Ghostly Encounters

This might seem like a strange thing to bring up and a totally off the wall blog post, but when I was younger I experienced something that I have never forgotten and I feel like I want to share it with you all. I don't know where you all stand on the subject of ghosts, and if you believe in them, or not.

Throughout my childhood, I wasn't sure where I stood on the whole ghost thing. Did I believe in them? Did I not believe in them? I did know that I was open to the possibility that ghosts were real. It wasn't until I was 19 yrs old when I experienced something totally out of this world.

Here's the story:

My friend, M, and I had decided to go over to a friends house on a warm, clear summer night. I knew the girl whose house we were going over too, but had never been to her house before. This girl, K, had lived there for a couple years with her young son. It was a good sized 3 bedroom house with a very open floor plan. When you walked into the house, you entered into the living room, open to the dining room and kitchen. The master bedroom/bath was on the left and on the right was a long hallway with 2 bedrooms and another bathroom. We were planning on having a couple beers so we were going to be spending the night at K's house. We had only been there for about an hour when K brought up the subject of her house being haunted. At first I don't think I believed her and I thought that she was trying to scare us. But then I started thinking "why would she do that?". She then told us that before she moved in to this house, a man had died in one of the bedrooms, and that this room had been a source of a lot of the activity. K told us that she used to have a lot of problems and it got so bad that she had to have someone come in to get rid of the ghost (I am not exactly sure what you call it when someone comes in to get rid of ghosts). It was so bad that she couldn't stay there for awhile and even when she moved back in, she still had problems but not to the same extent as before.

For some reason, I think in our brave little minds at the time, M and I wanted to see this room. K proceeded to tell us that upon entering the room, that it was different. She always kept the door closed, and when she opened the door and turned the light on, it was instantly cold. I mean really cold. It was a summer evening, we were wearing shorts and t-shirts but this room was ice cold. She said that this room was like this all the time. She could turn the heat on and it would stay cold. Really cold. She then took us into the bedroom right next door to this one and she opened the door, and the temp was normal just like the rest of the house. So at this point I was a little freaked out. That was just not normal.

We were a little freaked out to say the least. So we went back to the living room and were just sitting on the couch talking when all of a sudden the loudest banging noise I had ever heard was coming from the master bedroom. It was actually like someone was running back and forth along that wall with a baseball bat beating the crap out of the side of the house, back and forth, back and forth and extremely fast. M and I freaked out. K took us to her bedroom and to the door that goes outside. She opened it, and no one was there. She told us that this happens, but it had been awhile since it was that bad. We went back to the living room and sat back down. Then the kitchen lights went out, came on, went out. The dining room light went out, came on, went out. Then the beating along the master bedroom wall started again. The lights were going off and on, but only in the kitchen and then the dining room, not at the same time. Then the beating on the wall started again, but this time on the kitchen/dining room side of the house. This went on for at least an hour.

I remember wanting to leave, but my friend M wanted to stay. We stayed. I needed to use the bathroom, but we would not go to the bathroom by that bedroom by ourselves so we always took another person with us. Eventually the activity stopped and we did stay the night there. I never went back to that house. I have always wondered how long K ended up living there, I never found that out.

I don't know if what we experienced was paranormal activity, but from what our friend K told us, it was. And it is something I will never forget. I am definitely more open to the possibility that the paranormal does exist, especially with what I went through. There was no other explanation for what happened in that house, or why that bedroom was so ice cold, when the rest of the house was warm.

I have only told a few people about this experience. I think the main reason for that is because there aren't a lot of people I know that believe in ghosts. I have heard stories from a couple people that didn't believe either, until they had a ghostly encounter themselves. I think it's that way with most people.

Have any of you had some kind of experience with this? Do you believe in ghosts, or not? I would love to hear any stories you have. And really, I am not crazy! I had 2 witnesses that night (and only 2 drinks!)

I have personally never experienced something to that extent, but my dad was constantly conversing with people from the other side. He had a knack for drawing them, I guess. Everywhere he ever lived had a 'ghost' and he was perfectly fine with acknowledging them and having conversations with them.

Our ranch house used to freak the ever loving heck out of me and I was terrified to stay there by myself.

