Hair Dilemma

This might be really silly but I have naturally curly hair and I hate it. Is this anyway to start off a blog post?

Everyday is a bad hair day, believe me. One day it stays in tight curls and the next it frizzes. I use alot of hair products on my hair to keep the frizz and curls under control. I also keep my hair long, if I cut it short I would look like a poodle, really!

I get alot of comments from people I don't know that they love my hair! You wouldn't if you had it is what I tell them. Of course all of these people have straight hair.

I usually wear it pulled back, I can't stand it in my face or on my neck. It is not the type of hair to have in the summer, I am glad our summers aren't too hot. On hot days I pull it up in some kind of bun twist thingy. I don't even know what to call it. It just gets it off my neck and back.

I have straightened it with a hair straightener and a hot iron straightener, it doesn't stay that way for long, especially if there is any humidity, plus it takes me at least an hour after my hair is dry to get it straight. Who has time for that? I prefer to throw my hair up and go!

I have tried numerous hair products and have finally found one that works pretty well. I have to shampoo and contition my hair every day. I use Marc Anthony Simply Curls. Than I use John Freida detangler. Once I get my hair combed out I put in Marc Anthony Simply Curls mousse and gel and than spray on Aussie Sprunch Spray, I usually let my hair air dry. It doesn't frizz as much. If I have to use the hair dryer I dry on low and I won't dry it completely. Whew! Long process. But it is the only way to get my hair to semi-cooperate.

I have pretty much decided there isn't much I can do, so I keep it long and deal with it.

My dad has naturally curly hair, this is where I get it from. My mom says she would do anything to have my hair. I always tell her No! You do not want naturally curly hair, because if you have straight hair you can either have it straight or curly! I don't have that option! Sorry Mom! But this is the truth! I think everyone that I have run into that has naturally curly hair says the same thing, if you have it, you hate it.

I know we all have bad hair days from time to time but how many of you have bad hair days like me? If you do have naturally curly hair, what kind of products do you use? I would love to know if there is something else out there that really makes a difference for curly heads like me!

Hmmmm...I guess I know a thing or to about naturally curly hair, as mine looks a lot like yours when it is not tamed...lol!!!

I have found that the right stylist and cut make a huge difference. I now get my hair thinned out-seriously!!! She cuts huge chunks of hair out with these square scissors (I think she calls them texturizers). Even by doing that though, I still have more hair than most people do.

I have tried hundreds of products too, and I currently use Redken's "Ringlet" and "Hardware" (simultaneously) to tame my tresses. I am sorry Paint Girl!!! I wouldn't wish our hair on anyone either!!!

I can't believe you found all of those horsey pictures that were also great hair pictures! ;)
The best advice I have heard from others with similar hair is go get the right cut, and get it thinned (like Melanie said) or, professionally straightened. One of my friends had great luck with Japanese thermal straightening, but that is really expensive!
An interesting thought about thinning, if that makes your hair lighter in weight, will it then not lay as flat? Or, if it was thinned and lighter, would it be much easier to use product in and also to straight iron out? Maybe a reader knows!?
Anyway, until you try something else, it sounds like you have a good system going! And keeping Marc Anthony anyway, LOL!

curly haired girl here. I recommend ISO's "bouncy cream". It's leave on. I shampoo and condition in the shower. The I use a leave on conditioner and comb out my hair (with my now departed mare's comb) and then I 'scrunch' in the bouncy cream. Blow dry w/ a diffuser or let air dry. I hate my curly hair too. "i wish i had your hair" Yeah I wish you all had it too especially when it's raining or when it's super dry & windy. I can relate honey.

P.S. had my hair professionally "straightened". It lasted about 6 hours. I wouldn't waste my $$$ again!!

I personally have the STRAIGHTEST hair in the world, but not a good straight because if I try to curl it; it does 1 of 2 things, either gets really fluffy or it doesn't last longer than 2 minutes LOL!! Now I have a friend with super curly hair, I will ask her what she does because her hair is GORGEOUS!!! I'll let you know, and yes thinning it is a good idea.

"if you have straight hair you can either have it straight or curly"

Soooooo NOT true!! I have poker strait hair. It's very long (try down to my belt) and it's impossible to curl at any length.
My mother is a hairdresser, she says she has never seen such stubborn strait hair. It gets static on everything. I can't get out of my car without shocking myself.
For prom my sister did my hair and we curled it. It took two completely full bottles of this 15$ a bottle hairspray that you can only get from the hair supply place, with a valid hairdressers license. It stayed in until the next morning where I woke up and rubbed my head. It all proceeded to fall out.
I can't even keep it in a proper ponytail because its so darn thick. It slides out so easy. I found those goody stay put elastics are a godsend.

