Gosh darn it. Just when my back has been feeling pretty darn good, it has to go and putz out on me again! I was going to a few Chiro appointments a week, and we had just gotten to a point where we could slow them down to a couple a week, then once every few weeks. I was doing great. My Chiro was very happy with how I was doing, even though I still had pain, but it was very minimal from what it had been. In the last month or two, on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the worst, I had been around a 3. I have constant back pain still, but a 3 is doable. When it was bad, the pain was around an 8, and that is about what I am at today. So I thought I was doing really well.
I had a Chiro appointment next week, but after today, well, I had to call and see if I could go in sooner. None of the Chiro's were in the office today (just my bad luck, again!) so I am going tomorrow after work.
Since the busy show season has slowed down, I haven't been doing as much bending and lifting. Plus we had some extra help at the barn during the summer. Once of our 14 yr old clients was coming in and helping us do turnouts and getting horses ready. That was a huge help. But school started for her, so now it has just been me and another girl, A. We are waiting for a new girl to start next week. Then A, the other girl, got injured the other day. The same ankle injury I had last February, which I still have some problems with. So she didn't work today. I was all alone. And being all alone is not a good thing when you already have a bad back, are shorthanded as it has been and work at a very busy training barn. So my back went out.
By around 2:00 p.m., I was feeling like I had a hitch in my giddyup. I was walking around like my hip was totally out of whack, which it probably is. I even took a prescription Ibuprofen, which I hate taking. Now I know why, it didn't help me at.all. I am in dire need of an adjustment. Such is life..............
Silly Mustang trailer loading update: I wasn't able to continue trailer loading training the day after the first trailer training session due to a torrential downpour. It rained cats and dogs all.day.long. No break whatsoever. So on Wednesday when I got home from work, the day before my back went out, I brought Chance out for another training session. When I climbed into the trailer, Chance put a foot in, backed out, put 2 feet in, backed out, then she walked right on in. She happily munched her hay. I decided to tie her and unhooked the divider. I slowly shut it and I had to push it against her body to get her to move over. She stepped over no problem. I latched it, stood back and watched. At first she was a little worried about what was going on, but she relaxed and was fine standing in the stall and eating her hay. After a few minutes, I opened the divider and untied her and walked her out. We again went back in, I tied her up and shut the divider. She wasn't scared at all. I left her in the stall a little longer that time, then opened it, walked her out and put her back in her pasture. She is getting really good at exiting the trailer. Once I get her turned around, she immediately stops and waits for the next cue. She does not just jump out. This is exactly what I want. Such a smart little Mustang! This weekend I will load up Brandy and Chance and take them for a short drive. I am hoping that Chance will be okay. I am a very overprotective horse owner, probably a little too much sometimes and I will worry the whole time. But I am sure she will be fine. Plus her adoptive mother will be in the trailer with her, so she should handle it easily.
I got to do something at work the other day that I don't think I have ever experienced before. Well, I have, but not quite like this. My boss asked me if I wanted to ride one of our western purebred Arabians. I was like, yeah! She has been shown in junior horse classes (snaffle and bosal), but since she is over age for the junior classes now, she is going to be trained in the bridle (curb). I have ridden a western horse at work, but mostly english (saddleseat) horses, which is funny because I am not an english rider, I am a western rider. Once I got on Angel, my boss gave me a lesson on her. I was in total awe at how well trained she was and how much I need to learn about training a show horse! Even my show horse I had in my youth wasn't this well trained. I used my body to go left or right, there was no need to use the reins. I just had to move my right hip down and over to the left and she would turn to the right. There was so much involved in keeping her collected and straight that I think I was starting to get confused with everything my boss was telling me to do. I jogged and loped both directions, and my boss said I had Angel going nicely the second direction. Goodness! It was a lot of work. But in a good way. Just trying to listen to my boss telling me which leg to use, when to use it, which hip to use and when to use it, push her back together, how to cue her to lope, use this leg, use that leg, use both legs....I was a little confused, plus trying to remember everything he is telling me and figure it all out while I was riding. I think my stirrups were too long, so I felt like my legs were flopping all over. If only I had video of the ride, then I could critique myself! But my boss said I did well, without ever having ridden her before, I didn't have spurs on and she hadn't been worked much at all in 2 months. I sure hope so, because I sure would love to learn how to ride her, the way she is trained and do it all on my own!
