I have been waiting for my farrier appointment to find out what he has to say about Brandy's lameness. That appointment was yesterday. My farrier, K, had me trot Brandy for him and turn her in tighter circles so he could check out the lameness. He pulled out his hoof tester and sure enough, she was extremely sensitive to the tester on the inside of the crevice area of her hoof. There was also a bruise close to the sensitive area. My farrier says he is pretty sure she has a very deep abscess. He went ahead and put shoes on her, but he said they could make her even more lame. But after her shoes were on she didn't seem anymore lame then she was. I am back to soaking her hoof for an abscess. I sure hope this is what it is.
I didn't realize abscesses could take this long to burst. And we will find out soon, hopefully, if that is really what it is. I am hoping that is all that is wrong. If not I will have the vet out to examine her hoof (it's definitely in her hoof).
When I went out to feed tonight, I noticed Brandy has hives. She has broken out in hives once before. I am trying to figure out what I did different with her. We have been feeding the same hay for months, so I am pretty sure it isn't a reaction to something in the hay. The only thing I did that was different was use a different kind of fly spray on her yesterday before my farrier came out. I had bought a different brand then what I usually use because it was cheaper, but not the really cheap stuff. I don't use the really cheap stuff because I don't think it works. Anyways, I have been using the new brand on Chance and she is fine with it. Yesterday was the first day I had sprayed Brandy with the new brand and she now has hives. So I think that is what it is. The brand I have used for years is Absorbine UltraShield EX. The new brand I bought is Pyranha. So I won't be using the Pyranha on Brandy again. I will go back to the Absorbine. Fritzy and Chance are fine with Pyranha. I guess my little Arab mare is more sensitive then I thought!
I turned the horses out yesterday for some green grass! I need to do that more often. The grass is still growing like crazy and very green due to all the rain we continue to have. It seriously won't stop. Summer has not started and I really think we will just skip summer all together. Although I do feel for you all in the extreme high temperature's right now..............
I would just be happy for the temperature gauge to hit the 70 degree mark at this point, and maybe a rainless cloud, or two!

If we could average out our temperatures - upper 90s - with yours, we'd both be about right! Good that it seems just to be an abscess, even if a slow maturing one. Sometimes they seem to take forever.
Oh no, your temps aren't even in the 70s? I have to admit that that would really get me feeling blue, especially after waiting through winter. I hope you get some nice warm, sunshiny days very very soon!
Poor Brandy! I hope that it is an abscess too and that it bursts asap.
Poor Brandy-lame and allergic. Pyrahna is pretty strong stuff. I reserve it's use for August when the flies are really bad, but have never had a horse have an allergic reaction (luckily).
I really feel for you not even having 70+ degree weather. Probably wouldn't be so bad if it would quit raining. Our temps are all over the place. Hot, cool...lots of storms. Strange year for sure.
PG--I'm with you--I don't think summer's coming this year.
I know it does a take a while for abscesses sometimes. I've had to wait a while before, too. Not fun and it feels like a guessing game. So much of the health of horses is a guessing game. :/
sure hope you get a few sunny days, that much grey rainy weather is too much. And good luck with Brandy, so frustrating!
hope the abcess issue resolves it's self soon! Ya...I think we may just move on into fall here in the PNW!!!
it's been rainy and in the 70s this week for my first week at my new job and i have not yet worn a coat, while everyone around me has, with scarves. i do however have an umbrella, something i never owned in drizzly seattle, but something that is necessary in downpour germany. so here i am, short sleeves, sweating, umbrella.
i love the rain. i really do. but i feel for you because i know you have not had a break from it.
emerald city, evergreen state...my home. (my husband took a quiz in an airplane's magazine: what is seattle's nickname: the emerald city or the cloud town? and he answered "cloud town.": ))
i hope brandy gets well soon. your piebald sure looks pretty in that photo.
i came home today to a note on the table: baasha has herpes virus 5 in his eyes, based on labwork. vet comes soon with more meds. well i hope so! (but he looks great, i'm not worried.)
i look forward to hearing more from you soon.
Sending lot's of healing thoughts Brady's way. Both my Fox Trotter gelding break out in hives if I use Pyranha but the mares are fine with it.
Too bad that Brandy is still a bit lame! Poor mare! Abcesses seem to be a guessing game - hopefully she improves for you soon...
Too bad about the allergy as well - horses are just big expensive puzzles most days....
All that green sure does look yummy! ;-) The clover especially. Weird about the hives! Has to be the fly spray. I tried a different brand from that blue label bottle I always used, but it's sprayer puttered out on me so I dumped it into my old one. So far it seems to work fine. It's a couple bucks cheaper but still in the $20 range!
Hope you figure out Brandy's hoof issue soon!!!
I feel for you having the opposite extreme weather we're having here. The heat and humidity are suffocating, but I will take it over rain and cold any day. Most people around here are the opposite though so I get to hear about it a lot lol.
Poor Brandy. I hope the abscess blows soon. And I hope her hives heal up quickly too.
Oooh.....cool summer! Although, it's been sweltering here. I can't believe this crazy weather pattern we've been having in this country!
So sorry to hear you're still having problems with Brandy. It seems like it's been going on forever. Hope it gets resolved soon!
I thought we had to wait forever for summer temps here in Colorado. Hope you get some summertime warmth soon.
Poor Brandy. I hope her hives have gone away and that her hoof issue resolves soon.
Hmm i had a abcess in a horse last year, its a long time healing.
Your summer this year sounds like ours last year, hope you get some sun soon.
I hope the lalmeness goes away quickly and the hives is because she is grey don't you think, she is sensitive little princess.
I would love to send some of our summer to you here from Oklahoma! We have had over 100 degree weather for a month I think. We have also been in the high to mid teens like 114! Now that just isn't right!!!
