New Project Part One

Since we put in the new goat pasture, we must put in a goat shelter. It rains a lot around these parts, except for this summer, and we need to make sure that we get the new goat shelter up before the rain storms come. And they will come, it's just a matter of time. So this is our new project. On Saturday my OH went and bought all the material, than we headed on up to the goat pasture to get started. My OH starts digging holes for the posts.

Sadie decided she would help. She is a good little digger.

As long as she digs where it doesn't matter, is fine with me, it's when she digs ankle breakers in the lawn that must be stopped.

Evidence of a digger.

Bailey is content just chewing on a stick. I was busy most of this day picking up rotted alder trees, from when we cleared for the arena, and putting them onto the burn pile.

This is every post hole diggers nightmare. Boulders. This was the 4th hole my OH started digging, and it caused a 45 minute delay. It did not want to come out.

Tada! He does it! Finally! That rock was a real booger! Thank goodness the rest of the holes went smoothly.

Around this time, I was standing back and supervising my OH when I heard someone yell "Hey neighbor!" I turn and look and yell "Yeah!" This was coming from our other neighbors right next to us, not neighbor J, the neighbors we get together with all the time. We have only talked to this neighbor maybe a few times in the last 6 years, since they bought the property next to us and built their house. So I thought that a little odd. He yells "She has a story to tell you!" I walk over to the end of the new goat pasture and say "What kind of story?" The wife says "We just saw a bear a little while ago, behind our shop!" I say "A bear?" She says "Yes, a bear! At first a momma deer walked by, than a baby deer, than my granddaughter says 'What is that?' Oh, it's a bear!" I say "How big was it?" She shows me with her hands. She says "It headed back towards your property, and we thought we'd let you know, to keep an eye on your goats!" I tell her "We've been working out here all day and haven't seen a bear!" So anyways, we have a new neighbor. A bear kind of neighbor. Not what I was expecting! We actually didn't see it, but I get chills every time I think of it, because we were out working about 40 yards from where they said it was headed. I sure hope the bear moves on and doesn't stick around long. We are figuring that it was just taking a leisurely stroll, since the river isn't far from our house. I will be keeping a very close eye on my pets, that's for sure!

Back to work we go. Of course we had to leave our dogs prints in the concrete. We might be a little crazy! But we don't mind! Sadie is actually smaller than Bailey, but her paw prints are bigger!

On Sunday, my OH's dad stopped by to visit. He brought along his Rottweiler/Coonhound mix, Marlow, to play. That will have to be a story for another day.

By the end of Sunday, the plywood was just tacked on. We'd have to wait to finish nailing another time.

My OH called me at 11:30 in the morning on Monday to say he was on his way home from work. They were done working for the day. So we would be going back out to work on the new shelter. I really got to help. I became the carpenter's assistant, and I nailed almost all the plywood on, yes, little ole me, nailed most the plywood on!! I was a little worried that my tendonitis might flare up, but it didn't. I also got a blister on my pointer finger. But that is ok. I feel like I had a much bigger part in building the goat shelter! I'd have to say I didn't do half bad nailing! I think my OH would hire me again! If you look real close in this picture, you can see Fritzy laying down next to her barn.

After we got the plywood nailed into place, we decided to start the roof supports. We didn't realize how late it was getting, so we decided to let our horses out in the long run. Our horses pasture connects to the long run, which now connects to the new goat pasture. We can open/close gates when needed to keep them in or out of different areas. It didn't take Fritzy, my pocket Paint, to figure out there was a new section of pasture! Oh No! Here comes the building inspector!

The building inspector walks up, very carefully, looks at the what is going on............

Than decides she will make her final inspection when the project is completed.

My OH puts on the roof beams. Now you will see why I always worry about him falling! Besides the fact that he has already fallen off a roof twice!

Another day done. Tomorrow is opening day for Pink Salmon fishing. So we will be taking a one day break from building, and we are going to our river to see if we can catch some fish! Yeah!!!! I can hardly wait!

That's a big shelter for 2 little goats. Oh well, lots of room in case the bears stop by for tea.

