Amazing Progress....

Chance is progressing really well. It is really hard for me to put into words right now, on how well she is doing. I think I am in shock! She is absolutely amazing. I think she has to be the smartest horse I have ever worked with. I have never worked with a baby, let alone a Mustang baby. My horses came to me very greenbroke at the ages of 7 and 9. Yes, they were extremely green, but they weren't babies. So I knew going into this process, that it would be different. But I never realized how different it was going to be. What I mean by different is by how she is responding to everything I am doing, and I don't see her every day. I am able to get down to see her at least 2 days a week, sometimes 3 days. I have only been able to pet her for the last 3 days I have been to see her. Each time gets better and better. She just loves the human touch.

Remember the video where she nipped me? A few days after that, I went to see her, and she tried nipping me the whole time. At one point, I stuck my thumb out when she went to nip me, and she spun around and went running over to her mom. I think my thumb barely grazed her muzzle. But she came right back over to me after that. Yes, she did try to nip me again, but I would just stick my thumb out. I wasn't expecting what happened the next time I went to see her, which was on Saturday. We didn't get there until late in the day, the OH had to watch a college football game, which went into overtime. So it was around 5:15 p.m. when we arrived. She was in a separate corral from her mom, we are doing a slow weaning process. I have never had to wean a baby before, so I had contacted Tracey on how we should go about the weaning. She said she likes to do a slow weaning, which has been happening for a couple weeks now.

So we enter the corral, and Chance comes right up to us. She let me pet her right away. I had brought a lead rope and brush with me. I wanted to see how she would react to other objects, besides my hand. Before you know it, I was brushing her. She only moved her head slightly when I put the brush up to her, once she realized what I was doing with the brush, she was lovin' it! I was able to brush her neck, chest, shoulder, back and rump. She did get a little nervous when I went down her front legs. But she does that with my hand too. What amazed me even more, was that she never tried to nip me. All the times before, just petting her on the wither, neck and shoulder, she would try to nip. But not today. She didn't even try. So I decided to pull out the lead rope to let her sniff it and get used to it being around. She was very interested, and sniffed it and tried to pick it up. I very casually clipped it onto her halter. I knew that wouldn't be a problem, since the last time I had been out, I had to lower her halter down a hole, which she accepted really well. Plus I had been able to grab her halter and she didn't mind. Once I got the lead rope snapped onto her halter, she immediately tried playing with it. Babies! She scooted off for a couple seconds, then she tried playing with the lead again. I put pressure on the lead and it wasn't long before she was giving to the pressure. I released the pressure immediately. I did this a few times, then went back to brushing her. Still no nipping. You go baby girl!

I have to apologize for the terrible pictures. The evening sun was at a really bad angle for taking pictures. So my OH did the best he could. Here is my baby on the lead with the brush in my left hand.

I now have the brush in my right hand, and I'm brushing her neck.

She is totally accepting the brush on the side of her face. She's not moving her face around like she used too. Before when I would bring my hand up to her face, she would move her head from side to side, and way up in the air. This time she kept her head still.

I am brushing down her legs, which she isn't too into yet. But knowing baby Chance, she will accept this very quickly! In the background is her mom, Liberty.

After I brushed her all over, except all the way down her legs, we went back to some leading. She did so well! Every time I put a little pressure on the lead, she would take a step forward. I released immediately, and she got a good petting. She picked up so quick. Again, pressure, step forward, release. Good girl! She was totally getting it! She wasn't scared at all. She accepted the lead like it was nothing. I ended it right there. I took the lead, off and let her roam around. At one point my OH says "Lets go to the other side of the corral and see what she does". So we walk away to the far side. She immediately follows us over to where we went. She came to me. My OH made a comment that she was bonding with me. Yes, my baby is bonding with me! But she likes my OH too!

She looks so small next to my OH. But when you see the pictures of me next to her, she doesn't look that small. I guess when you are 6'2" and 205 lbs, then anything looks small!

Chance only tried nipping me once. Wow. Impressive, considering how many times she tried to nip a few days ago! Even with all the brushing I did, no nipping. I am so happy how everything is going. I am more than happy. She is doing so well. I never thought I'd be at this point with her. And if I was, I never thought I'd be brushing her, and having a lead rope on her already.

We will be bringing Chance home in 2 weeks. Can you feel the excitement? I absolutely can't wait!! Seriously! Only 2 more weeks of waiting! It'll probably be the longest 2 weeks of my life!

