A few years ago, a casino was put in right outside our neighborhood. Soon after, our neighborhood started experiencing break-ins, mailbox vandalism and theft. I, unfortunately, was one of the mail theft victims. Someone stole my outgoing bills, tore them open, took my checks and threw out the remains onto a road, where someone picked them up and took them to the post office. I received the remains in an envelope from the post office, and was then able to quickly put a stop on my checks, alert my credit card companies and change my acct. numbers, and close my checking acct. and reopen a new one. It was a very big hassle, but I was thankful that some good person out there did the right thing and notified the post office, which in turn notified me, and I was able to prevent being an identity theft victim.
Taking a bite out of crime.......

A couple months ago, on one of my days off, I was out working with Chance. I had just come inside to eat lunch and was on the phone talking to my sister, when I happen to see a cop car drive by, very slowly, with lights on and the siren chirping every few seconds. A couple minutes later, another cop car drives by doing the same thing. Then I see a Sheriff's truck drive by with the K-9 unit in back. Hmmm.... they only bring in the K-9's for serious stuff. So I knew this had to be serious. After about 45 minutes I decided to drive through my neighborhood to see what was going on. I passed a parked cop car, and then about 6 other cop cars drove by me. I saw a man standing at the end of his driveway on his cell phone, with a couple cop cars in his driveway. So I assumed that his house had been broken into, but they don't call in the K-9 unit for a break in around here. The K-9 unit only gets called in on serious crimes. One of my neighbors had alerted my OH's mom that a kid with a backpack had broken into a neighbors house, and the cops thought it could possibly be this other fugitive, that has been on the run from the cops for months.
Don't mess with these choppers!

Two days later, on my way home from work, at a house right outside my neighborhood, there were tons of detectives, crime scene tape and a coroner's van. Oh goodness.... now what?!
If you see these eyes, you better be scared, very scared......

I found out that a dead body was found in the field at this house. It ended up being the "kid" with the backpack. But the kid was not a kid, but a 25 year old man who had a drug problem. He was also the same man that broke into our neighbors house 2 days prior. Apparently, the same day that the house was broken into, and after the cops left, the neighbor was driving around and saw the man that broke into his house. The neighbor yelled at the man to stop, then pulled out a gun, and as he says "fired a few warning shots". Well, the man was running the other direction and was hit in the back a few times. The man made it as far as the house right outside our neighborhood and died in their stream. Now this neighbor is being charged with murder. He can't use self defense, since he wasn't on his property at the time.
This oughta take care of any mad man!! Who would get within 25 feet of this mess?

Last weekend while I was at work, my OH calls me to say the cops are back in our neighborhood. My OH was just getting ready to go run errands when he saw this, so he approached the cop and asked what was going on. The cop said they were looking for an armed man that was seen jumping a fence in the area, and that the K-9's were on their way again. Oh great...... My OH was still going to leave, but my sister was here waiting for her farrier to arrive and begged him to stay. Once her farrier appt. was over, my OH took my sister to get hay. On their way out of our neighborhood, the cops had set up a road block and searched his truck and asked if anyone that shouldn't be in his truck, was in there. My OH looks at my sister and says "Well....." My poor sis. They never found the man.
She can take off at lightening speed........

I am always very cautious when home alone. I keep all doors locked and if I am outside, I have my dogs with me. I will definitely be more aware of my surroundings. My dogs are very good at noticing what shouldn't be on our property. I also think Sadie would protect me and possibly go after anyone that tried to harm me. Bailey on the other hand.....well......what can I say. He probably would lick a stranger to death, but I don't think he would protect me.
Don't worry, this one has an eye on you! And is one I definitely would not mess with!

Our homeowner's association has been talking for a couple years now about putting in an electronic gate at our entrance. We have only one way in and one way out of our neighborhood. We just received a letter today, that the association will be having an emergency meeting to discuss the gate option again. I am all for it. I don't care that it will be a small incovenience. My OH is against it. He hates inconvenience's. But you know what? I don't think a gate will prevent everything, but if it prevents just one break in, vandalism and mail theft, I say let's do it! I also don't think it will give anyone around here a false sense of security. We are all aware of the problem and I think that if anything, we all will be on the lookout even more.
So let's hope that my quiet, peaceful neighborhood goes back to being just that, quiet and peaceful. And that we have no more mad men running around. I just want things to go back to what they used to be, electronic gate and all!

