She was happily munching her hay down when I went up to catch her. She let me walk up to her, but she didn't want me to put the lead rope on. It took a couple minutes to get the lead rope attached to her halter. She never tried running from me, she just would move away a couple feet to the side. Once I caught her, I led her up to her shelter so I could get my brushes. I first used my hand and rubbed her all over. I have brushed her before, but it had been a couple weeks. Once she relaxed, I grabbed a brush and started grooming. She was loving it. I can pretty much touch everywhere on her body, except for her hind legs. I haven't tried touching her there yet. I want her to relax a little more before I attempt to rub down her hind legs. She is very accepting to touch everywhere else. I have even moved all the way down her front legs, which she promptly picked up for me. She must know that she is going to be getting her hooves trimmed soon!
My sister arrived and came up to see us. I worked on leading and giving to pressure on the lead. My sister was able to snap a few pictures of us.
Here I am leading Chance. She is doing pretty good. She only stopped a couple times and wouldn't move forward, but it only took a few seconds to get her going again. She likes to walk right behind me, which I am working on. But overall, she is doing really well.
In this picture she was trying to walk behind me, so I was trying to get her to walk beside me.
I even got her to take a step backwards. She is one smart little girl! I swear all I have to do is ask her one time, and she knows what I am asking her to do. She is totally different from Fritzy, who is a brick wall. It can take days for Fritzy to figure out what I am asking her to do, but with Chance, she just gets it. I think this is going to be one easy horse to train. I hope I didn't speak to soon! There is so much for her to learn!
We had a nasty rain storm move in. I have never seen so much rain at once. The horse's pastures are now lakes. Chance has turned one area of her pasture into a mud pit. Hey summer, where did you go? Can you come back, please?
I am giving Chance a hug. She doesn't look like she is enjoying it much, but really she was!
I also brought her other baby halter up. I sacked her out with it, then put the nose piece over her nose a few times. Once she was relaxed, I brought the crown piece behind her ears and buckled it. She did very well with that. I will continue to practice putting on and taking off the halter, before I take her other halter off. Right now I need to be able to catch her. Once she comes up to me, and I can put a halter on with no problems, her other halter will come off permanently.
We ended the day on a good note. I let Chance go. She was very interested in my temporary grooming bag. It is temporary because I am waiting for the feed store to get the pink grooming bags in. They were out of pink ones so I am using another bag for now, which isn't very convenient, but it gets the job done.

The only time it rained today was when I was out working with Chance, of course. So we got a little wet.

Behind Chance you can see the mud pit that she has created from her pacing.

After I went back into the house, I was able to check on her all day. She was totally fine. No pacing, or running around. I even saw her laying down, which I have NOT seen her do since she has been here, but I am sure she has, I am just not home to see it. She does still pace during feeding time, but I think she just gets worked up because it is feeding time. That is why I was thinking she wasn't settling in.

And she is growing! I looked at pictures of her before she came home. She has sprouted up since she has been here.
On to other news....my sister came up to the barn the other day to watch me work a couple horses. I am glad she was able to come. I really wanted her to see what I do during the day. I saved a couple of my favorite horses for her. One was the 3 yr old stallion I have fallen in love with, and the other was the cranky halter/western pleasure mare. Even though she is cranky, I still like her. I still love my job. It is very hard, physical work but I will not complain. I am very happy! Yes, I do have a few injuries, a couple rope burns and a blood blister, but overall nothing to serious.
My crazy Aussie's and cats are wondering why I am not home anymore. I think they really miss me during the day. I just hope Sadie doesn't resort back to her aggression issues with Bailey. I worked so hard with Sadie while I was unemployed. I hope she remembers how to be a good dog.
I think that is about it on the news!