I think we all want what the other person has! lol

My hair is, well for lack of a better word it is stupid. It is kinda wavy, kinda straight. Doesn't hold curl, gets frizzy if its not straightened 'juuuuust right'. But if I try to leave it wavy it ends up all lank and half-ass straight/wavy. Blah. :P

CDN Cowgirl described my hair to a T. I wish my hair was either straight or curly. As it is, it's just wavy in all the wrong places. lol!
(Sounds like a song)

I only wash my hair once a week. Here in the desert, anymore than once a week, and my hair is dry and toasty, and breaks off. I'm grateful I don't have to wash it every day. Who has time for that?
It's also healthier for your scalp and hair if you don't wash it so often.

I think your hair is beautiful. I bet you look stunning when you wear your hair down.

You just need to live in the right climate...like New Mexico :)

Your hair really IS beautiful! But I feel your pain. I have naturally curly hair too. Although, it's not quite as curly as yours. I can get away with straightening it, but any type of humidity usually wreaks havoc on my "do". My hair actually has a bit of an identity crisis. If I left it to it's own devices, it would be BIG, fluffy, part wavy, part curly, part straight. It can't decide what it wants to be. It's also very thick. No matter what, it's a constant battle to get it to do what I want. Do you ever do a french braid? My favorite is to divide my mane in half and do two french braids...I bet you would look cute with that style! Just don't forget to sunscreen the "crack" on a trail ride or you'll end up with a heck of a scalp burn!

I can totally relate to you. I have had naturally curly hair all of my life. It drove me crazy! Mine wasn't as curly and wavy as yours. I agree with what some folks have said about the right cut. Also about having it thinned. Now that I am in my 50's my hair is short and straight. I love it! Good luck.

Sounds hard, but you sure look good! :) Isn't that all that matters?? Hee hee

paint girl, you don't want to hear this but your hair is awesome. be glad you aren't losing your hormones yet and with them goes the hair! i used to have hair as thick as a horse tail and i can tell it is getting thin...everybody says how thick it is but they don't really know. i did see some hair product on one f those late night ads (little bear woke me up again) and it looked really good..begins with a 'w'...short word...can't remember it. sorry! hope you don't mind, i joined your blog...love your story about dakota!!!!

I have some interesting challenges with my hair too. I get my hair thinned every time I get it cut, but sometimes I almost don't because having my hair layered helps a ton! I'd say it takes me at least 30 minutes to do my hair, and that's now that it's shorter! A friend of mine has VERY similar hair to yours - and funnily enough, she also worked in retail for a long time! Anyway, she has somehow found a way to keep her curls well managed. They never look frizzy, always really stylish. I may have to pick her brain sometime!

I've got the "naturally curly" that isn't really curly, curly. Just looks like I didn't comb it... ever!! So I used a straight iron, smoothing serum, and hairspray. And then I proceed to pull it back into a ponytail, because I HATE having it on my neck/in my eyes. LOL!

I do get mine thinned. Massively thinned!! And layered. And it is much, much easier to straighten that way. And I go to a very good (expensive) salon. Now that my money is tighter, I color it myself, and don't get it cut as often. It's time to go get it cut/thinned again, because it's becoming difficult to straighten. Super thick.
Try having it thinned at a really good salon. And oddly enough, some layers might help, too.
I love your hair. I think it's beautiful in the photos. If mine were that curly, I'd let it curl. Alas, mine is the stupid looking "please comb your hair" look if I try to go "natural". :o)

I have thought about my above comment and now what to offer up my sympathies. Really, it has to be hard dealing with your hair. As good as it looks, I bet it is frustrating. My hair has enough wave/almost curl to it that I have to blow dry it or it will friz. I can only imagine if I had truly curly hair how I'd feel.

Just wanted you to know. :)

I have a friend that has really curly hair similar to yours. She started shampooing her hair only once a week, but she continues to use a conditioner on it every day. If you look at the ingredients on a shampoo bottle and compare them to the ingredients on a conditioner bottle, there is only one difference, and that one difference is a lathering agent. We have all noticed the difference in her hair, she said it frizzes less, it is easier to manage, and she doesn't have to use as many products to keep her hair in place.
(She did have to wean herself down to one shampoo a week. She shampoos more if she gets sweaty.)
