I Am Insured, Finally!

I received a phone call the other day from my OH. He called to tell me he had good news. I know, it's been so up and down for us lately with good news, bad news, good news, bad news. So he tells me that his medical insurance had finally approved me to be on his medical plan! Finally! We have been dealing with this for 3 months. Yes, I did not have insurance for 3 months! I know a lot of people don't or can't get insurance at all, but I have always had insurance from the company I worked for. When they went out of business, I was on Cobra for 2 months, but since that company was no longer going to be in "existance", I couldn't continue with Cobra. I checked into private options, yeah, NO WAY could I afford that! I totally understand how so many people can't afford insurance. I had my OH check into his company's insurance to see if they cover "domestic partners". He received all the paperwork and yes, they did cover domestic partners, but there was so much that had to be done in order for me to be approved to be on his insurance.

We had to have 2 notorized affadavits, and 2 current statements with both our names on them. By current statements, it had to be a mortgage, car loan, bank account or utility statement. Well, even though we have been together over 14 years, we buy our own vehicles, we have separate bank accounts, he bought the house, and the utility statement was in his name only. So we called to have the utility statement put in both our names. The only vehicle loan we had together was my horse trailer. I am the primary account holder, he is the co-signer. I called the bank my loan is with, and they fought me tooth and nail about adding his name to the statement. They said all they could do was send me a letter. My OH's insurance company wouldn't accept the letter, even though it had both our names and the loan information in it. So another call to the loan company. I asked to speak to a supervisor. They still wouldn't do it. The only thing they could do is put my name first on the statement, then put C/O "OH's name". I didn't think it would work. But it did! Big sigh of relief here! I was really worried that if I couldn't get on his plan, then I would have to be uninsured. I have mentioned before that I have had lung and knee surgery, and I think I probably need another knee surgery or two someday. So being without medical insurance just wasn't going to work.
This came at the right time. Now that I have a job, and a dangerous job at that, having medical insurance is a must.

Just in the last 2 1/2 weeks of working with horses, I have had 2 rope burns, a blood blister, and I had a 15.3hh horse spook and come down on my foot. I was pretty sure nothing was broken, but I knew something was going to be bruised. When I got home, yep, my big toe was bruised. The next day, I had a 16+ hh horse step over and put his hoof right on that same foot! He just wanted to itch his side, and was balancing himself with that leg, but he is an english horse, and has those big shoes on! My poor bruised toe. Anyways, no major injuries. But now I know, that if anything worse happens, I have insurance! Yes mother, I am being careful!

The weather has been really wacky here, pouring rain one day, clouds the next, thunder and lightening, than rain again. I have worked late the last couple days, so I haven't been able to get out to play with Chance. I miss my baby! Actually, the day we had a thunder and lightening storm, way before it happened, as I was getting the horses to turn out, longe and groom, even the most mellow horses were acting all spooky and jumpy. I knew something was going on to cause this. Before you know it, it starts to just pour rain, and then the thunder and lightening hits. I think all that electricity in the air caused the horses to go a little crazy! I find it so interesting how animals can sense a storm or earthquake, before it happens. Amazing creatures I tell you!

I wish I had some pictures to share, but with my long hours at work, I get home right before dark, and my camera doesn't take good indoor pictures! Hopefully this weekend the weather will cooperate and I can get a few photo opportunities!

Insurance is a big deal - good that you've got it. As you say, everyone needs it. I know what you mean about the cost of private insurance - my husband and I have it and the costs are very high.

Insurance is a VERY big deal. Even if it's not great coverage, these days it's a must. As you said, especially now with your job.

Leather gloves and steel-toed boots.

WV = shosemm
They sayed it couldn't be done. But I shosemm.

Glad you were able to get the insurance thing worked out! I always worry about my American friends and their health insurance situations! We are so spoiled here to not have to worry about that.

I hope you can get some time this weekend to work with Chance!

Thank goodness you got the insurance. If you two don't qualify for domestic partnership after 14 years, who does?!? I second the motion for steel toed boots, btw. ;) Save your toes!

Good for you getting the insurance worked out. Brian and I have private insurance which started out being reasonable, but has increased each year! Hopefully you will get more Chance time soon.

what a relief for you! i have private ins. and it is so high. glad they 'do' domestic partners, had no idea! you might lose that toe nail. same thing happened to me. blue stepped on the big toe twice in one week! he is flat shod, but still lost the nail. have fun with baby chance.

Congratulations on the health insurance win! My son doesn't have insurance and I'll probably end up buying some for him for $100 a month. Won't cover anything except something catastrophic, which is when you really must have it.

That is so encouraging to hear about your insurance situation. Dave and I have been together for over 20 years and starting sharing bank accounts, loans, etc after the first year. It is so frustrating the road blocks that are sometimes thrown up because we aren't married. Luckily, we both have jobs that offer good health insurance...at least for now. Who knows what this crazy economy will bring tomorrow. If I didn't have to work for a living, I'd be lobbying across the country for recognition of domestic partners in more arenas...that and the dissolution of breed specific legislation targeting pitbulls, but let me get off my soapbox. Have a great week!

I thought your new job would have provided you with insurance, considering the risk. Is it full-time? You need not just steel-toed boots, but steel-everything boots. You also need to make it easier on you and your OH, and just get hitched... but that personal, so I'll shut up now.

Definitely with your job you need that insurance! So glad you got it all worked out. Hope you are having a great weekend, and spending some quality time with Chance. :)

Congratulations on getting the insurance. It is too scary to be uninsured in this country. Don't even get me started on it. We NEED a Public Option....We had to buy our own insurance for years -- $600 per month, and when John got hurt, it still cost us $10K!!!

Yeah on the Insurance.(wipe brow, sigh of relief for you!).

Ouch on the toe..that had to hurt!

Such good news!

When we had that big earthquake a few years ago, my horses were so spooky that same day.. it happened that evening. What was funny..my husband looked at them, and said I think were going to have an earthquake...

It's a good thing that you were able to get coverage from your OH's insurance, you never know when you'll need it.

I had to chuckle at NuzMuz's comment, LOL! :) That girl and I are on the same page!!
I think you should get some steel-toe boots, too. Something comfy but hardy because you will get stepped on again and take it from your DR, you can break a toe/foot and be hobbling around for a bit.
Can't wait to see ya and catch up!

Yay, you've got insurance! Scary without it. We've been without insurance for my entire family now for over 4 months! gah! Hubby started that new trucking job and it just hasn't started until he's been there for 6 months. That's another reason I'm not even trying to ride any horse, much less Baby Doll, and I only do the bare necessity with her (feed, groom). After what happened with my knee I can't risk getting hurt now without insurance.

Just a note about those steel toe boots around horses. Be very careful and make sure they are good quality and go further than just the toes. A lady at the horse rescue was wearing steel-toed boots and when a horse's hoof came down on the end of the boot, when the horse ran into her from another horse chasing it, the steel bent down and severed three of her toes.

I will never wear steel toe boots because of that horrible experience.

Be careful!

Ask yourself, "Do cowboy boots have steel toes"?

Why do you think they don't?

I am SO glad for you that you got your insurance sorted out. I had a similar situation a few years back and it was a constant nagging worry. When you have an active lifestyle, you have to be prepared for injuries and it's scary to think you're not covered. So happy day for you!
