Painting And Paint Nightmares.....

I have had nightmares going on with painting and a Paint. Last Saturday my Paint, Fritzy, was lame in her right hind. It looked pretty ugly. So my first thought is ABSCESS. (Why is it we always assume abscess when a horse goes lame?) I packed an Epsom salt poultice in her hoof for 2 days. I went out to change the poultice on Monday, and oh goodness....Fritzy's leg looked like a tree stump from fetlock to hock. Plus she was even more lame. She was only putting pressure on the toe of her hoof and she could barely walk. I panicked. I told my OH that it didn't look good and most likely wasn't an abscess, but something much worse. I decided to skip the poultice and cold hosed her leg. I then took her temp (it was normal) and put a standing wrap on the swollen leg while my OH went to drag arena panels down to the shed to make Fritzy a stall. I would call my vet first thing the next morning.

When I called my vet, she immediately thought abscess and told me that the leg can swell with a hoof abscess since the hoof can't expand so the swelling will go up the leg. (I never knew a leg could swell like that with a hoof abscess!) My vet said she could be out that afternoon. I left work for an extended lunch break to take care of the vet appointment. I noticed immediately when I got home from work that Fritzy was putting weight on that leg and was bucking and spinning in circles! Great. Just my luck. If only I had waited one more day then I would have known that it was only an abscess!

I brought Fritzy out when my vet arrived and she was full of it! She was rearing, bucking and spinning! She was totally out of control and I was so not happy with her. She has never been like that for the vet. She wouldn't hold still and she was just awful! But the outcome was that yes, it was an abscess and it had burst sometime that morning. It actually burst in 2 places, in the sole by the toe and out the coronet band. Pus was still oozing out. So I felt really stupid, because I should know that a leg can swell with an abscess! Now I know. And I am very thankful that it wasn't anything more serious! Now can that please be the end of the furry vet bills?!? Please?

So my painting nightmare began yesterday. I decided to go for a green room. Yes. Green. I am so not a green person. The green room will be the guest room. But I really wanted to do something different. The green is more like a sage green and it's called Pine Needle. We put the first coat on last weekend. We were almost out of paint so my OH went to get more on Monday night. He started the second coat with what was left with the first can and ended with the new can. Well, I get a note this morning from him saying that the paint isn't the right color. Well, the can says it's the right color, but when I looked in the room, there were 2 different shades of green on the wall. When we got home from work and compared it with the paint sample, the 2nd can was the right color and that the home improvement store messed up the first can, even though it said on the can it was the right color. So we were going to re-paint the entire room, AGAIN. Then the wheels in my head started spinning tonight and I said to myself "Self, you need to really go check the paint cans because there is no way they could be that different!" So I went out to the garage and looked at the first can we bought and it says Pine Needle Satin. That is exactly what we wanted. I look at the 2nd can we bought and it says Pine Needle Eggshell. Eggshell? What? I didn't want eggshell! That is the difference! The eggshell is darker and it has no shine to it. I like the satin and it looks a little lighter! So tomorrow we will go back to the home improvement store and take that paint back and have them give us the right finish! We will only have to touch up a few areas now! Whew!

Now that the Paint and painting dilemma are under control, I can get back to painting and moving more furniture out of the house! Next week my house will literally be in total chaos. The cats will not be happy for awhile. They will be locked up in our bedroom for up to 2 weeks! Yikes! Looks like we will have many sleepless nights.................

Oh, and I still haven't gotten the chance to unpack my horse trailer...................double sigh............

At least Fritzi is on the mend now, right?

I painted my den pine frost or something like that. Must be a similar color, very light. I love it. Amazing how much paint colors can vary and with the different types of paint too! When you're done, would you please come over and finish my house?

Abcesses this year have been a nightmare. Actually anything to do with horses feet/legs this year. Bugs, mud, stomping because of flies UGH!

Wow, that's a heck of an abscess! Glad it's popped now. We've had our share down here this year too. Wade popped one on a client horse yesterday, blew out through the front wall. Amazing...
Glad it's over though, and hope everything else falls into place for you :)

I'm glad Fritzy is doing better. I'd have nightmares too if Misty's leg turned into a tree stump.

Glad you don't have to redo all the painting. I love green; I bet it will be a beautiful guest room. Put the cats in there; green is supposed to be soothing. Do cat's see in color?

Wow! Bad, bad abscesses. I didn't know a leg could swell like that with one either, but you know, Moon had a mere scrape on his leg that was there for days and then all of the sudden it swelled up...HUGE. I'm still doctoring that darned little scratch. The swelling went down in his leg but the scratch is big and keeps wanting to grow proud flesh. This time of year is just NOT a good healing time. The heat, the insects.

It's a pain in the butt when the 2nd can of paint doesn't end up matching the first. I had that happen last year too. The guy at the store told me to always save the lid from the color I need matched. I guess those little stickers have all of the info they need-kind of paint and the exact mix ratio. It's just plain aggravating when you have to take the time to return something and then do the work over again. But the color sounds pretty. I like those kinds of greens. Very relaxing.

so glad fritzy is ok, i would not have known that either. banamine is great for soft tissue inflammation. was wondering why you didn't mention giving her any...there was a great article in practical horsemen about all the different pain meds and how each works. some i never heard of...glad your greens worked out! all of that labor, i cannot imagine how hard you are working. take care and stay healthy through all of these trial and tribulations! :-)

I painted our poech area a green that actually turned out a minty color that looks better than I thought it would, even when I asked for a sage colr. But turns out I like this color a lot and have had lots of compliments on it.

Boy am I glad Fritzy is better. even though I never like and abscess, at least you know how to deal with them and most of the time they are on their way as usual. PHEW. I have never see an abscess burst on the sole before. All pf Lilly's have popped out on the top of the hoof...which last time really weakened her hoof wall and started all kinds of trouble. In any case, I am so happy that she is going tombe just great. BTW, do you get compliments on her all the time? Because she is soooooooooo beautiful. Most people seem to really be taken with paints. Out here you don't see that many overall.
As much as I am glad about your mare, I am SAD about that painting chaos! I hate painting!!! So I sympathize with you GREATLY. I don't know if you were reading my blog when my husband and I were painting my stepdaughter's bedroom. She wanted green, and the color she chose was SO GROSS. Not sagey and pretty like Pine Needle. It was more like puke, and cheap puke at that. I went back to Home Depot and switched to a different green without even telling her! She is none the wiser!!! HAH! I wish you luck with the rest of your renovating!!!

I'm a bit late to the party on this post...

Too bad about Fritzy! I hope now that the abscess has blown, she will heal up and be back to normal.

I hear you on the painting - it starts out as a good idea, but it always seems to take more time than you think. I'm going to be repainting the main floor of our house in October... Note to self - get all of the paint mixed at the same time...

So glad to hear Fritzy is doing better. How scary! Sounds like you have WAY too much going on right now! Hope it all calms down soon....

I didn't know about the leg swelling with an abscess either; makes sense though.
Glad your girl is well on the mend and you've finished your painting (I like sage green, it's soothing ;o)

I like sage green. :) I'm glad you found the problem so that you don't have to repaint the whole room. I was told that when they mix paints that every can has the potential to be a slightly lighter/darker shade. I was told to always buy the paint all at one time. That may have changed though. I was told this years ago.

I'm relieved Fritzy is doing better. Sucks that she had to wait until the vet was due out to blow the abscess, but at least it was just an abscess. :)
