Just when you think things are looking up, they start going downhill again. I swear every time I get ahead, it all starts to fall apart. When we arrived home from our vacation, my OH went out to feed the horses. It didn't take long to realize something was wrong with Fritzy. He came to get me and I went out to check her out. It did not look good. She could not walk on her front right and when she would try to take a step, she would throw her leg really high in the air and hop on 3 legs. At first I thought she had a broken leg. Then upon further examination, she was standing on her tip toes on both hind feet. Second thought, laminitis. Then I notice all four legs are extremely hot and swollen. I immediately call my vet. No one answered, so I called another vet I have used in the past. Of course it was after hours, so they have to call the on call emergency vet.
While I wait, I take Fritzy's temp. 102 degrees. Fever. I do not give her any Bute yet, so the vet can see her before she gets anything for the pain. The vet arrives about 45 minutes later. Her first thought was laminitis too. She does an examination and everything looks and sounds okay, except for her legs. Fritzy can barely stand and walk and she won't allow anyone to touch her legs. The vet has us give her 2 grams of Bute and diagnosis Fritzy with Cellulitis (an infection under the skin, that can be caused by a very small cut or any break in the skin, and that is how bacteria gets under the skin) on all fours, which is extremely painful. She has to sedate her in order to clean up her legs, puts on Nitrofurazone, saran wrap and then bandages all fours. The Nitrofurazone works as a sweat and it is supposed to sweat out the infection. She did not want to put her on antibiotics yet. She wanted us to lock her in a 12 x 12 area. Since we don't have a barn, we had to move 3 of our arena panels down to a dry area to make a 12 x 12 stall.
Fritzy with her legs wrapped.
The next day the vet came out to draw blood and take her temp, which was back to normal, and get the blood work to the lab. She wanted to make sure there wasn't anything else going on with her. She called me later to say her WBC came back normal, which is good. But we still needed to get this infection under control. When I got home from work, I was to take the bandages off, rinse off the Nitrofurazone, cold hose her legs, dry them and put on more Furazone, saran wrap and standing wraps. When I got her bandages off, her legs were extremely red, still swollen and very hot. But she was walking better. I hosed her legs and she actually tolerated that pretty well. She pulled her legs away a couple times, but was a very good patient. I then put on the Furazone, saran wrap and standing wraps.
This is where we are at this point. There can be complications of cellulitis. We have to keep a close eye on it because it can lead to laminitis or sloughing of the skin (in horses that have had Strangles, and Fritzy had strangles as a yearling). We also do not want any weeping of the skin.
My OH has had Cellulitis in his knee before, and he knows how painful this is. I saw how much pain he was in when he had it. It was bad. But can you imagine having 4 limbs effected? Especially when those 4 limbs need to hold your body up?
So I will continue treating my girl and hope for the best outcome. I will be taking a break from blogging until I get this under control. I am completely slammed with work and the care of my own horse. I could really use a break right now..................this has not been a good year for me.

Paint Girl--reading this made me SICK for you. I hope what you're doing works and she's on the mend. I've never heard of it before.
That's terrible. I'm so sorry. Hope Fritz is better soon.
Very scary - but she's getting good care and seems to already be on the road to recovery - sending best wishes to you all.
So sorry to hear this! Poor Fritzy! My mare had cellulitis back in August and it was awful, but she only had an issue with one leg. I can't imagine going through that with all 4 of them. I know you'll take good care of Fritzy, but make sure you're taking good care of yourself too.
Hugs to you and Fritzy!
So sorry, wish we could help you ! Sending good thoughts and prayers!
Thinking of you and Fritzy. love auntie
Oh wow I can't imagine how difficult that is to deal with! Sending prayers for a good recovery and a break for you.
So sorry to hear this. Poor Fritzy. You are on the case and it will heal quickly! Good thoughts to you guys and sweet Fritzy.
Sorry about poor Fritz. Sounds terribly painful. We will keep our paws crossed and send good thoughts/vibes your way for you all.

Paint Girl -
I am SO sorry to hear about poor sweet Fritzy! I truly hope she feels better soon :(
Ooooh No!!! That is terrible! And so no what you needed either. I feel so bad for both you and Fritzy. Take care and I'll be hoping that she recovers quickly.
Knee mail headed your way for you and Fritzi. Hope she heals quick and that you can get a breather!!
I've never heard of this before but I have seen the furazone sweats of legs before although I had no clue why they were using them. Poor Fritzy! Hope you get a break soon. It's tough when life piles up like that.
Poor Fritzi, that must hurt! And poor you guys, coming back from vacation to this! I hope she gets better quick.
Poor Fritz, I hope she heals up soon!
Yikes poor Fritzy. I had cellulitis last summer in my arm and it was painful and the doctor got pretty worried and gave me super strong antibiotics, so I feel for her, cant imagine it in all 4 legs.
Oh Paint Girl, sheesh I hate this for you!!!
I hope Fritzi gets better quickly!!!
Hang in there girl, I sure hope there is an end to this infernal rain soon!!!!
Oh my goodness! You do deserve a break. I've never heard of cellulitis, but will have to look it up now. How strange that she managed to get it in all 4 legs. I hope that it heals quickly and you get some peace.
Was your vacation fun at least?

My gosh, I am so sorry to hear about this! I have never dealt with this condition, but I was just talking to someone that has recently and it doesn't sound fun. Best wishes for a speedy recovery for Fritzy and a break for you.
Oh, no! That's really awful; I've never heard of that before. I hope she gets better quickly!
Dang, I thought this was going to be a post about your vacation. Far from it. So sorry for Fritzy & you. WTH? I have never heard of this before & would have thought founder, too. The things we learn. Please keep us posted.
I haven't heard of the details behind this condition before. Gabbrielle has had bloody scabs on her hocks for the past few weeks. I've been bedding down her stall so that she can lay on something soft, but discovered this morning that those scabs can't heal because they are hard as a rock and break open every time she lies down. So, now I'm risking getting kicked every few hours as I put Neosporin and Desitin on the scabs to try to get them to soften up, so she can heal. I'm worried about bacteria. I know how you feel about not even being able to care of your own horses or handle problems at home because your job monopolizes all of your time. I hope everything works out well and fast for you.
I never heard of this condition before. Was there a wound? Where is the infection centered?
So sorry you're having a rough patch.
our daughter Sharon had a bad bout with cellulitus...painful indeed!!! prayer for Fritzy & family :)
When it rains it pours.....literally around here. Hope Fritzy is healing up at least all signs are that she's not getting worse! I do think you need to buy a lotto ticket because your luck is bound to change any day!
I'm glad you at least got to enjoy some sun before coming back to the nightmare.
XO PONY GIRL
oh no, this is awful! i sure hope fritzy recovers 100%. your job is super busy and takes so much of your time. i wish you had something different but something you could love just as well...that keeps you closer to your oh and the babies. life is hard sometimes, just know we are all pulling for you!
What a scary and crazy thing to have happen. Glad it's going ok so far. I'm glad we finally broke down and got stalls. I may never need them now but at least I won't panic if I do! Good luck.
Poor girl! That must be awful! Where does it come from? Is it in the soil? That must be scary.
I understand what you mean about needing a break. I could use one too. I'll send you healing vibes for Fritzy!
Never heard of this...how painful...glad she's OK now...enjoyed the "prison break" post ;~)
