I Finally Got My OWN Horse Time!

I can't believe I am back on my own horse again! After my sand was delivered, my sister and I tacked up our horses and rode through the neighborhood. I usually don't lunge Brandy when she has been ridden consistently, but since she hadn't been ridden in quite some time, I took her over to my "old" arena and lunged her. I couldn't use my arena since it had sand and it hadn't been spread yet. I am glad I lunged her. She wasn't totally crazy, but she sure had some go in her!

This horse is my neighbors, who lives across the street from me. I have posted pictures of her before. Magic is a 3/4 Percheron, if I am remembering correctly. I haven't seen her owner ride her yet and she has had her for a few years. She just had to have her 35 year old Arabian put down about a month ago, and also had to put down her other older Arab and Standardbred last year. Tough times.

She bought Magic for a cart horse, but haven't seen her doing that either. So it looks like Magic is basically a pasture pet. It is so amazing how big they get and she is absolutely beautiful!

We weren't gone too long, we only rode one loop through the neighborhood. But it was a good, calm and relaxing ride. We knew that we were going on a trail ride the next day and I just could not wait!

When we got back to my house, I told my sister I wanted to ride the horses back out to the arena. I wanted them to get a good look at the new sand! Here is a teaser of the sand. I will be doing a sand post as soon as my neighbor gets it all spread out and leveled. Thank goodness for awesome neighbors! Even though the horses had front row seats for the sand delivery, they were still a little cautious about approaching the arena. Brandy was eyeballing it, then it was no big deal and I rode her through it.

Early this morning, my OH and I went and put the arena panels back up so our neighbor would know how far to spread the sand. I then cleaned out my horse trailer, added more shavings, hooked the trailer up to the truck and waited for my sister to arrive. I just wanted to get on the trails!

It was a beautiful day, the sun was out and it was in the upper 70's. Perfect riding weather! We headed out in the direction of the creek first. There are two ways to start out, and for some reason I like to go through the creek first.

I have never followed the creek bed before, not sure why. I actually just thought of it when I downloaded this picture. I might have to do that some day.

After you ride through the creek and head up the trail, my sister missed the trail on the left. But if you keep going, there is another trail that you can take. Well, since I usually take the first trail and haven't been past that trail in a long time, I didn't realize that most of the bank had washed out, which left a very narrow trail and a cliff that dropped straight down on the right. I have a very INTENSE fear of heights. I literally panic. Not a good situation, especially being on a horse that can spook at any given moment. When I saw the drop off, I freaked out. Brandy was eyeballing that drop off and I swear I could feel her body moving in that direction. There is absolutely no room for error here. I told my sister she better hurry and get on that other trail before I had a panic attack. Once we turned up the trail, I still felt the fear. I cannot handle heights at all. Heights is one thing I absolutely do not feel comfortable with, whether I am on a horse or not. I just can't do it. I told my sister that we will not miss that first trail again, EVER!

We rode the short loop, which takes you to the bathrooms, and then headed back to the trailer. It was about a 2 1/2 hour ride. It was wonderful, except for the drop off part! It felt so good being on the back of my OWN horse and just enjoying a beautiful day!

Great pix! Well I guess you are on the back of your OWN horse rather than walking next to SOMEONE else's horse constantly, as you do at work, LOL! :) You and heights...I could hear the panic in your voice. Did you get that way when you rode in the desert years ago or is this a more recent fear? We'd better keep you away from those ledges!! Especially since your little mare tends to gravitate towards them! ;) I hope the sand-spreading went well!!

Can't wait to see the sand pix. I've thought often of doing that to my round pen, but Mr. Fry looks at me like I'm nuts because there's already sand there. He doesn't understand the deep fluff concept. That and to him, since I don't ride in the RP all the time, it would be a waste. Guys, especially non-horse guys...sheez!

Great pix! I'm so glad you and your sis (hi PonyGirl!! Smooches to that cute appy boy of yours!) got out for a couple of rides. You must be so happy!

Glad the sand arrived - that will help your arena so much...

