A couple months ago I bought a blanket for Chance, but when Chance came home, I realized it was going to be too small. So I exchanged it. Well, once I was able to get her gentled enough to measure her, she measured 56" and the blanket I bought was a 54". So a couple weeks ago I had returned that blanket. Now that it is extremely cold, I ran all over the place to find a blanket in her size. I stopped at 3 places, and everyone was out of small blankets. The last place I stopped at had one left. It isn't the color I would typically buy for her, but it will work. It is a Weatherbeeta Freestyle. The sales girl said all they had was a 57" and that the brand runs a little big. So I just bought it. If it didn't fit, I could return it.
As soon as I got home, I ran out to catch Chance. The last couple days I have been taking her halter and lead and catching her by putting her halter over the halter she has been wearing. She has been doing really good with that. This weekend her green halter will be coming off for good. Let's just hope that she doesn't get any crazy ideas, and decide that she doesn't want to be caught, after I remove her halter permanently!!
I was hoping that Chance would accept the blanket. I held it up to her, she was very curious about it. I put it next to her body. She just sniffed it. I then put it on her back while still holding onto it. She walked around me a couple times then stopped, this is when I removed it. I put it back on her back, she moved again a couple circles then stopped. I removed it again. I then opened up the blanket and put it on her like you would normally put a blanket on a horse. She moved a little, then stopped. She stood completely still while I buckled all the straps. She didn't care at all. I guess all that desensitizing with the towel really paid off!!! I was wondering what she would do when I let her go. She didn't care at all. She just sniffed the front of it and went on her merry way!
I know she looks funny with 2 halters on. This is how I have been catching her, I walk up to her, put my right arm over her neck while holding the crown piece of the halter, my left hand is holding the nose piece, then I can hold her if she tries to move off, which she hasn't yet, and I can slide the nose piece over her nose, and since my right arm is already over her neck and I am holding the crown piece, I can just pull the crown over the top of her head and buckle it. She is doing so well, that her green halter will be coming off soon!!

Chance wasn't concerned at all with her new blanket. She checked it out a couple times and that was it. Oh, and it fits!! I am very happy about that!

Fritzy and Brandy watched every bit of it. They were awfully curious in what I was doing to that silly Mustang!

Chance was more interested in her poo, than some wierd thing on her back!

This here is frozen mud. It isn't any fun to walk on!! Seriously!!

Chance being very curious, as usual, she grabbed my green bag and picked it up off the ground. She almost took off running with it!!

It doesn't get any cuter than this, does it?

Chance has been so sweet this weekend. She did really good. I am so proud of my little Mustang!! I love her more and more everyday, is that even possible?

Very cute! Sensible (and trained) baby horse!
Hehe she looks so cute in her blanket.
Smart baby! She is coming along so well for you . Great work! Watch your bum knee on the frozen mud ! that looks like pretty unsure footing
That's great that she accepted the blanket so easily. I don't like slogging around in the mud, but I
d probably sprain my ankles trying to walk on that frozen, uneven ground.
They grow so fast, don't they? Glad it was a non-issue for her. A few years ago, I went to put a blanket on the mare we have had the longest. We don't normally blanket but I was camping about 5 hours from home and a freak storm moved in. The mare hadn't got her winter coat in yet and was visibly shaking. I pulled out a blanket and went to put it on her. She freaked! I realized she had never worn one. And that day was not going to be the exception. I ended up loading her into the trailer to help her warm up. After she had dried off some and the winds died down, I introduced her to the blanket again & she was fine.
I put one on the low horse on the totem pole last year as she is always being run out of the barn. It was a red blanket & I may as well have put a target on her back! Not only did they run her out of the barn, but they wanted to kill her with the blanket on! LOL!
She looks really cozy in that blankie! I like the blue on her. I am glad she took it so well. And don't worry about the two halter thing- I GET IT! :) My hard to catch stinker still wears two halters from time to time!!
"I love her more and more everyday, is that even possible?"
Of course it is! I feel that way about my mare, Stylin. Good job with Chance!
She's so darned cute!
She's looking good! Oh and those blankets are awesome (I have a couple)
Wow, you did a great job preparing her. And I'm with Pony Girl, I think blue is her color.
awwww-what an adorable baby she is!! i love her in tbat cozy blankie!! what a smart little monkey she is! you are doing a great job with her!
i blanketed my oldest girl tonight (mariah) and i think she was pleased. it's -7 and dropping. i tried to blanket star (18) but she acted afraid of it so we'll work on that tomorrow. everyone got a double ration of hay and i closed up the barn-it's 15 degrees warmer in there already!
stay warm and i'm glad the rains stopped for a bit!

