then she would take off running and bucking again.

The only thing that I didn't like, was when she started to run again, she would run straight at me. I didn't have my longe whip with me, only my dressage whip. So I would have to go at her with that. I do not want her thinking she can run me down. It wasn't that she accidentally ran in my direction, she kept doing it, and making it a point to run at me, then kick out. Maybe she thought I was another baby and she wanted to play with me. I know that some of our babies at the farm will do this. I wanted to take video of her going crazy, but I was too concerned about where she was and making sure I didn't get run over.
I like this picture, but you will see that I cut off her ears, I know, I have such great camera skills! I think she was about to turn around, and I did not want to get run over.

By the time all the running was done, Chance was huffin' and puffin' and totally sweaty!

It did take me about 10 minutes to catch her in the arena. She did not want to be caught. But she didn't run from me. She just walked away to eat some grass, then when I would walk up to her, she'd turn around and walk away, she did this many times. I was finally able to get her in the corner with my OH's assistance, and grab her halter. On our way back to her pasture, she started to trot and I jerked on the lead, and she went right back to the walk. She tried it again, jerked on the lead, and back to the walk. I think she is totally understanding that now. She didn't overreact and rear like she did a couple weeks ago. I didn't even have to turn her around. She walked nice and calmly into her pasture.
I was very happy with how things went. She responded just like I hoped she would. My only wish is that my arena pictures didn't turn out so blurry and that I was able to take a video of her being silly! I'll try to remember to take a video next time, and I will stand on the other side of the fence!
I was going through some pictures last night, and seeing the pictures when Chance was 4, 5 and 6 months old just really showed me how much she has grown up! She isn't so baby-ish anymore and she is going through a growth spurt right now. She is getting tall. She has almost grown out of her baby halter, one more hole to go, then she'll be in her new one. This experience has been so much fun for me. Just watching her grow, learn and change in the 3 months I've had her, has been so exciting! I can't wait to see what the future holds for us!