Looks like it was fun, minus the scary drop off!

Looking forward to seeing pictures of the arena. Your own sand box!

Oh yeah, a nice relaxing trail ride -- free therapy! (well, you could have done without that drop off part, I suppose!) I wish we had a little creek to ride through..any water would be nice!

I'm glad you both had a good trail ride. It feels good when you can ride your own horse, doesn't it?

It's great to hear that you two were out hittin' the trails again. Too bad about the heights thing, but I'm glad you made it through alright. Congrats on the arena sand, it looks lovely ;).

The longest trail loop on the trail I take is very narrow, very unstable, and along the side of a cliff. After Bombay and I slipped over the edge and needed my husband to pull us up, I won't ride there alone. The horses still refuse to enter the most heavily wooded area too. I'd like to see what's up there, but I think they smell other animals or something, and always turn and run in the opposite direction when I try to push them through there.

I'll bet your horses are enjoying you spending more time with them too.

I don't like heights either, and I think it's because I've heard stories of horses going down the cliff. So, without knowing it, I always lean away--which, I was told by my friend--actually makes your horse LEAN IN to balance against you. So, she has me lift my free arm up in the air--then do it with the other side--so that I'm sitting straight up--it pulls my horse back on the trail right, too. Looks like a beautiful ride!!

I'm with you on the heights! Thanks for the My Boy fix, too.

The trail that scared you is dangerously undercut and unstable! I've marked it closed with ribbons several times in the past for safety reasons, but somebody continues to pull down the ribbons. Last time I saw my shredded orange "caution" ribbons tossed off into the bushes. Sigh.

Stay safe, avoid that trail.

Pony Girl~ I have always been scared of heights, as long as there is a gradual slope down, I am not as fearful, but when it is a straight down drop off, can't handle it. Remember last summer when we took our horses to mom's, and rode in the forest? We ended up on that trail that had a cliff straight down on the right, not just once, but twice? I thought I was going to have an anxiety attack then!

AareneX~ I can't believe people keep taking your ribbons down! That is a dangerous spot and someone could get seriously hurt, if not killed. Some people like to live on the "edge"! Not me! Not like that anyways!

Glad you had such a wonderful ride! We rode two days this week. Had a little misshap with Dusty no wanting to go through a big muddy mess. Will tell you the detail later! LOVE you!

OH and I was just thinking of your fear of heights and wondering if you're also afraid of riding because of sitting up high on a horse.
One of the reasons I'm less fearful now to ride is that I'm riding shorter horses. I, too have a fear of heights, and even now try not to look down when on a horse's back. gah!

Lisa~ My fear of heights doesn't hit an extreme until I get over the 6 foot mark, so if I climb up a 6 foot ladder I am okay, but any higher, nope, the fear kicks in. The weird thing is that I can ride a horse and be totally fine, but when I see a drop off like a cliff, on a horse or on foot, I lose it. I've walked across a train trestle with a river running below, and I seriously freaked out. It was so high up and I felt like I was going to fall through to the river. When I go up into the hay loft at work (it's over the 6 foot height) I totally panic. Thank goodness I don't have to go up there much! It just seems to be when I hit that certain level, whether I am on a horse or not. I hate it, and wish I didn't have that fear!

That is just SO awesome that you've finally got the sand for your arena!!! That is going to make riding and working them in there so much easier on them!!

Sounds like you all had a great ride! Minus the heights thing! Glad you got out of there quick!!

Sounds like a great ride (minus the drop-off). Finally you get your much needed horse/trail time! That is what it is all about!

This must have felt so wonderful. Were you hugging yourself? I'm so glad you got to ride your own horses, and get out and do something for you! YeeeHaw!!!

Awwww...I am so happy that you were/have been able to enjoy your own horses and the company of your sister. : )

I miss being able to just hop on and go. With school being out, I have to find a baby sitter first, and a simple ride turns into a giant production...lol!!!

And, I know what you mean about dangerous trails. I usually just hop off and walk my horse through particularly nasty parts...like steep washouts.....

Here's to more rides this summer!!! : )