OMGosh!!! WOW that is alot of BAD things to happen WAY to close to home!! Thank God you guys never had any issues!!
ps~ I had such giggles over your captions over Bailey's pictures LOL!!! And I LOVE the new header!! The pictures of the girls are awesome!!
I LOVE the new header, do the horses have new bridles? Pretty!
Wow, that's some bad stuff going on around you, I would be scared; but i think I have enough dogs around me that no one would get close to the house without the "dog alarm" going off.
I can't believe how much Sadie and Lucy look alike! I love their coloring, so pretty. I don't know what Lucy would do if someone was threatening me, now Sadie on the other hand looks like she would knock them down and roll them in the mud! (Lucy loves to be a grunge dog too! LOL)
A gate *might* deter some, but unless you plan on having it manned round the clock, ... well, I just dont know how it would stop someone who REALLY wanted to get in.
However, you have vocal dogs. THAT is going to be your personal best bet. The next, if you are not comfortable and CAPABLE with a firearm is bear grade pepper spray.
The guy who "fired a few warning shots"? ... He NEEDS to be charged! If you are not in fear for your life, on your property, CALL THE COPS. That is THEIR job. If the Bad Guy is on YOUR property, coming at you aggressively, then Yeah, shoot him. But running away from you, across someone else's field? Bad bad lapse in judgment there.
Keep those mean ol' chompers close by! Heres hoping that things settle down out there, once the Bad Guys realize that your neighborhood isn't going to take any crap from anyone ;)
Oh my gosh! That is crazy. A few warning shots!? Woooooowww! I would be steering clear of that neighbor.
Funny thing about attack dogs, My boyfriend and I were joking around and I got my toes stepped on and hollered (having a big blood blister on one from a horse stomping it) and Savanah comes out of nowhere, teeth bared and latched onto his leg! It took a bit of convincing that he was not hurting me.
Good dog
That must be really scary to have all that going on so close to home. At least you have your wonderful animals to keep you company and protect you (and your OH, of course!), but I hope they get the mess sorted out soon and things get back to "normal" for you guys.
so sorry you having to deal with these houligans! you might think about installing security cameras just in case...and the poor man charged with murder. that is awful! i think in texas if you are protecting your neighbor's house you are ok...i remember a case like that a couple of years ago. i pray you and your family and animals stay safe! a gate will help. yes, if they want to come in they will but sometimes a deterant like that might turn them around and find something easier. good luck!
A few warning shots?? holy crap!! In Canada you can't carry a hand gun in your vehicle ,or at least not easily ,I t must be trigger locked and in the trunk, with shells locked up. Not sure how I feel about the gun laws in general but east access ,seems to make that kind of thing more common. Stay safe girl. The fact that you have dogs , and seem to have a fairly irregular schedule ,might help. Hope the nieghborhood settles . A gate sounds good to me. Can you get increased patrolling as well?
Holy socks! That's insane! I hear ya on the mail theft, isn't that the biggest PITA ever?
Murder though, that's wild. You don't fire warning shots. You pull out a gun, you shoot to kill and mean it.
That's just crazy out there. I hope it gets better and quiet. Get more dogs like me. 11 dogs and no one gets in here w/o me (and the whole neighborhood) knowing it. That's their JOB :)