Oddly enough, when I went home in '06, it was like walking into a different house. It felt peaceful and I never had a problem being there alone again. I told my mom that and she just shrugged and said it was because my dad wasn't there stirring up trouble with the afterlife. :-/ I had no idea my mom even acknowledged that kind of thing, but I guess having lived with my dad all those years, she knew full well his capabilities. ??

I am glad I read your post in the morning!!! I think that is all very scary. I guess I believe, although I've never had any contact with ghosts personally. I wonder why K lived in that house. You cracked me up asking who you would call - don't you remember - Ghostbusters!? lol!

Hmmm... I have chatted often to those who have passed over, but they rarely respond in any kind of concrete manner. Never experienced this kind of event though - I'm such a practical soul that I would be checking plumbing and rising damp in that room before I even considered a ghost. I'm a bit annoying like that!

That said, I'd love to see/meet someone from the other side. I'd have a million questions!!

I'm really open to the possibility of ghosts/paranormal. I've never had my own experience, but my mom and aunt have a few interesting tales to tell.

I loved reading your story. It totally gave me goose bumps and I bet it was an extraordinarily scary and amazing thing to experience. Thanks for sharing!

Um scary!! I would have been out of there in a flash. I'm glad I didn't read this at night. I have enough trouble getting to sleep lol. My logical brain would be looking for logical explanations, like someone playing a trick on you, but if I couldn't find any answer, supposing I stayed around long enough to try, I guess maybe I might possibly believe . . . I'm a skeptic! My dad has stories about talking to ghosts though and I know he wouldn't lie so I guess I'm not totally against the idea, it just freaks me out a little.

I loved reading your story and have always been intrigued with the thought of ghosts and such. I have never had any of those kinds of experiences, but know a girl who says her house is haunted. She had a priest and an Indian medicine man come to her house to try to get rid of it. (She lives in Indian country in SD). The house I grew up in had a basement and I always felt like something was down there with me. I used to do what I needed to do and then dart as fast as I could up the stairs! HA! BTW…have you seen Paranormal Activity? It freaked me out!

I have never expreienced anything like that , if I had I doubt 2 drinks would have cut it . That said, you know those "feelings " you get , that something is not quite right or really wrong? Some one told me that that was friends and family who had gone before ,watching over me

Yikes! Your story sounds similar to The Amityville Horror. It sounds like you came across a very disturbed spirit. I have a long history with ghosts, but none of them have been mean. Most were either loved ones or strangers who recently passed away. I've been compiling my experiences into a book. Usually when you read or see a TV show or movie about hauntings, they call them demonic hauntings. I prefer not to believe in demons, and hope I never meet one.

I've never had experiences until lately. I've been aware of the presence of my dog who died last year--Elsa. Two days ago I thought I saw her trotting down the driveway. I said her name and talked to her and it felt right.

I believe that those who pass into the spiritual realm have a choice to stay near or go away. I always hoped she'd stay near, and she has.

Wow thats pretty weird! I am kinda a sceptic, not saying there is no such thing as ghosts, but I have never encountered any and am not sure I wouldlike too!

Freeeeaky! Wow, I'm pretty sure I would not have been able to stay the night there! I remember one time when I was at my friend's house and we thought we heard a ghost. Her step-dad was caretaker for a little ranch that had a two story dorm building. We decided to be brave and go explore it. We had joked that it was haunted. So we are sneaking around the first floor when we hear footsteps running above us. We had a few moments of freaking out and then decided to be really brave and go upstairs to see what it was. While we were up there we suddenly hear a horn blaring and some one yelling outside and more running footsteps above us. We hauled butt out of there, pretty darn scared at this point and there is her step-dad in his truck honking and yelling at the trouble making neighbor boys who had climbed on the roof of the building. We had a pretty good laugh over that. I guess I'm still a little skeptical, just because I haven't experienced anything concrete, but I don't doubt that people have had real experiences with ghosts!

I definitely believe in ghosts. I wouldn't say my house is haunted, nothing happens on a regular basis, but I have had one door that has locked on its own before. One of those times I was on the outside of it and ended up locked out of the house with no one home to let me back in. I also heard whistling prior to that.
Nothing scary though, and its only happened a couple of times. I also love watching those "ghost hunter" shows on tv. I watch all of them pretty much. I would love to be involved in a ghost investigation sometime, lol.

