I hated the hard ground. It became so compact and I just cringed when I loped my horses on it. But I had to ride them. I couldn't afford sand. We checked into sand prices, and it was just way too expensive. 3 years later....................
This is what I had been anticipating about for so long and it was finally here! The first delivery of sand!

My OH went out and talked to the driver to discuss the options of how he was going to drive back to the arena. We have 5 acres, shaped like a rectangle. My arena sits way in the back of that rectangle. We have a 16 foot opening in between the horse pasture's. We have had dump trucks back there before, but they have always had to back in. The driver walked out to the arena and felt he could drive in forward and still have enough room to dump sand and turn around and drive out. He had a transfer, which meant he could dump one truck into the arena, then go back out to our street and put the transfer in the dump and go back to the arena to dump another load. This prevents excessive trips out here from where the sand and gravel pit is. Since we were going to have 3 deliveries with 3 transfers, that works out to 6 dump truck loads of sand. 72 yards.
I wasn't the only one anticipating the sand delivery. Chance was checking out the big rig pulling up to her pasture. She wasn't that scared. Once he drove by her pasture, she would run a little, then come to the upper part of her pasture to see what was going on. Such a curious little thing she is.

The driver was able to spread as he dumped. It wasn't going to be perfect, but at least the 6 loads weren't going to be in big piles all over. That would make the job easier for us and our neighbor, who would be spreading the sand out as evenly as he could for us.

A beautiful sight to see.............

At this point, we still had another 2 loads to be dumped. This is when they had to back up to the arena.

Later that evening, I went over to my neighbors and asked if he could come over with his tractor sometime that week and spread sand. We had already talked to him about it previously and he said he would be over in a couple days.

Neighbor J spent hours in the arena. He was able to spread most of it, except for the edges, which my OH did by hand while I was out of town last weekend.

Just in time for me to take that cute Mustang filly of mine out and get some work done, in the new sand!

I still haven't had a chance to ride in it yet. I was out of town for a family reunion last weekend. But believe me, I will be out there this week! After 3 years, I can't wait any longer!

AHHHH HOW exciting!!! I am SO jealous LOL!!! I cannot wait to hear how much of a difference this makes for you, it will be so fantastic!!
Congrats girl! You deserve it!
That is very exciting! However, I think Chance has a different idea — like maybe that's a new place to roll.
Congratulations! Enjoy.
That is so great! Having some footing there will make such a huge difference for you!
Nice! I've been wanting to put sand down in my round pen for quite some time now. I may just go ahead and do it. At least, that'll give me a little area with solid footing for working the horses in bad weather.
oh, and isn't it crazy how Chance and Yalla! ARE so similar in color! Does Chance have a dorsal stripe too? It seems that the main difference is that Chance has red tones and Yalla! has gold tones. When I click back and forth between them it's amazing!
It looks sooo good! And based on how far her hooves are sinking in, not too deep either!
Just don't make the mistake we made: Do not feed hay in there! You would be surprised how quickly that hay seed will take root.
Before we put up our round pen, our other fencing, and our air conditioning unit, the truck drivers were able to spread the sand for us like that. It made it so much easier. However, now the lane is too narrow and the turn from one gate through another too tight, so they just have to dump it in piles while we spread it with wheelbarrows.
Woo hoo! How exciting! Have fun!
Oh I'm so super jealous! It looks lovely.
Looks wonderful , I am sure you will enjoy it
You are really going to enjoy that.
Good to see I am not the only person who thinks it's perfectly acceptable to wear boots with shorts-LOL. If I did not do that, my legs would never see the light of day-hahahaha
I love it! I remember when we finally got sand in our arena when we were kids. Us horse people are an easy lot to please, eh?? LOL!!!
I love Chance's full tail. She really is quite pretty..... : )
I could have written that exact same story--minus the happy ending with sand!! My happy ending will come someday--probably in 3 years! lol. Enjoy!!
I need more sand! I've been waiting 5 years haha! HAVE FUN! STAY SAVVY!

Fabulous! it looks great! We are fortunate to have sand everywhere, thanks to Lake Michigan and the Ice Age...You (and your horses) are going to love it!!
Fantastyk Voyager~ Yes, Chance has a dorsal stripe! Like I said, our filly's are basically twins!! I can't wait til they grow up!
BEC~ Ha Ha! You crack me up! It was so hot that day, I think it was in the 90's and there was NO WAY I was going to wear jeans!! I could care less what I look like, I was much cooler that way! LOL!
It looks great! We want to build an out door ring with sand as well, but it's out of our price range at the moment. Hopefully soon...
If I was a horse, first thing I'd think is, "Thanks for the great new place to play and roll around!" Looks so cushy and smooth.
And look at you, so cute, in your cowgirl boots, and short-shorts and tanktop. You look like a dark-haired Daisy Duke! lol!
Congrats!

I love the pic of Chance watching the big truck move in! :) The sand is so nice...it was great to see Fritz move out so well in it. I've only longed MB once in it but he didn't look as off in the hind as he does on the hard ground! Funny how it can make such a difference. Sometimes things are worth the wait. You are lucky to have the arena and sand. Many people have nothing but a pasture to ride in! It might take another 15 years to get your barn....all in good time.
Very cool!!! That's going to be sooooo nice to ride in.
Looks nice! My horses are finally getting stalls. Hope you can keep the weeds out of it!
Gosh that's a BEE-U-TIFUL sight!!! Green with envy!
