It has been so long since I have gone clothes shopping!! Since being on unemployment for 4 months, I didn't have any money, actually I still don't have any money, but I do have credit. I try to only use my credit cards IF I have too, and I think my new job was a good enough reason. I seriously can't freeze all winter long! After working 45 hours this week, I was ready to hit the town to see what I could find.
We hit a couple sporting goods stores. I wasn't expecting to find much at the first stop. But I ended up finding more there then the 2nd store. Plus there was a really good sale. Lovin' those sales! I bought a lighter weight jacket, but should be warm enough for those cold but not too cold days. I also bought 2 Adida's zip-up sweatshirts that have a collar that comes to the top of my neck. But I am thinking of keeping those for "good" clothes. You see, I have clothes that I wear specifically for when I am not working with horses. Working with my own horses and now at a horse barn has made me realize how quickly clothes can be stained and ruined quickly, so I want to make sure that what I wear to work, it doesn't matter what happens to it. I don't have a lot of money to keep going out and replacing my "good" clothes. I just fell in love with the style and fit of these sweatshirts. So for now they will be good, and maybe someday, sent to work!
Another great sale item I found was another zip-up, but one that should help keep me warm under my coat. I loved how it fit, and I really wanted the pink, but they didn't have my size in pink. So I had to settle for the only color that came in a small, black. I think black works well in my profession, I don't have to worry about stains! I also bought snowboarding/skiing socks. They are specifically for cold, wet weather and should help keep my feet warm. As I was checking out, my OH noticed that they had hand and toe warmers by the checkout stand. I bought a 12 pack of hand warmers, and they didn't have packs of toe warmers, so I just bought 5 of them to give it a try. I haven't made a trip to Costco yet, but when I do, I will be sure to buy a case, or more!
I made a purchase that has nothing to do with horses, I really needed another pair of tennis shoes and I found a pair. I usually wear Skecher's, they are the most comfortable tennis shoes ever! But I really didn't like their Skecher collection, so I ended up with a pair of Converse. I have never worn this brand, so I hope they are comfy!! I really need comfort because of my knees. I did try them on, but I will have to wear them around the house to make sure they are right for me.
I tried on gloves, and even found a pair of water proof ones. But they just didn't feel quite right on my hands. Although, I did find a pair in a supplement that Equus magazine included in my last issue. I am not sure if they would work, but I am willing to give them a try. They are water proof, breathable winter work gloves. I would be interested to see if any of my readers have tried them, and if so, how they work and fit. Here is the link to the website:

At the second stop, I was looking for a heavier coat. They didn't have much of a selection, which shocked me. This place usually has quite a few. But there was one there that seemed to be perfect for what I need. It has a zip liner of fleece that is removable on the days I get too warm. It is water proof, breathable and was on sale. I also found another rain and wind resistant, it could be a lighter weight jacket, but I could also layer it under my coat, I am not too sure what to even call it. It doesn't have a hood, so I won't have any bulk under a coat. I also got another pair of snowboarding/skiing socks.
I also tried on about every pair of extra small gloves they had. I did find a pair that fit pretty good, but I changed my mind on purchasing them, I felt that I might not have a good grip when a horse tries to pull away from me. I now wish I would have bought them, to give them a try. They were only $14.99. Oh well, I can always go back and get them if I want.
All in all, it was a good shopping day. I still need a few more things, but I will get everything I need eventually. Gloves are a major focus right now. I spent more money than I thought I would, but I am sure it will be well worth it.
I would like to thank everyone for all their suggestions! It was very interesting to see what everyone wears in cold weather when working with horses!! I agree with everyone that mentioned gloves, this seems to be the biggest problem. I sure hope that there is a really good winter glove out there that I just haven't found, yet. One that will be slim fitting, warm, water proof and where I can still function around horses. I, of course, will keep everyone updated on how my new "work" clothes are working for me!!