I will be back at the end of the weekend for an update on Chance's first trailer ride!

Hope the back feels better soon - back pain is terrible!
Chance's trailer loading is great - she seems to be taking it in stride - good sign for the future.
Riding Angel sounds like fun!
Chance is coming right along and lucky you to have the opportunity to ride that horse AND get a lesson!
Sorry your back punked out on you again. Do you wear a brace while working? I wear one whenever I'm grooming or moving tack. On Monday, I forgot to take it off and wore it while riding. My back did so well, I may continue to do that.
My brace is just one of the ones like you see Home Depot people wearing. You can get them at HD or WalMart. I cut the suspenders off and it works great. I wear it when doing housework, too.
Give it a try. Can't hurt.
Hope you feel better soon with the bad back/hip thing. That must be horrid at work.
Chance continues her little cutie pie good girl routine!
Angel sounds like a fun ride. Isn't it funny how they know what the slightest hip or leg pressure means? That is a well-trained horse!
When we got our Paint, he was a well trained show horse and especially in WP. He HATED me riding him until I got lessons and figured all that stuff out. It's all such subtle clues and I'd always rode old school horses with dead sides that nothing short of a hard KICK would get them moving. It's pretty cool when your horse will move off with the tiniest movement of your foot and a whispered cluck and pick up a lope with a tiny kiss or a little tap of the heel!! Hopefully you'll get to ride Angel a lot and come to feel all that subtle stuff so you can train Chance like that!
And speaking of Chance - great job on the loading!! Just be extra careful with your back being out so bad. The few trailering incidents I've had have all resulted in wrenching my back either trying to stop what was happening or getting the heck out of the way!
Good girl Chance! You is a smart cookie.
Back pain...Ugghh..nuf said, right?
Whoo-hoo..I knew you would be on one of those fancy show horses in no time. Now a person knows how most of the owners feel when they try to get on and ride their horses. Don't worry, you will get it all figured out in no time.
Sorry your back is sore again,it is rotten. Hope the chiro can get you comfortable again quickly! sounds nice riding the show mare , maybe if you get another chance when your sister andher camera are around...
The trailer loading sounds like it's going great. Sorry about your pain though.
Oh no, I'm so sorry about your back. That totally stinks! I hope with time and an adjustment, you're back to new again :)
There's nothing like riding a very well trained western pleasure horse (especially the hooky necked saddle horse types like Arabs and Morgans) - I'm glad you were able to hop on Angel. Maybe you'll be able to show her, too - who knows!?!
Sorry about your back. I hope it gets better fast. After my back injury last week I totally have new respect for people who have to deal with it on a regular basis. I was completely useless lol. The muscle relaxers helped a lot though. I was skeptical, but they do work!!
Sounds like Chance is doing absolutely fabulous!! I can't wait to hear how she does on her first trailer ride. :)
Oh no! I'm sorry you've got a hitch in your giddy up. I thought you were going to write that you got a new hitch for your truck! haha!
Sure hope your back feels better soon.
I usually find that when my back or hips are aching that riding....just slowly plodding along (not trotting or cantering) releases the tension if you truly let your back follow the movement of your horse. I always feel like I had a chiro adjustment or massage treatment after a slow ride like that.
The ride on Angel sounds heavenly (get it? angel..heavenly? hehe!)
Congrats on the successful trailer loading. Chance is one smart little filly, that's for sure.
~Lisa
Chsnce is one smart girl! Glad she is doing the loading thing so good.
Sounds like Angel is fun to ride. Hope your back gets better soon sweetie!
Congrats on Chance being such a good student AND your awesome ride at work :D
I feel ya on the back pain. Mine's been worse lately. Probably because the government changed how they fund chiro now. Used to cost $16 for an appointment and now its about $34!!
Oh girl I fell ya on the back pain...Not a good deal!! I really hope you get everything back into place and feeling better!!