I did my post about the paranormal in my series about my trip to Tulsa. Some people thought I was just seeing things because of lack of sleep but I had the experience twice on that trip. One at the horse show when I was more than rested and then once on my trip home. Believe me I know it wasn't from lack of sleep.

I'd just as soon keep my distance from such experiences.

WOW. I've never had an experience quite like that but I've been in our barn and had that feeling that I was being watched. When I turned around there was no one there of course but my mare was looking pretty intently at something down the aisle.

Then, I smelled the faintest scent of pipe smoke, the exact scent that I remember from the farm manager who used to run the farm before my Dad took over. It scared me but I figure it was Mr. Murray stopping by to check out the farm and my new horse.

BEC~ That is very interesting about your dad. I would not like being scared of being in my house alone. But if I lived in a house like the one I was in, I would move out in a heartbeat. I could not handle it!

Strivingforsavvy~ I have seen Paranormal Activity, along with Ghost Adventures and Ghost Hunters. I actually like to watch those shows, but they are on so late and I am by myself at that hour so I end up getting scared!

Nuzz Muzz~ I have seen shows about demonic entities, and I would never want to meet one. I don't think the ghost in the house I was in was demonic, but he was a very agitated ghost, and from what I remember K telling me, the activity was way worse before I ever stepped foot in that house!

Linda~ That is definitely a neat thing about Elsa. That is one spirit I wouldn't mind hanging around, one from a beloved pet. I always think about my kitty Domino that disappeared a year and a half ago. I keep wishing I'd see a sign of him at some point.

JasperGirl~ I have thought it would be interesting to be part of a ghost investigation, but I don't know if I could handle one. Probably not!

this is a great post paint girl! i believe ghosts exist. only had two strange things happen though. one was while i was in gettysburg and we stayed at a haunted hotel but in the 'non' haunted portion. there was a story hour and the man said there was an awful ghost who hated women but he wouldnt say his name or anything else. so i didn't think much about it. that evening we walked back and in the courtyard i felt a sudden compression of my chest where i couldn't breath. it was strange. i was with my parent and my hubby. once i went in our room, it went away. too weird.

christmas 2010 i was putting up the tree in our 'old house' built in 1821. hazel a lovely lady lived there until 2001 and died at the age of 97. everyone said hazel would love me and be glad that we bought the farm which was comforting. this was a new tree that i recently added and this would be the second christmas season. since the old house is filled with family antiques, i have antique ornaments on the tree. so while i decorate, i think about the women who owned mhy ornaments. one was a wealthy benefactor in town, the other was my great grandmother. and of course hazel used to live in the old house. all of a sudden i smelled a strong perfume. i don't wear perfume unless i go out. i thought well maybe i put some on and forgot. i left the room went outside to clear my nasal passages and returned. the smell remained. it went away when i finished decorating. last year it didn't come back though i wanted it too so badly. i think it was either hazel, gwinn, or my great grandmother. interesting....

oh and i have an old old cemetary on the farm with slaves graves...never a problem when i get the horses at night but blue does tend to shy at a certain place, though jessie does not...

Well unlike some of you I DID read this at night! Big mistake, LOL! Never been a fan of the ghostly stuff, I wouldn't live in a haunted home no way~!
I saw a really interesting book in the school library I will check it out for you. It scientifically explains away a lot of those sounds and cold spots and mysteries. It was interesting. I do believe in spirits, in some way, I know that I witnessed a table-tipping once seance that was kind of strange. And I have sleep paralysis from time to time and that can give you the feeling of another person or animal in the room (it's a state where the mind is awake and hte body is paralyzed.) My first instinct was to say perhaps her parents were trying to scare you to go along with the story. But sometimes you know when you experience something "real." Bizarre. What other kind of strange and intersting blog topics are you gonna come up with sis? ;-)

Creepy story!!

Once, my husband and I were camping by a lake and in the middle of the night we heard the creepiest shrieking sound coming from the middle of the lake. When we got home that day, we heard that a man had drowned in the lake the day before.