She is really turning into a horse. Just look at that butt! Kudos for you, for all your patience, persistence and quietness. You'll make quite a nice little horse out of her.
Chance is growing up to be a really pretty girl, and you are doing good work with her. Get feeling better!
Well done
I'm enjoying watching her grow and seeing her progress. Sometimes when my horses want to play with me by kicking out to the side, I'll throw the rope out at their hind legs right when they kick, so it's like a snake biting them. I doubt they'd purposefully kick me, but I don't want them to think it's okay to play that way with humans. It's fun to watch them when they get the fitz. I'm glad you are feeling better.
Good progress and fun pictures - thanks!
She's a cute filly. She's turning out great.
Bummer I missed all of your baby's playful antics, would have loved to see her run!! I just can't believe how big she is getting. I don't know how tall she will be, but I think she will be a tank, for sure!! Curious to hear how today went. I know it was raining so I'm not sure if you got out with her again.
Your little Chance seems to be taking lots of chances!!
We definitely need video. I'm just dying to see her moving!
Okay, I totally have no clue about these things, but is her running to you in any way her looking for direction? Like you're mama, or head mare? Or is it always a bossy behavior?
So fun to see her - she's so big already!
She's looking really good! I always love seeing pictures of her. I like the photo of the two of you. Her coloring is a lot like Yalla!, even to the star on the forehead but she looks larger. When was she born and how big is her Mama?
I'm glad she seems to be getting over the rearing. It sounds like you have made lots and lots of progress with her already.
Looks like another good session with your baby! She definitely is growing up! I know exactly what you're talking about with blurry pics when the OH has the camera...but I guess beggars can't be choosers, huh? ;)
What a cutie.
I know working with this one gelding that was super people friendly early on he had no fear and would challenge you by running at you to see if you would move out of his space. If you did he won. If you won he would kick out for the first wile.
She is such a cutie pie! She looks big next to you. A video is a great idea!!!
Chance is really looking good! She's getting big. I think horses want to play with us in the turnout, not knowing they could kill us!
Thanks for taking us all on your journey with Chance!
Breathe~ I have thought of her running at me could be a sign of me being the mama thing. It isn't that she is running at me to hurt me, but she is running at me on purpose. So there is a reason for it, just not sure why!
Fantastyk Voyager~ Chance will be a year old on April 9th. I can't believe it's right around the corner!! Her mom was around 14.3hh. Brandy is 14.3 and I am hoping that Chance gets a little taller then that so maybe my OH can ride her too, someday, if I feel like sharing!! I also think that Yalla! looks so much like Chance!! It's almost like they could be twins, except Yalla! has the beautiful Arab face!
Oh she did GREAT!! It is so awesome that she's so stinkin smart!! You are doing great with her!!
Some of my favorite times to watch my horses is when they get to running and playing!! I too love taking pictures of it! And yes we have had a few crash and burns, but luckily no injuries from that...yet..
Good for you! patience and repetitiveness are the name of the game. She is really filling out..can't wait to see how she slicks out in the summer.
She seems like a very confident, smart horse--and she really does seem BIG by the pictures.
I admire anyone with the patience and dedication to train a baby. I've been tempted a few times to get a youngster but know that I just don't have the time or possibly the skills to actually train one right.
She is so cute! I tell you she is a lot better looking than most mustangs and she is going to be a good little filly! Good luck with that little darlin"
She is getting so big. You are doing a great job with her! What a grand horse you will have in the end!
They grow up so quicklY! It's great that she is retaining her lessons so much, even when you haven't been able to work with her as much as you'd like. She must be a dream. Sometimes her photos remind me of Tiny when she was a baby!
She looks terrific and it sure sounds like she's coming along well. Kudos!
W.O.W! That second photo up from the bottom shows off ust how much Chance has matured. She's not a baby anymore. I can see how gorgeous she will become when she is all grown up, too. She has such a beautiful shoulder, neck, and already a nicely developing butt. lol!
And what a smart girl she is, too. I love updates about Chance. I'm glad you were able to get out and spend some fun time with her. Your training is doing wonders for her.
~Lisa
What a goof, she certainly likes kicking up her heels!
Sounds like she is coming along! My filly would rear like that. It was her way of saying, "NO WAY!" and to make you feel better my filly would flip over backwards. And she would do it A LOT!! I thought for sure she would never stop flipping over! But with time and a lot of work she got better. She doesn't do it any more. I am not sure what I did to get her to stop. I think she just realized I was going to hurt her. And we butt roped her to get her to walk.
But Chance is getting big! She looks great! I love her wavy tail!!
she is so cute with her round belly! i am glad she is coming along fine. sorry you have been so sick!! don't feel bad...my husband stays on the couch watching sports all the time!!
Boy, she sure is growing fast! Training is such a trial, isn't it? Keep up the good work!
She is so adorable and growing right fast ! I always felt training was such a good way to bond with my horse, and building good groundwork under her made it all so much easier as she got larger.
You're doing great, Paint! We had a little rearing girl years ago and that's exactly how we handled it. A couple of whacks later and no more rearing.
Look at that shoulder on your girl! Do I see a future cutting star there? You're going to need to get her started on the bull next year!
You are both a great team. Wonderful photos.
Nothing like a great mustang.

Paint Girl how fun! Our good ole OH's never can take pics like us I guess but they try hard! Looks like Chance is trusting you. Romeo gets ornery and will run up to me but I "nip it" immediately (by lunging back at him (at a safe distance) or correcting with lunge whip not hitting him just moving him away from me) and telling him NO! I only want him to come to me when "I tell him to, not when he decides". Then he kicks at me sometimes. They are playing and see us as another playmate but you must establish dominance over her.....you ARE the dominant mare in her herd. It's quite cute and endearing to have a foal run up to you but just picture them at 1200 LBS. running up and then turning around to kick at you as an adult just playing....unacceptable! The main thing I had to do was anticipate Romeo's and Slick's behavior BEFORE they did it. The more you can read her (spend time), the easier it will be, stay safe and don't trust her too far yet when leading. If she's spooky, then her behavior is unpredictable (I got dragged by a filly that I thought was leading well). Do you have a round pen? There's a huge benefit to round pen training if you do. Personally....when all my horses go to the round pen to blow off steam and gain their respect immediately you really don't have the tricks/monkey business, then leading is a breeze. I realize not everyone has a round pen.....just food for thought....you are doing a great job and wanted to share my experiences with you with foals!! Having fun and staying safe are the most important aspects of training young ones! Glad you are feeling much better! Chance is SO cute! Wish I was there to help you! Luanne
I love hearing about the adventures of Chance and Paint Girl. You are the best owner!
Keep on keepin' on.
Oh she is all full of being a new horse with a great home and it sounds like she is having real fun. Sounds like that little horse is doing so well with you! It is such a huge thing, having a little one to bring up properly! You are a true brumby parent! Isn't it kind of adorable that she may have been trying to get you to PLAY with her??? That's way cool!