ahh, what a beautiful baby in her blanket!
Isn't it amazing how fast these little ones grow?! I'm having trouble coming to terms with my baby turning 2, seems like just yesterday I was cuddling a newborn baby and now he's as big as my 4 year old! You're doing a great job with Chance and she looks great! I wish it would get cold enough here for our mud to freeze - right now it's snow on top of mud and it's a mess!!
Oh, Paint Girl!!! Your little Chance is so cute in her blanket. And what a good girl!! You can be very proud of taking your time and doing it all right so that she is not scared. You will have a horse that totally trusts you and will be willing for you. That is worth so much. Don't ever let anyone or anything rush her. She is so wonderful!
That is horrible about your cold temperatures. I hate winter. We are cold here too, but not that cold...not yet. Ugh.
She is a cutie, Gotto love a good fit!
Good girl Chance! It's obvious she trusts you -- so no need to worry about that strange thing on her back.
I had to get Piper a new blanket this year ~ outgrew her baby blanket. :(
Awwww she is so sweet! And so cute in her blanket too. You are doing such a wonderful job with her. She is going to be a great horse!
She's a keeper!!! Have you started a baby horse book for her yet?!
so darn cute!!!!
Awww, J. I'm so proud of all the work you've done with her! That is too darn cute! I'm so glad she's coming along so well!
Oh she did great!! And yes she does look so cute in her blanket!!! I totally understand the halter business!! It is a great training tool! We can't ever do that around here as there is to many of them together and to much for them to get caught on! I did leave one on a mare that had just foaled a couple years ago and it was one of those safety release ones...Well she got that safety clip on a wire and pulled down the whole fencing!!
Aww So cute! cance looks so good in her new blanket! I am sure it will not stay that clean for long :)
What a cutie!!
Awwww...al your hardwork has paid off. She trusts you! Now just trust her and remove the halter and let her show you what a good girl she is.
And you know that even if you have some trouble with haltering, she can't go far.
When I get ready to halter Baby Doll, I always wrap the lead rope around her neck so she knows that she is caught. I don't want to put my arm over the top of her neck because she is taller than me and can pull back and flip me right over.
Maybe you can do the same thing with Chance, too. Teach er about the lead rope around her neck meaning that she is caught and she must stand still.
She sure looks pretty in her new blankie. I don't blanket my mare until we get wet snow or cold rain, or when the wind is very gusty and temps are down in the teens.
Baby Doll has 24/7 access to her stall in the barn along with trees for windbreaks, and she eats all day and night to stay warm.
And along with her thick fur she is stays very cozy.
That said, I ure do love how cozy and cute horses look when they wear clothes. heheh!

She is just so sweet looking!!! And your frozen mud-pasture looks a lot like mine!! It is tough to walk on....We have 3 degrees here in Northwest Indiana today, and a wind chill factor of -20! It must be January!
Just goes to show what an awesome job you're doing with her! Congrats
Chance is such a good girl!!! All you work with her is soooo evident! You go cowgirl!!!
She is so cute! After the holidays are over your mom and I are going to have to come and see her!!
She is such a good girl! Just look at her with her blanket one! She is too cute!! I chuckled at her sniffing her poo!! ha ha She really is a good baby!! She is going to be a great horse!
I have one weanling that is just like Chance, nothing really fazes her. Then the other one!! She is a freak!! ha ha ha!!
Chance looks so cute in her blanket!
Hey! I love the blue blanket--I think the color looks really good on her, even though I have a feeling she would look grrreat in a pink blanket too!!! Do you think Chance will have feet that will be able to be shoeless??
I know exactly how those mud divets can feel under your feet! You could twist and ankle if you are not careful! We are really cold here too, if that makes you feel any better! Since we have a new puppy that must go outside every hour or so, this cold weather is not making me very happy! But at least the snow can be snow beautiful it takes my breath away sometimes.
Fun to hear you so smitten. Lucky horses with those blankets. Ours aren't near as lucky (nor our weather quite as cold!)