That is awesome progress for Chance with the trailer!! I cannot wait to hear how she does for the ride!!!
How great is that! Riding such an awesomely trained horse! I bet you looked great!!
Back pain SUCKS !!
Good job on Angel and wow with Chance! Will you come teach my two girls about the trailer please?
I use the whole "lets do some ground work first. Ok your listening... great walk into this box now... look I have GRAIN !" thing. Not the right way I know... and there will be a day it doesn't work... then what?
how proud you must be of your little Chance!!! If I may offer some advice...the safest way to load a horse is to train them that when the lead goes up over their back.. is their cue to step up into the trailer, then you can step up and tie them. you are not in the way of them getting in and less chance of ingery. I put some treats in the hay bags too...and goota get out of the way for Jesse and Lady cause they are eager to load. I assume that this is your goal with Chance.
Sorry about your back...I have been there. the back brace sounds like a good idea for you to try...
THere just isnt anything in the world like riding a finished western horse... it feels like magic:)
Oh no the back pain is back, hope you get it all figured out soon.
Sounds like Angel is fun to ride, and Chance seems so smart and easy to train.
I'm glad your back seemed better today. Glad you got to ride a fancy Arab, wish I could have seen it! I think you would look great showing WP on Arabs! :-)
PONY GIRL
I am so sorry to hear that your back is giving you trouble! have you ever been rolfed? Maybe that would help rearrange your naughty muscles! I think it is waaaay neat that you were riding a prized arabian. That must have felt awesome up there. I love the way arabians look with their little dishy faces. So striking. And they always seem so friendly at horse shows. One lady told me hers was like a little dog--following her around everywhere as she did her chores!
Oh my, no fun at all on your back! Sure hope it's feeling better by now! Hooray on Chance and the trailer loading session! WOW again!
And holy cow am I TOTALLY JEALOUS! I would so love to ride a well trained western horse! Or English/saddleseat/whatever! I'm not picky! It's such an experience to get on horses that know what they are doing and try to get them figured out! My trainer has put me on a couple "finished" reiners and it's a freaking hoot! Granted I totally feel like a dumba$$ up there, and like they (the horse) knows it and are giving me the finger, but it's still such an experience! It really helps me figure out what something is supposed to feel like and what buttons they are supposed to have, etc. too so I know what I'm working towards with my horses.
Way fun! And I'm all caught up! Yay!
I had a question for you about your work. I was wondering what kind of saddles they use on their western horses. I have always used a Circle Y with an Arab tree on my guy, but he has recently filled out in the shoulders more due to proper work and muscle growth and an Arab tree no longer fits. Do you use Arab trees or semi-QH bars?
Heather~ We use western saddles for work (training), and they are made specifically for our barn, they aren't a "known" name brand. I am not sure what tree they have, but I would probably say they are semi-QH because we have a lot of half Arabs, that are quite big. I will have to look at the show saddles to see what they are and I will let you know. I guess I have never really paid much attention to what they are. Silly me!
The english saddles (cutbacks and huntseat) saddles are all from The Arabian Saddle Company and all have the Arab tree.
I use a saddle with semi-QH bars on my Arab at home. It fits her fine but she could also wear a saddle with an Arab tree.
I feel your pain. I hope you get some help at the barn soon and your chiropractor fixes you right up. The lesson sounds like it was a cool experience. I'm sure you did better than you think. It's hard when someone is telling you what to do and you don't have time to think about it. The best instructors I've had have told me what to do then said "There! Did you feel that?" The memory of how it felt is so helpful. Sounds like you are doing a great job with trailer loading!
Well I hope that your "hitch" is gone by now. : )
And Chance is such a good girl! I love the pics from your previous post. She looks totally relaxed....
I had the plesure of riding a Morgan mare who had just returned from their big nationals as the leading WP...something, something, mare, and it was wonderful indeed.
Thay can read your mind. : )
Sorry to hear your back is still giving you problems. That sucks.
Sounds like Chance is doing great and your lesson on Angel sounds great too. Glad you got a chance to do that.
