After working for the same company for 18 years, and the last 8 years working under a very difficult boss, I am finally feeling appreciated for the hard worker that I am.
You see, the last 8 years, my last boss never thanked me for a job well done. He never said good job, keep it up, way to go. As someone that worked in management, I know all to well what those kind of words mean to an employee. A simple thank you is enough, although I would always let my employees know when they were doing a really good job with a thank you and a small gift/treat. That way they would feel appreciated, not just for who they are, but for what they do. My last boss played the favoritism game, yep, he had his favorites, and everyone knew who they were. So even if you worked your butt off, and you weren't on his favorite list, well, it sucked to be you. I was one of those. I don't know how someone that actually does their job ends up on the shit list, but it does happen. Believe me, I know all too well. I was miserable. I wanted out so bad, but could not afford a pay cut. Even if I could afford a small pay cut, I had a very hard time with change, and losing all my benefits. Unfortunately, my company didn't survive, but it meant a way out for me. I totally believe it was a blessing in a way. I got to take time to find a job that I really wanted, which was going to be a big change in this girls life.
I have been working at the Arabian farm for a little over a month now. The barn manager/trainer, my boss, has only been back at work for 2 weeks since I have been there. But last week my boss approached me to tell me that I was doing a wonderful job. He really appreciated how hard I was working and that I was doing a good job. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Here I have only worked with my boss for 2 weeks, and he is already thanking me? I went 8 years without a thank you at my last job. Then the other day, my boss tells me that I have a really good work ethic. He asked why I didn't tell him that when I first interviewed with him. I told him that I did. He said that everyone says that, which is true. Since I was in the management business for so many years, I did the interviewing and hiring, and know first hand that 98 % of the people interviewed say they are good workers, when in reality only about 2 % are actually really good workers.
The day after the last compliment, my boss tells me again how wonderful of a job I am doing, and he would like to have a meeting with me the next day to see how I like the job, if I have any questions or concerns, and to talk about more money. Wow! Where did all this come from? I know I am a hard worker. I have always been this way. I am just in shock by how many times I have been thanked, praised, complimented at this job, and not just by the boss. The head groom told me on her second day back, that I am the best groom she has ever worked with, she said "seriously, I have worked with a lot of grooms, and you are the best!" Wow. I really took that as a compliment, she is an extremely hard worker, very dedicated to her job and very good at what she does. So to be complimented by her, feels really, really good.
This is the first time in a long time that I have finally felt appreciated for all the hard work I do. I believe that if we get paid to do a job, then we better do our job. A simple thank you is enough, and now I am finally getting to hear those 2 words that I have yearned to hear for so long. And it feels so good!

Congratulations! I hope I can follow in your footsteps and find a job where I am appreciated. Not only do I not get thanked, praised or given raises, but it seems that all any of my supervisors want to do is find fault with my work. I'm at a point where I've stopped trying and don't really care if I get fired. Like you, I'd consider it a blessing to be laid off, yet I wouldn't quit because I need the money and health insurance.
Glad to hear your getting along well with your new employer ;)
I am so proud of you! You deserve it! Always having worked for family owned businesses for 27 years, than going to a big corporate chain, there is a BIG differance. You felt that with your last job. I would give anything to be back at my last job. But I have to let it go, and make the best of it right now, for the same reasons. Medical, and it is a job. My manager does thank us for all our hard work. But the company does nothing. Not even a turkey at Christmas. You take pride in what you do, and your boss sees it. You will move up real fast. It always helps when you are doing something you LOVE!
HUGS!
You ROCK cowgirl!!! Anyone can see how dedicated you are!!! Glad you are finally getting some kudoo's!
I am so happy for you!! You are working at a physically demanding job and your bosses recognize that and appreciate your skill and your willingness to work. That they are willing to express their appreciation for your hard work tells me that you are working for a "class outfit".
I'm so glad you are loving your job and the people you work with. You deserve it!
Wow - that is really nice (and good for the pocketbook too) - it sounds like you may have landed in a good place!
Nice job!! And just think- those other two words "more money" are sure going to help too! ;)
That is such great news! Good for you - nice to have your hard work pay off!
How wonderful, I am so happy for you! Helps all those crappy years disappear into the past and makes it worth working hard!
Good for you! Everyone deserves some positive feedback for a job well done. Who knows that better than people that work with horses!
I can't help but think back to your original post about your upcoming life change. I'm so happy for you that this has been a change for the better. You had such a great attitude at that time. You are a good example of how good things CAN happen for good people...way to go Paint Girl! :)
Hurrah for you!!! So glad your effort is being noted and acknowledged! Also glad you found such a great place to work
Good for you to finally be acknowledged for your great work ethics and hard work. The best part of this for the boss, as you know, is the employee actually will work even harder for a great boss.
At the large Communication Company I work at, I am fortunate to have a wonderful supervisor, who is fair, and always looks at the good side of her employees.
I have worked under her several times over the years, and she helps me want to come to work every day!!
Kudos to you Paint Girl! Enjoy it. It was a long time coming, and you deserve it!

Well done, Paint Girl!!! Way to go! There are people who do great work and there are slackers. You are a worker and your boss knows it! How wonderful!
You're a success story and an inspiration. I do think people like you will never be without a job for long. Hard-workers are worth their weight in gold!! Congratulations!!
Congrats! Paint Girl....you're so humble....keep being you... even when you get to the top!!
Wow! That is so awesome! I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and it looks like your old company closing definately happened for a reason! It is so great that you are loving your job and feeling appreciated! I'm sure you deserve every bit of it!
Starting a new job is very hard. Sounds like you are doing VERY well and have a boss who appreciates your hard work. Doesn't it make going to work great?
Boy, I know what you are saying about your old job! When you work for a boss that never acknowledge you it makes you wonder why they exactly bother to keep you. It's hard to do your best when it doesn't seem to matter. I'm glad you are getting acknowledged for the good job you are doing. Congrats!
That is so AWESOME!!! YIPPEE!! I have said a million times this is the line of work you should definitely be in and obviously your boss see's that as well as your co-workers!!! I'm so proud for you and I am glad that you finally feel appreciated because you do deserve every bit of it!!!!!!!!
I'm so happy for you! Isn't it funny how a few words can really change things?
Wow, you're really tearing it up there Paint Girl! Congrats! I am so happy for you that you have found something so rewarding to do, and the fact that you're actually appreciated makes it a thousand times better!
Let's see....you get to work with horses, you like your job AND you are appreciated! That's gotta feel good at the end of the day.
And you so deserve to hear those words, "thank you". Like you, I'm a very hard worker too. And I also know what it's like to work somewhere where the boss is a nightmare - it really begins to diminish you as a person and you start to wonder, what's happening to my life??!
I'm so happy you found the perfect job, and congrats on all the compliments. You're worth it! :)
You go, girl! I'm so happy for you. I bet that makes going to work and working hard a whole lot more fun!
Woo hoo! Congrats, its always nice to feel appreciated :)
I try to say thanks to our employees when they do something a little extra, or to say "please" when I ask them for something.
My father-in-law on the other hand, so not his style. He comes from the mindset that you shouldn't be thanked for doing your job because your SUPPOSED to do your job. Which is true but really a little appreciation goes a long way to motivating people.
When Pie was sick and I worked every single day except for Sunday, and then only because Pie had those off when he had been at work, there were only two people that thanked me for all the extra work... and they were STAFF.
