Horse Shoer And Brandy's Day

My horse shoer was out the other day. I brought my horses out over an hour early to give them a good brushing, mane and tail detangling and a much needed clipping. My shoer was supposed to be here at 1:00 p.m. He called me at 1:15 to tell me he was running a little behind and would be here in approximately 10 minutes. I have to tell you, my shoer has only been late one other time in the 5 years I have used him. And the other time he was late, he also called me to let me know. I don't care if my shoer is late. I understand all sorts of circumstances can cause him to be late. One thing I always do, is make sure both my horses are out, groomed, and hooves picked out by the time he arrives. I know they are on a tight schedule, and owners that don't have their horses ready can put them behind. My shoer always thanks me for having my horses ready for him. I think there were 2 times I didn't have them ready. One time, back when my horses could be a pain to catch, my shoer arrived and I was still trying to get the girls caught. The other time was right after I had knee surgery, and I just met him outside and asked if he could trim Brandy out in the pasture.

Here is Brandy, with Fritzy in the background, waiting as patiently as I am, for our horse shoer. She says "Come on! Why do I have to stand tied here for so darn long?"

Here is a sign I got for Christmas last year. My OH just installed it above our horse grooming/tacking area. My shoer noticed it and loved it!

This bird was brought into my garage by the Painted Creek Killer. I spent over an hour trying to get it out. I opened both garage doors, grabbed a broom, 6 foot ladder and wore myself out. I think I was more exhausted chasing a bird around than chasing my Aussie's! And that is tiring, believe me! Did I ever get the bird out, you ask? No. I had to leave to run horse errands with Pony Girl. But when I got home, I left the back garage door open, and haven't seen or heard it since. So hopefully, the bird escaped from the fangs of the PCK.

After running errands, Pony Girl and I brought our horses out to longe. After longing, I did some ground work with Brandy. Brandy is very responsive to me and I have been working on her ground manners since she was given to me 5 years ago. She has never had bad ground manners. But I just wanted to see how she'd react to the Clinton Anderson methods I have been using on Fritzy.

Here I am trying to get her to move away from pressure. She did really good going to the right, like Fritzy, but going to the left, I hit a brick wall. Uh Oh, Fritzy flashbacks. These pictures were taken with Brandy sidepassing to the right, her good side.

Here you will see her front left leg taking a step. This is when I release the pressure and reward her. Oh, and did you notice, I cut a few inches off my hair? It might not look much different, but it feels so much better! Especially in this hot, dry spell we have been in.

This is the first time I have tried doing training this way with Brandy. She definately moves her feet when you ask her too, for the most part. She is more responsive to it than Fritzy.

You will notice that Brandy has her fly sheet on. It isn't because of flies, the fly predators are really working. I haven't even had to use their flymasks. I was really hoping to be able to use that coupon on new flymasks this year! Well, not really, no flies are a blessing, so I am not going to complain. I put the horses flysheets on to prevent manure stains. They really keep the dust, ground in dirt and poo stains off my girls!

After the arena work, we brought the horses out to graze in chest deep grass. Horse heaven, no doubt! What I would really like to do some day, is put up a portable electric fence so I can turn the horses out to graze when I am home. My grass paddock that I have is really getting grazed down. With the unusually warm weather we have had around here, I might have to put the sprinkler out!

Sadie was enjoying making crop circles in the tall grass. I won't tell my OH, so next time he goes out there, he'll wonder who did it. It was the aliens! Seriously!

Sadie is the farm protector. She is always on the lookout for something that might come to harm us. I know if anyone ever tried to attack me, she would definately protect me! She is not one you want to mess with! Bailey, on the other hand, would lick the attacker to death! Which might not be a bad thing!

I took this picture of Pony Girl, uh, sis, what are you doing to my dogs mouth? I mean, I know they are very mouthy, but you just stuck your fingers right on in there!

This is better! Keep your fingers on top of her head! Aussie's are very mouthy, and they have a tendency to try to make you fall and break your neck. Since I am not working and am outside everyday with them, I don't know how many times I have saved myself from falling face first into the dirt. They like to cut right in front of me, as I am walking and nearly take me out. There is a funny story about my OH and Bailey taking him out. He was walking out to feed the horses one morning, and he heard Bailey coming full speed behind him. My OH was carrying my sister's boys hay out to his pasture. He didn't think anything of it, until Bailey decided to run headfirst right into the back of my OH's knees. Guess what happened? My OH's legs came flying out from under him, he landed on his back, with my sis's boys hay on top of his head and all over his body. I was not there to witness this. I was at work. This happened over a year ago, but I will never forget the story. Eventually I will need to do a post about my OH's mishaps. He has had a lot of these lately.

This should make my girl happy!

I have been experimenting with my camera at night. I am trying to figure out the settings. So I went outside to take a picture of the moon. I think it turned out pretty well!

It's not perfect, I mean, it was taken by my point and shoot. Hopefully one day, I can get a really nice camera like my sis's!

What a great post! Nice pictures...If you got your hair cut, then it must've really grown! Still looks beautiful. I know you get frustrated with your curls, but I'd kill to have some of them! Hee! Hee!

I want the pink halter! Great photos. Are we in a full moon phase? I'll have to check it out tonight if it's not too cloudy.

That's a great moon shot, esp with a point and shoot. :) What Nikon does your sis have? I have a D60, which my hubby got for me last Christmas. I love it!

