The last regional show of the year was pretty crazy. We ended up having a total of 34 horses at the show. That is a lot of horses. Plus summer decided to make it's first real appearance of the year and the temps hit 95+ degrees! Oh how I hate the humidity in this state! I have never sweated so much in my life, and my back and shoulders hadn't quite healed from that nasty sunburn, so I had a nasty heat rash on my shoulders and upper back. I have never had problems with the sun or heat. I do not have sensitive skin! But apparently my body couldn't handle the sun and heat this time.
We had a really good show. Almost all of our horses made Top 5's and tons of Grands and Reserves.
Here I am leading a horse back to the barn after a class. Photo courtesy of Pony Girl.

My sister was able to stop in one day. She hung out and watched classes one afternoon and evening. She also went and bought me lunch/dinner, I think that was the day I didn't get to eat until 5:00 p.m. It was so busy.
I also got to meet Mikael from Rising Rainbow Arabians. She stopped in to say hi on Saturday. I wish I could have talked to her more, but we were just starting to pack up what we wouldn't need that night, then we had around 10 more horses showing. It was great getting to meet her, and I am sure we will meet again and hopefully we will get a chance to talk a lot more!

I was supposed to go to the show grounds on Sunday to finish packing, but we had so much packed on Saturday evening, that I was told to just stay home. On Saturday night, we did haul all the horses home that were left at the show grounds. So we hauled them home at 11:30 p.m. I think I got home around 12:30 in the morning. I went to bed after I ate something and I must have turned my alarm off, because I didn't wake up until 12:30 in the afternoon. I guess that is what happens when you only get 12 hours of sleep in 4 days and work 16-18 hours a day. Wow. I was one tired girl!
My OH had went to pick up a huge load of local grass hay on Saturday evening, so we went to get more on Sunday afternoon. It is really nice hay, the bales are huge for local grass and we couldn't be happier. We have 200 bales sitting in storage right now. That is a huge relief! We have been paying $14.00 a bale for grass hay that is hauled in from across the state. We paid $7.00 a bale for the local hay over the weekend. This local hay is equivalent to the $14.00 hay. But a much better price. I just wish we had more hay storage, because we would buy more right now if we could. But we will continue to buy it throughout the summer, so hopefully we will have enough to get us through the winter.
I don't have to go back to work until Friday. It will be nice having a few days off. I haven't had many of those, so I kinda forgot what they are like. I am hoping to get a trail ride in this week too! I also have some exciting news, well, it is very exciting to me anyways!! My arena has been in place for around 3 years now, and I have never been able to afford to get any footing in it. What I have in there now is just very hard, compact dirt. I hate it. I am always so worried that one of my horses will injure themselves. Even dragging it doesn't loosen it at all. It is just too compact. So my OH called around to check on sand prices, and WOW! Sand is so expensive!! There was no way that I was going to get footing in my arena at the price of $24.00 a yard. It would have cost me over $1600.00 to put sand in my arena! Then the next day, my OH called me to say he found a deal on sand. He could get it to me delivered for the entire arena for only $580.00. Now that is what I call a screaming deal! So I can afford to get footing in my whole arena, finally! They are delivering it first thing tomorrow morning! Our neighbor is going to bring his tractor over and spread it for us. I should be riding in my new footing this weekend! Yeah!
I feel like I am so behind on everything since I haven't been home much in the last month and a half. It will feel really good to catch up on what needs to be done around here and hopefully I can get some "me" time too!

Good to see you back. I bet your excited for the arena footing! How fun!
Wow that is a huge group of horse to show. Glad you got through it OK . And yay for your sweet sister taking you food , and giving us a few pics to see what you have been up to. Enjoy your time off and your fancy new arena footing
Glad you'll get a LITTLE down time (finally). But...
WHERE THE HECK did you find cheap sand? Share, please!
Also, forgive my ignorant country ways, but what is on the front feet of that horse in the photo? I can't tell from the picture.
Cooler temps today and tonight, I hope you're enjoying them as much as we are.
Yikes.....35+ horses to show, 12 hours of sleep in 4 days and working 16-18 hours a day, and then hauling horses in the middle of the night? Egads, girl...no wonder you have been so tired. That's a crazy schedule for sure!
It's great to read that you'll be having some free time soon, though. I bet it's so frustrating not being able to spend more time at home with your OH and all your critters.
I think even $580 for sand is too much. Around here, we've got sand all over the place. We live in the desert. Sand is basically free. lol!
How nice it will be to have your arena soft and cushy for your horses, though. Plus it will probably help with controlling the mud after it rains, too.