Shopping is good! Sounds like you ought to be set for whatever kind of weather rolls your way.
I am glad to hear you got new warm gear. Brian and I just had a conversation about how we have clothes for regular life and "work/horse" clothes. Every time we have regular clothes on we have to do something and we get them dirty. I was thinking about posting about that. Last night I had to go to a wedding and I was all dressed up and I had to put the horses in because the barn is on the way to the wedding. I took off my heels and put on wellies and then I have this apron I wear over my clothes. It was so windy and wild and about to pour rain. Pie and Sovey were SO good and didn't get me muddy. I wish I could just wear horse clothes everywhere. It would be so much easier. BTW, I bought a few pairs of Converse at Target this year in different colors. I love them for around the house.
Sounds like a wonderfully productive day in the shopping arena.
Have you thought about second hand shops...sometimes the clothes in there are almost new and since you are wearing them for warmth and work, it may be an economical place to look.
Also if you do a long form on taxes, keep these tickets, you can deduct them for work clothes expense.
A little retail therapy is never a bad thing ! hope you stay warm now!
Sometimes it's good for the soul to go shopping especially when you find good deals!
love to shop! glad you found some warm things!
I was not thinking when I posted about the winter riding breeches. They are at Equestrian Collections and made by Mountain Horse. I love all their winter gear but it's mostly too spendy for me.
I think the glove thing is going to be your biggest issue. I can't even get a halter on wearing gloves!!! try a hard wear store...they have lots of work gloves...I've seen fleece lined nubucks before, they looked yummy but I don't have need for a pair. Glad to get some new warm things.
I agree that gloves will be key to your comfort this winter. There is nothing worse than cold, achy, fingers and dry, chapped hands.
I just bought myself a new riding coat and a run-around-town-in-the-wind-and-rain-coat too. Check out LL Bean (where I bought mine) as they usually have something to fit every budget and every body. :)
Well, at least you will be warmer then before your trip to town!
You have to take care of your self when working outside!!!
Sounds like you are set! :) Is the barn heated at all? I am getting a pair of converse, too! I need some new jean sneaks that I can wear with a thin sock for winter....all of mine (except my work-out shoes) are slip-ons for bare feet that are only good for spring-fall.
Can't wait to see your new gear, but not sure when I will be to your place with this darn dark at 5:00 thing now! :( Miss ya!
OH hooray for warm working gloves! It doesn't really get that cold down here to where I would need working cloves. Sad right? But those look nice and comfy! I hope you stay warm!!
Having to find extra small gloves is a challenge too. A lot of stores think they can just stock mediums and larges or one-size-fits-all. I have really small hands too.
I always try to keep horse stuff separate from "good" stuff, but it seems like my BEST stuff is always horse stuff! Does that make sense? LOL!
The hand and foot warmers are awesome. I've used the hand warmers in my boots when I've been out of the foot warmers. They tuck in under my toes. Works wonders!
Sounds like you got some good stuff! You should definitely stay warm now:)
When I have the right clothes on for a particular task or event, I have a much better attitude! Sounds like you got some AWSUM stuff! I can't wait to hear the Paint Girl Consumer Reports, Horsewear Edition!
I know what you mean about multiple wardrobes!! I've got my horse wardrobe, my work one, my workout one, my bumming around home one, etc. It makes laundry day a bear! =)
I am usually cold, so I am always bundling up even though it rarely gets below 60 here. I love finding good deals! Makes shopping so much more fun.
Ok Is it just me? I wanna see pictures? lol Congratulations on you new job. Yes I too haven't shopped for clothes in a while:( I am scraggly he he. Too bad we don't have a money tree, it would sure make life more fun!
I wear a lot of black--love it. My only complaint is the amount of hair that gets on it, or the smudges of dirt--but hey, it's worth it!
I'll be interested in watching what you find for gloves. I really have to get a new pair. Right now I'm doubling up. I just haven't found a another pair I really like.
Sounds like you had some fun and made some useful purchases, too. Black is great, but you'll probably find that you'll be handling grey and white horses on the days you're wearing it. lol!
I don't know about Converse, but I wear New Balance and have for the past 10 years and love 'em. Very comfy and tough shoes.
Those gloves from the link are cool! Pricey, though. I was laughing at how they tried to cover ALL the bases with the "MICRO FLEECE BROW WIPE THUMB". lol!
Let us know if you find the perfect gloves to keep you warm AND handle horses all day. :)

Awesome!!! I am so glad you found some good warm things for work!!! Maybe you'd better go back and get those gloves!! Your hands seem to delicate to not have them!!