Hopefully that bear was just passing through and won't become a nuisance bear - that would be too scary!

You guys are really out in the wild!!! Bears!?! Love the new shelter...but bears?

The puppies paw prints in the concrete is perfectly adorable!

Goats, bears and salmon, oh my! Kinda makes sense that there might be bears in the area - they do like salmon, or so I've heard!

The new goat shelter looks great - you are so lucky your OH can build stuff!!! :-)

Wow, that is quite the goat house! Our two wouldn't know what to do with that much room...they have a little house (I prefer the term "cozy") that can really only fit the 2 of them. Good thing they like each other! :)

Looks good ,you deserve a break to go fishing.I wouldn't worry too much about the bear ,they are often around here ,we rarely ever cross paths.

There are so many things to note about this post! First, I am glad to hear anything about the goats! I would love to have a pet goat but we don't really have enough land, so I will have to sort of pretend that yours are mine!! Their new shelter looks splendid! I also love your building inspector! No bribing with carrots and apples allowed!
Also, I LOVE LOVE LOVE coonhounds! They are so beautiful and interesting. I don't know anyone who keeps them as pets! But you do! And I also love how happy your OH looks! That is a good photo of him!
My dog is a digger too! But usually she does it in the neighbor's yard! Oooops!!!!
Can't wait to see the finished shelter!!

The pink salmon fishing you mentioned must be the reason the bear was around....I hope it keeps its distance!! My husband is a carpenter, too, and has built a bunch of stuff around our house (deck, barn, shed, chicken coop) and I worry when he works alone. He has fallen, and even run a nail thru his arm with one of those automatic nailers!! Ouch! Your goats are going to love that shelter....

What a great goathouse, way to go nailing the plywood on! I love it when I get to take part in creating something like that. I hope the bear stays away, that would freak me out!!

You must be backed up to a forest area. We are close to National Forest and BLM lands, but are surrounded by neighbors and private property, so we don't see bears or deer around here.
I hope the bear stay focused on hunting the pink salmon and stay away from your goats, though. They probably will avoid your property because of the dogs, too.

Speaking of dogs, looks like Sadie is a 'Brown-Noser'. lol!
You guys are funny with the concrete paw prints. Before I had human kids I would have done the same thing with my dogs or cats, as they were my kids then. Funny how things change. My animals are still much loved, but it's different now somehow.

Anyway, I am loving the step-by-step goat shed pics, because we have to build a llama/goat/sheep shelter soon and have absolutely no construction experience at all.
Can you show more detail on how the roof support is constructed?

Leah~ It is a big shelter for the 4 goats, but we like to build big, because we can always rotate pastures and the horses than can use the shelter, which will be big enough to house them both, comfortably!! Spoiled they are, I know!

Lisa~ We don't back up to forest land, but it is very "woodsy" around here. Also having the river close by must make it appealing to bears for fishing! There are bear sightings around the area, but have never heard of one in our neighborhood before. Hopefully it doesn't become a problem.
Also, in part two of our shed building process, I will take more pictures of the roof beams for you, and hopefully my OH can help me describe it!

Love the dog prints in the cement!!! I think the bear is probably long gone!

We heard several people at the Tree Farm saying that they'd seen "the" bear last weekend. Probably the same bear?

I love that you did the doggie prints in the concrete. You should have done the goat or horse hooves, LOL! Great pic of Sadie's dirty nose.
I wonder if the bear was following the deer? Interesting sighting...at least it wasn't a mutant monkey! :) Keep that camera on you while you're working in case one happens to wander by....

Your life is so interesting.

Well by golly I need your OH to come build some stuff for me LOL!! My barn burned down almost 2 years ago and I'm still waiting for a new one LOL!!

Looking great though!! Can't wait to see it all finished!!

Digging post holes is a real pain around here because of all the river rock. I'm always using long metal rods to dig up rocks in my round pen too, so that the horses don't get stone bruises. A bear, huh? I guess it was more interested in eating the deer than you.

That's the biggest goat shelter I've ever seen!!! Ha...just kidding. It'll make a great horse shelter if need be too. Nice job!