AareneX~ The horse I am leading is an english (saddleseat) horse, and those are shoes with big pads. Since the shoes/pads are so big, the shoer has to put "bands" on to keep the shoes on the hoof. This horse belongs to a client and it's the only horse in our barn with shoes that big!
Lisa~ I would love to live in the desert and get free sand!! Unfortunately we don't have any sand around here, just a lot of dirt and mud. $580 is extremely cheap to get sand around here. And yes, sand drains so well, I shouldn't have any mud issues or mud puddles in my arena anymore! Yeah!!
AareneX~ Oops, forgot to answer one of your questions, unfortunately I can't tell you my sand source, it is even being kept a secret from me! From what I am told, someone is doing us a huge favor!
I can imagine the heat was bad inside those barns. I noticed when we came in to find you that it was really humid in there and Saturday was the coolest day of the week if I remember correctly. That humidity sure didn't help anything.
I can't believe you worked on hay Sunday afternoon. Girl! Are you nuts? After the week you put in it's amazing you got out of bed at all, let alone bucked hay in the afternoon.
It's pretty darn cool you're getting footing for your arena. I hope you get some riding time on these days off.
Next year I hope to do much more showing so maybe we'll get more time to chat then. I'm already qualified for this region so I'll probably show even though I'm not crazy about that facility.
Nice to hear from you again and glad you have made it thru the thickest of the show season. You know, there have been times when I thought about what a cool job you have, but hell, I don't have the stamina!
Bet your babies are happy you're home!
Congrats on the sandy arena.
Glad to hear that you are home and have a couple of days off! Hope you get a chance to rest and take care of things around home.
Good to hear that your barn did so well! That must be exciting and encouraging.... But 34 horses? Wow - what a lot of work and commitment that is!
Great news about the sand footing!
I am happy you are getting some time to LIVE and SLEEP and be with your horses! That is a fabulous photo that Pony Girl took of you. Have fun with your new footing. Good news all around!
Aww heat rash! This summer was my first brush with that awful rash too, and I had the same problem, and sunburn followed by extreme heat. Make sure you take good care of the affected area for the rest of the summer!
Yay for arena footing! After spending over a year without an arena, and no good footing anywhere, I was so happy to get an arena to use!
Thanks to Pony Girl for the pictures; what a beautiful horse!!
I can't believe 35 horses were at that show (from your barn)!! That's just unbelievable, craziness!!
Congrats on having these next couple days off, I bet you totally need this break! I hope you get lots of time in the saddle on your own pretty ponies.
We're glad to have you back and that you can get a little rest and give some attention to your own equine family.
I get the same rash. So does one of our cousins, so it must run in the family! :) Can't wait to see the sand! It was fun to watch the show...wish I had taken more pictures, but inside ones didn't turn out well. Had to use my other lens and even then, would have had to stand on the rail perhaps or use a flash and I always worry about that at a show, although I'm sure those horses don't mind w/everyone screaming all the time! ;)
Enjoy your mini-vacation!
You are so lucky to be able to work with those beautiful horses!
And how cool to meet a fellow blogger....
That is awesome that you are finally getting sand/footing for your arena! I am sure that you will put it to good use. : )
PS-Tell Pony Girl "hi" and that we all miss her. : )
Welcome home! Glad to hear you'll get to spend some much needed time with your OH, dogs, cats, goats, bbq frog and horses. Did I forget anyone?! That was a great picture of you and the winning horse from the last show. Loved the colors in the picture. Yes, I am the cousin who gets those heat rashes and let me tell you, they suck. So far, so good this summer, however. Someone suggested I try using baby Butt paste, but I haven't quite had the chance to try it. Perhaps you can try it and let me know how it works for you?! Looking forward to seeing pictures of your arena with the new sand.
Glad you survived! I think it's so cool to meet a fellow horse blogger in person, awesome!
What a GREAT deal on sand. Congrats!! I love the feeling of putting up hay, too--we haven't done it yet.
Enjoy the off-season!!!
Whew! Another horse show has come and gone! Now you have another notch in your belt, a few battle scars to show for it, and some yummy trail rides ahead with your own horses and some comfy footing in your arena! It is looking pretty darn good for you right now, Paint Girrrrl! Thank goodness. You deserve it.
Isn't show season fun? ;) Those are some very fun "work pics"! WAY more fun then my work pics would be! lol I know I was so happy to have show season done with so I could just relax and be home for a while and we didn't go to nearly as many shows, (or shows that lasted as long!) as you did. I'm such a home body, it's so hard to be gone weekend after weekend.
And SOOOO WAY exciting about the sand! WOHOOOOO!!!! I've been staring at our dirt "arena-to-be" for entirely too long. There are always other places for $$ to go though. Why is sand so blasted expensive?! And WHERE DID YOU FIND IT SO CHEAP????