Wow! That is really scary! Personally I'm a big fan of gates. Our driveway is gated and I'm very glad for it. We have had several burglaries in our neighborhood too, though nothing crazy with tons of cops and shootings (but it is probably only a matter of time since I live in redneck hillybilly-ville), and I have noticed a few new gates and fences going up. In my mind, gates are a pretty good deterrent as a car parked outside of the gate by the street being loaded up with stuff would look pretty darn suspicious!
Hope things calm down for you guys! Love the pics, those are great!
First, love the new blog layout, especially the header! Secondly, crazy!! My parents live in a neighborhood that sounds very similar to yours, and lately they have been having all sorts of crime problems too. First, several vehicle break ins, then a couple weeks ago the cops issued a search warrant on the house across the street from them for weapons possession. They confiscated 10 firearms!! Just goes to show you that crime can be anywhere. Stay safe, and sic those dogs on ANY suspicious characters!
Well that stinks! I hope they find a solution. From your photos of your neighborhood, it sure does look nice. Great dog photos!
I hope the scary neighborhood stuff stops soon. At least you have more than one watchful eye around. Chance sees it all and she will nicker to your puppies and Sadie will chew the bad guy to pieces!
I hear what you're saying. We moved to our rural neighborhood about 7 years ago because we wanted a little more land (so the neighbors were farther away) and really liked the laid back, country lifestyle. However, in the last year or so, the area is going through some changes. It used to be that people moved here to enjoy the peace and quiet, keep their horses on their land, and ride their ATVs. Neighbors watched out for each other. Now we have people moving up here for reasons other than those (I don't know exactly what the reasons are, but they don't have horses and aren't "country folk"). These people don't wave, even if you wave at them first, and aren't very neighborly...luckily I don't have any leaving too close. And the crimes have definitely increased. In fact we had a double-shooting about a miles from the house last week! But, that's why I have a pitbull (I know there won't be a stranger in my house when I walk in!) and a concealed weapons permit! Sad that things like this happen!
Arrrrrgh! It's no fair when something like that happens...just continue to be aware and stay safe! Do you have your dates for for the show yet??? Are you excited? We have terrible storms down here right now. The holding water feild across from our houes is full of water...and ducks! 18 were fed whole wheat hot dog buns this am. LOL I just have to feed everything I see!
Oh my that is unnerving and I know you all value your quiet lifestyles! I hate it when things change and those darn casinos bring the worst around. I am sorry to those who like them, but they do! We are getting over run with them here too. What else ruins a good quiet farm community is kids and those ATV's roaring all around the place!
GAH!!! I just deleted the message you sent me and it was in my spam folder for some reason, so it didn't get moved into the trash folder for me to retrieve!
My heart skipped a beat when I realized it was just gone!
Can you e-mail me with that info again about meeting up in Scottsdale?
I hope it works out. I love the Arabian Shows and it would be great to finally meet you in person, too.