We have to take our horses to the farrier, which is a pain in the butt. I've decided to try to find a farrier that will come here - I'm willing to pay the extra if it's necessary. Well, once I start working I'll pay the extra, lol. :)

Oh, and I love your horse sign too.

Ahhhhh yes...the wonderful world of Aussie's! LOL!!! Mine wants to be mouthy too, but I have never have let him. It helps him remember that I am the alpha dog, not him. :)

I love the beer bottles that are up on the ledge in your garage. Do they go all the way around? Our friends do that very same thing in their very large shop.

New shoes today? Now you can get many more miles in on those fun trails of yours. :)

I *thought* your hair seemed shorter!

Your night pic is very pretty, I love how the trees frame the moon. And man do those trees look tall!!

Rode at a jackpot today, wish they had no flies there. Those little sand flies/no-see-ums were horrible. I thought my new horse was going to flip over! :o Head flipping (because of those flies) is annoying but you can't really punish the horse, they're being tormented by them. However when that front end starts to lift... then there are consequences!

My farrier is always late. I don't mind if he lets me know but I have let him know that since I board and live 1/2 an hour away that he needs to let me know, especially in the winter!

I like how the pink rope halter makes Brandy's head look refined and more "Arab-y." She looked really pretty that day and the fly sheet does keep her cleaner, she was very white! :)
I think it's cute how Sadie will sit by my legs like that. She does it a lot when you aren't around. I think she thinks I am you, LOL! Someday you might have a Nikon, but your point and shoot is a much better quality than my point and shoot!

Mary~ Actually it is not a full moon, but my camera made it look like it is! I though that was kinda funny!

Oz Girl~ I am not sure what Nikon my sister has. But it is very nice! I'll have to ask her what model it is.

Melanie~ Yes, the beer bottles go all the way around the garage, they are all different beers. My OH got obsessed a couple years ago, he had to try every new beer he could find, so he could have the bottle to put up on display. I finally had to tell him "No more!" I sure hope we don't have an earthquake, and if we do, I don't want to be in the garage! LOL!

Brandy looks so white and pretty! That picture of Sadie rolling in the tall grasses is wonderful. I love that image! At first I thought it was a fluffy kitten. That is really cute! Crop circles!

Glad that little birdie escaped the clutches of the PCK! Little Lunar brought me in a snake the other night. Thankfully, I'm pretty much over my fear of them and don't mind picking them up to take outside (I have to put a glove on first though). ;) Your babies look beautiful! I just love Brandy's pink halter. I also sometimes put a fly sheet on Caspian...hard to keep those light ones clean, isn't it?! Plus, I like that it has UV protection. Fun post as always! :)

yup .. we had farrier day here too yesterday and fencing .. on on..

In my albeit limited experience horses are like us'ns.. one side's usually stronger than the other... what i've taken to doing is working the weaker side 2-1

Boy do I love that pink halter! it looks so cute on Brandy. I'll bet she feels very pretty while wearing it. i wonder what Pony Girl's horse would think if you slipped it on him! hee hee
I should try a fly sheet on my brumby so she does not get so filthy. One year all summer she had to wear a fly sheet because her white back kept getting sunburned. Fly sheets remind me of pajamas!

It sounds like you are enjoying yourself working with the horses and teaching them Clint's methods. You're out of a job, but teaching school to your girls, homeschooling at it's finest. I like the sign your OH put up, it's fun! What are you doing for the 4th? The usual BBQ? Don't know what's going on here yet. i know your Mom has to work the night shift and I have Man Cub duty, so who knows. I hope you have fun though!

We have two Aussies around our place and they are constantly tripping me! Maybe I'm moving too fast for their herd dog attitudes? :)

Oh, and Clinton Anderson is the GREATEST!!

LOL, love the post!! Kept me laughing, and yes my full size Aussie's have always been that way!! Now my mini she doesn't do that...Very interesting...Love the pictures, your doing great!!! And the moon shot turned out great!!! I can't even get a good moon shot with my "good" not so good D90...Still need to send it in, but I can't bring myself to part with it for 3 weeks!! I can still get some stuff out of it so I haven't been forced yet...Gonna have to bite the bullet and do it soon!!

Good post! Good luck with the CA training. That's what I used on Gilly and it worked very well for us.
Oh, I'm glad I have a bay horse! My neighbor has an Appaloosa, mostly white and she is green poo colored most of the time. Loves to be dirty, Gilly never lays in poo and seems to be clean most of the time....I am lucky!

Haha, we had our horses hooves trimmed yesterday and of course didn't have them in the barn before our farrier came so Pegasus was fine, but when it was Gunner's turn, he took off. There is no way Jim can catch him so I had to come out. He was being such a butt! The farrier was about to leave and come back later, when Gunner decided he would behave and came straight to me. He was just an angel after that, the little Pain!

Love the pics of Sadie, esp the one rolling in the grass, so cute! And your moon photo is great!

Oh, I forgot to tell you the shampoo I am using right now is Herbal Essences, I think for dry hair. I am pretty clueless when it comes to shampoo, I just use what smells good and doesn't cost a ton! But I can't use Suave, my hair hates it! I did use Pantene for a while but a friend told me it was horrible for your hair, I forget why...

Paint Girl, I think you've officially caught the photography bug! You are getting fantastic pictures.