Yikes that's miserable weather. Rain is one thing but that much rain at once can make a person a bit blue!
I was kinda thinking Chance's "anxiety" might be just eagerness because of feeding time.
Nice to hear Chance is settling in. Sounds like the job is going well. I hate leaving my babies to when I have to work. Lily has been in my lap ever since I've been home. 2 1/2 hrs! Silly girl.
She is making great progress. I love how thick her coat is.
You two look so in tune with each other! She looks like she is happy to have found her forever mom and is eager to learn.
You are wearing GLOVES at work aren't you??? I have learned the hard way when handling a horse I don't know to wear my gloves, those damn rope burns hurt like a SOB!!!
Oh I know she was thrilled to spend the day with you!! Ever since we got our new filly last weekend it rained everyday until Friday! It was so frustrating because I couldn't do anything with her. SHe still hasn't been halter broke, well heck she won't even come to me yet. You know pasture life never been around humans LOL! And finally just last night she ate, yes I said ate. She has not eaten hardly at all since we brought her home. She would pick through the hay but wouldn't eat the pellets. So then we started adding Calf Manna to it so she would be attracted to the sweet smell and she's get that extra protein but that was 3 days until she finally figured it out. I had brought in one of my gentler yearlings to "show" her how to eat and after that she started sniffing the bowl.. UHH I was so stressed LOL!!
I agree with you I think Chance has had a growth spurt!! She's so gorgeous!! I just love her!!
I sure hope Chance keeps on being as easygoing as she is. She sounds like a real sweetheart, and is already coming along nicely.
Your job sounds so awesome.
Whoohoo! You two go!! ;) Chance looks great, and you are really doing a good job working with her.
This is going to be such a great journey to follow. Glad you blog now- Big Sis did us all a favor getting you to write about this!
I love how Chance has red in her forelock, mane, and tail. She is very good looking.
I'm glad she's settling in and responding so well for you. She sounds wonderful and sweet.
Glad your training session when well. Here's to continuing success.
How come you are keeping Chance by herself? She would be easy to introduce to the older horses wile shes young and not "competition" to them. Shes probably missin her mama. In the wild to not be able to touch or be with the other horses could mean death by a predator, even if she can still see them over the fence.
Shes darn cute tho.
Chance sure does seem to be a smart little girl!! Look out! She'll keep you on your toes. I am really so happy for you - your excitement just radiates out. Even the rain can't dampen it! Lol!
Chance looks great, and it's wonderful that she's such a quick study - that should make your job a lot easier!
She is just happy to see you and the food! Sounds like you are doing very well together!Glad you are enjoying your new job as well
That little Mustang is a heart-stealer!!! You are doing great with her. She will be a wonderful horse....
Chance is a big girl, judging by how tall she is at your side. Looks like she's doing good and will come around quick, which is good since your job is going to keep you so busy!
Hi Paint Girl! you have so much going on right now! So exciting and so stressful! I am glad you are liking your new job. i think the first few months of any new job are the hardest. But are those pictures of Chance the cutest ever?! Answer: YES! She is so lucky to have found her way into your arms! Of course I love that you are seeking pink accessories for her! Pink looks good on so many horses and it will really look good on her. But she'll look good in any color!
Everything may seem crayzee now, but soon everyone--filly, dogs, acts, blood blisters, Paint Girl-- will be all settled in and you will miss the chaos!
PS I love the little mudpile Chance is making! Besides, isn't mud good for their feet?
xoxo
Keep on rockin' it, Paint Girl.
Nice to read about Chance's progress. She is a cutie.
Chance is really getting settled in. That is great that she is so willing to learn. It will make everything so much more fun. The rain has made horse care so difficult. I am sure Chance doesn't mind the rain and mud, though. It is just us humans that get annoyed!
I got a rope burn this summer at the stampede helping Tena with her rental horse. They do hurt, I had never had one before!! Taught me something!! Glad everything is going so well and that you love your job!!
I recognize that pink bag! ;) You should get Chance a purple one so it doesn't get mixed up with the other girls'. I was impressed by how well Chance is doing! She is going to be a fun horse to work with. Say, while you're working on haltering and catching, can you practice w/my horse too, LOL!?
p.s. That cranky mare was my favorite! :) I think I'm going to buy her. When I win the lottery, that is!
Hopefully once I'm around on another Saturday, I can come up and spend a few more hours watching you do your Arabian thang!
We have mud pits everywhere too. By every fence line that is closest to the barn. It seems like the horses just know where the food comes from and they will pace back and forth along the closest place to the food. If that run on sentence made any sense??!!
But Chance looks like she is doing great! She is lucky to have you! It looks like you are doing great with her!
Hasn't the rain been horrific?
Chance is like her mamma, we did the head dance getting the lead on yesterday as well. Lib got hauled to her new home yesterday.
Have I welcomed you to wild yet? Smart as a whip, most of them. If Chance is anything like her momma, you're in for a treat!
Thanks for the Chance update. I'm glad you got to observe her for an entire day. Probably puts some of your worries at ease that she's coming along okay. We're in a rain pattern here too that looks like it could last a couple weeks. Yuck! I'd rather have snow than rain. But I'd like a chance to clean up the paddock real good and haul the stuff out first.