Thanks! Sorry about the snafu!

I just went back and read your post. Scary!
Darn it when the developers start putting in stuff like Walmarts and casinos. Nothing good can come of out that in a rural area.
It just bring crime and people driving in your neighborhood that don't belong there.
The gate is a great idea! We've not had any problems around here, but we have no casinos within 50 miles of us and the closest store is over 8 miles away. But we do live off a busy county road and our house can be seen from that road.
We sometimes get people who drive around just looking at the houses and horses or who are trying to sell stuff or preach.
I want to install a gate at the end of our driveway to keep them from just driving up our driveway.
I loved the photos of Sadie and Chance. That one of Sadie all dirty! Wow! With all that fur how do you get her clean again....and keep her that way? Maybe you can spray her with teflon? lol!
~Lisa
That's outrageous! We had a guy shoot a man who was trying to bust down his front door, and they charged him with murder too. I think we all need to move to Texas where property owners are protected by the law.
I once had a man scale the fence into my patio when I lived in a townhome. He then scaled the next fence, and shortly afterward, a cop scaled the same fence, ran across my patio, and scaled the next fence. We also had the FBI out here where we live now trying to apprehend some fugitives who were hiding out across in the house across the street. And you know I've had my outgoing bills stolen too. I can totally relate to the worry and hassle in that. People have enough problems without other people creating more for them.
Well, talk about some good neighbors going bad!! That is nuts!! You are lucky with your animals. A lot of crazy people don't like dogs and other animals. I know a lot of times down here people won't even think about coming near me when I am walking my dogs. Not that they are super scary or anything, but because the scary men are afraid of the dogs.
And Mrs. Mom cracks me up, with her bear strength pepper spray!! Gotta love that woman!!
I would be all for the gate!! I hope you get it!
Oh my! What craziness! I'm gobsmacked! I don't know what to even say!
Okay, you've got me excited about Scottsdale now. I've put in a request for a few days off and considering that I've been putting in 12 to 14-hour days lately, they'd better understand that I deserve it. I'd also love to get out of this freezing snow for a while, even if it is into some rain.
Wow...ditto all of that! You take care girl! Great post.
The gate will help, but dogs are the best deterrent.
In Texas the person has to be on your property. The saying here used to be that you needed the drag rule - if they weren't on your property, drag them over.
Frankly these people just need dogs since someday they are going to kill an innocent kid.
Oh yeah. That's already happened. Sigh.
Hope it all works out!
One of the police officers that stops by our restaurant often (its on his "beat" so he comes in to see how things are going) says that THE best crime deterrent is a dog. He'd get a dog over an alarm system any day.
As for our dogs, I think Misty would protect me. Comet looks and sound more intimidating but the most harm he would do is wag to hard and bruise your leg lol
Pretty scary stuff in your neighbourhood, hope it gets better!
As for the neighbour being charged, well guns are to be used responsibly and shooting at someone running AWAY from you? Well poor judgement, there's no way that's self defense.
Cyte pictures of Sadie girl. Love the mud one. I think she would defininately protect you. Also I wish you guys would lock the doors when you are outside. Carry a key around your neck. Someone could sneek in while you where in the pasture, since the dogs don't go in with you. Miss you, HUGS.
Wow! All that unwelcome activity! The world is stuffed with such lost and ridiculous people! I don't know what to think! I hate that you can't be at home and totally relax with all the doors and wiondows open!! Maybe your new filly will rear and clobber any trespasser! She probably knows a bad seed when she spies it!
It is a pretty setting by your house--hard to believe there's crime there. Sad story about the shooting. Very sad. I agree with some of the other commenters--shooting someone in the back as they're running away--not self-defense. I have a gun and I carry it with me on rides and out to the barn, but I'd only use it in self-defense.
We live by a Casino, too, but I haven't noticed any increase in crime. We put up our own gate, though, and I'm always really cautious.
Your new header photos are fantastic! Look at that little filly Chance growing up! I just love her ears...Maduro's is the same...looks like a buckskin color inside of them!
How many acres do you have there? I've heard of equine housing additions before but didn't know they have entire farming additions! That's horrible you have such crime right there so close. Fritz does remind me of Derby (our black/white paint mare too. Brandy has such a beautiful head in that photo. Which one do you like to ride the most? I'm sure you like them all for different reasons. I need to go back and catch up on some of the posts on your grooming job. I knew you had started a new one because I remember you working hard but I've not been able to keep up with the latest happenings. I think I read once you would take photos of the grooming process start to finish but I didn't get to see any if you posted them. Hope all is well and you're feeling better by now! Have a great weekend! Luanne
Great post!
Enjoyed my visit..

OMG, that would sure make anyone nervous, all that terrible stuff happening so close to you. I think the gate is probably a good idea too.
When I first moved here in 2008, I would leave the back door open all the time. I don't know why, because nothing terrible has really happened out here, but I've started keeping it closed and locked, even on a sunny day, which I really hate to do. But we are so isolated, so alone, that it would be far too easy for some wanderer or fugitive to walk in and I don't want to make it that easy!
Stay safe... and BTW, I really love the new look of your blog. Much cleaner, and easier to read too! :)
Wow, what crazyness!! I hope this gets taken care of somehow, stay safe!! Keep that Sadie dog right with you! I love that first pic of her, totally reminds me of Duke. He always seemed to have hair in his mouth lol!
Lisa~ Teflon is a great idea!! I wish someone would come up with a Teflon spray for dogs!! Cuz I could really use it!
Luanne~ We have 5 acres. Our entire neighborhood is made up of 5 acre lots, but some people were lucky back in the day and bought two 5 acre lots, so they have 10 acres.
I like riding both my horses, but Brandy is my favorite. I still have confidence issues with Fritzy, but am slowly working those out!
Ugh. i'm so grateful I have lived in many places where I haven't had to lock my doors. Not too many of those places left anymore. : (

Holy cow! What a crazy story. Now I'm going to worry about you. Thank goodness for dogs:)