You must have patience, well done. I think the progress is great.
I am one of these people who have no patience for training, something I need to work on I know, that's why I get older animals...all the hard work has been done :-)

It's amazing the difference when you have a baby compared to a full grown horse. Babies don't have things to unlearn, everything is new so they don't have bad habits already.

Oh what wonderful progress! Don't you feel higher than a kite? You will just dance through these next two weeks...and then...viola - she will be HOME!!! Oh, the sweet little baby will love her new home with all your animals. What a big new world awaits her!

oops...meant "voila" not viola - as in "there it is" not the stringed instrument!

Babies are so much fun.. we have had 6 or 7, and they were all so different.

Some were just sweet as anything, those also had the best moms....what doe they say, the apple doesn't fall to far from the tree!

I wish I had kept 2 especially.. they were awesome. They both got wonderful loving homes.

It is so fun to read about your progress with Chance! I can't wait for the continuation of the story...

I can't believe how good she is doing! I bet you are excited for her to come home and be on the property and easier to work with! Even Pappy said tonight that lots of (domestic born) baby horses are left mostly unhandled until they are weanlings to a year old, and that she wouldn't be a problem. He must be relying on experience from Uncle Jess, lol! :)

She sounds like a sweetie. If only I could train the man cub so easily. Maybe I should try poking him with mu thumb tomorrow!

Girl you don't even give yourself the credit you deserve!!! Chance sure is smart BUT you are the one who is handling her and the minute a foal trusts you then they love to please!! You have got such a natural gift with horses it is amazing!! Maybe someday in your future you'll be one of those helping to rescue horses from bad situations!! I mean you already are but in your path I see you doing awesome things with these great animals!!

ps~ Looking at these pictures I'm still going to say that I think she is black and it looks like her coat might be sun bleached, making it that kind of orange/brown around the body are. But her head and legs are black so I'm thinking that's what you got!! Such a pretty girl!!

Your little nipper is so cute. She almost looks small enough to pick up and carry around with you! I love how dear she is. How do you refrain from hugging her over and over? Because I would want to do that all the time if I had a little baby mustang. I also think I love Tracey because she seems like such a kind and compassionate animal person. Evidence: the slow wean! That is so kind. Are you following any one particular trainer for her training? I know you have mentioned Parelli a few times.
I just love seeing that little filly!

She is just the cutest lil thang! And your progress with her is so cool; I can imagine how excited you are everytime you go to see her. These next 2 weeks will fly by, and then she will be with you at home. Won't that be the coolest then, to have her there with you, and be able to work with her every single day!! :)

Awwww! This is so exciting and so full of encouragement! They say that Mustangs are very smart. And she so pretty and cute, too. I'm glad that your time together is filled with positive experiences and bonding. She's got a great home with you and your OH.
So are you getting her 'crib' ready and preparing her new herd for her arrival? So fun!

That's really cool! I've never interacted with a mustang before, but you're getting me really interested. She sounds like a real gem (and quite a looker too!)

By the way, how's the volunteering going? Fall in love yet?

I am so excited for you! She really does seem like a super smart girl. Her mom seems really smart too. Not all freaky and skittish like I would have thought an 11 year old wild horse would be. They both have a lot of sense about them! I am really happy for you and Chance. She is such a cutie!

Glad to hear that she is adapting to people so well. Now is the time, they grow so quick and are MUCH harder to control when they are 1000+lbs!

You think this waiting is hard, the painful waiting period is until you can finally ride her. That is the part that seemed to take FOREVER for me.

Ooo.. I think there's going to be a couple jealous horses at your place when the baby arrives. I'm enjoying reading about your progress.

You two look adorable together! I'm glad she's down there where you get to play with her more often than if she were here.

Now...who's going to take the beautiful Wadatika and experience the mustang magic???

She reminds me of Isolde! Isolde still loves to be brushed and follows us all over. Chance is more forward than Isolde (thinking of the lead rope), like Kalahari, which I found easier when training.

Oh she's so cute! It sounds like she's trusting you so far....when she starts to give to pressure consistently.... I'd start messing with her ears and head. Teach her to put her head down (pulling gently downward on the lead rope and release as soon as her head moves down to follow your hand down). After she has that solid...you can ask her to put her head down with one hand and touch her ear with the other....at first just barely brush her ear quickly and make sure you release her with the lead rope. It's a bit of a juggling act at first for human but it works. More and more you can increase the time spent touching the ears but take it slow. Pretty soon you'll be head hugging her...they love that! So fun to see your progress.
