Something A Little Different!

A while back, I mean a long while back, my sister and I talked about getting an english saddle so we could ride english if we wanted too. My trainer/good friend just happened to have an extra english saddle around, that she said she would sell us. She brought it over, with a couple saddle pads, bridle, girth, everything! Now I haven't ridden english in 19 years, yes, 19 years!
Seriously! When I did ride english, it was just for fun. I never showed english, although I wish I would have. So please don't laugh at me when you see the pictures. Remember, 19 years!!

I longed Brandy first. Brandy has never worn an english saddle, so I knew it would feel different on her back. I really don't think she liked it. She does buck when I longe her with the western saddle on, but this time her bucks were different. She wasn't liking it! Plus every time she bucked, and she can buck, the saddle slipped forward on her. Brandy doesn't have much wither and she has a very narrow topline. I am sure this didn't help matters. The saddle seemed to fit her pretty good, but what do I know about english saddle fitting? Remember, 19 years!

Here is one of her many bucks. I could tell that her bucking style was different. I am sure glad I longed her!

Here the saddle slipped forward. Maybe one of my english readers can help me out. I don't want to sound like an idiot here, but I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to english. I can post, jump with my silly form, and that is probably about it. I do read magazines and books on english riding. But I feel like a total horse beginner and out of my element!

During longing, I had to adjust the saddle back to it's proper position.

I think my horse thinks she is part bloodhound. Or maybe she is checking out all the weeds in the arena, yeah, I know, I need to weed the arena! It's on my list.

I think Brandy finally got all the bucks out. Next step, getting on. I don't have a mounting block. I know I need to get one. I will be putting that on my honey to-do list, pronto. I am sure we have plenty of logs, that he can make me a nice large stump, to use for a mounting block. My sister had to give me a leg up. I am glad Brandy is only 14.3 HH. I have no idea how I use to be able to jump on my horse's bareback when I was younger. I can't do it now. I guess I lost my jumping skills.

Since I knew Brandy was not comfortable with a strange saddle on her back, I had a feeling she would be uncomfortable with a rider on top of that strange saddle. Yep, she did not like it. She fought me, she would not give to the bit, she was wringing her tail, she wouldn't listen to me at all! I just walked her around, hoping she'd eventually relax. We walked, and walked, and walked. We worked on some bending exercises, which she is very good at, but that day, not so good. We continued walking. I could feel her starting to relax, she wasn't fighting the bit so much, her tail wringing was slowing down. We continued to walk.

We kept walking until she got used to the feel of the saddle and finally relaxed. I think I had the stirrups adjusted too short. In some of the pictures of me riding, I look like a dork with my long legs. I did not post them here.

How do cowboy boots look in irons? Of course you can see my way too long legs, in jeans that look way too short. They are not. They actually seemed to ride up more riding english, than western!

We can't afford to buy the saddle now. But my trainer doesn't need it and she knows it's in a safe place, so here it stays, for now. I'd love to ride english more. I should probably take some lessons sometime, when I get a job. But for now, it was fun to try something different, after 19 years!

I have an Australian Saddle and western, my horses work with either.

It's hard to tell but from my experience, arabs and saddle fit it may be one of the following: too narrow, too wide, your mare has no flat spot behind her elbow where the girth goes and needs a saddle with a different type of rigging. Buuut if you have to use it try getting a crupper.

I always feel so "naked" when I ride in an English saddle. I do it every once in awhile just because it can't hurt. I suck so bad, English or Western, it doesn't really matter.

Darling found her saddle for $50, complete with irons and pad. Yeah...it's a cheapie ripping apart at the seams, but golly does she treasure that thing! She needs a new one for Christmas, me thinks.

Brandy looks good. Funny how going to a smaller saddle made her jumpy.

See you this weekend!

I have a dressage saddle that both my horses like because it's lighter on their back but it does put more pressure in certain areas of the back than a Western saddle does. So if it's not sitting right, it could be pinching. English can be trickier to fit. I had to restuff one of my saddles on a horse I no longer have to get it to fit him right through a physical problem with one shoulder. Then remove some of the stuffing after his shoulder muscle built back up. Sometimes saddle pads can make up for a saddle that doesn't fit right but your trainer can probably tell what's what better in person. Good luck!

How cool that your trainer was willing to loan you a saddle!! I have a new saddle on my wish list, but don't want to get one quite yet, 'cause I wanna save up for a good one. I figure if I'm gonna do it, I might as well start out on the right foot. I have my English saddle still from when I rode as a kid, but it really doesn't fit Caspian all that well. Has your trainer seen this saddle on Brandy? From what I've recently learned from my trainer, Arabs can be a bit tricky for English saddle fitting! There's so much to consider. Either way, though, how fun that you are branching out after all these years! For me it's the opposite; I've always ridden English, but I would like to also someday get a lightweight Western trail saddle. Just add it to the list right? ;) BTW - love the cowgirl boots with irons! :)

I was thinking that the saddle also didn't fit right, causing the ride-up on her withers and discomfort. But it was fun to right hunt seat that day, I have the pictures of my ride that I need to post soon, too! :)

JRosey~ I haven't had my trainer out to check the fit on Brandy yet. This was actually the first time I have had the saddle on Brandy, since my trainer dropped it off 6 months ago! She did mention to me to have her out to ride Fritzy with it before I did, because she hadn't had an english saddle on before, but actually my trainer did put one on Fritzy, once, on a trail ride, 3 years ago! Fritzy seemed fine with it back than.
I'll have to have her out to check the fit on Brandy.

It is amazing how horses can feel even the slightest change. I always see the english saddle as being a little piece of fluff on a horse's back--they are so small and light. I don't love riding with an english saddle, but once in a blue moon, when I get one out, I always still use the western bit. We must look a bit eclectic!
I'll bet you can practice jumping up and on to Brandy's back, sans mounting block! Would she stand for it?

I have no experience with English riding and English saddle fit, but I believe that if any saddle moves on the horse it is not a good fit. A friend of mine told me that we should have four fingers between the elbow and the girth. It is hard to tell in the pictures but maybe the saddle was not placed properly.

Hmmmm...I usually trail ride in an all-purpose English saddle, but it fits my horse to a "T," and I have never had any trouble with it. You may need to try adding a bump-up pad (in addition to the regular one) and see if that helps keep it from sliding forward.

Since forward is kind of a strange direction though, I am thinking that the saddle may just be to large for Brandy. How does it fit Fritzy or My Boy? You may just need a gel or cushion pad to add more bulk to Brandy's back and withers too....

PS-I like your cowboy boots and irons! It looks just like me! :)

PPS-I would love to come up this weekend, but I have two birthday parties to attend. Some other time though. :)

Wow. What a new and exciting experience for Brandy..and a great training opportunity. You helped make it a positive one for her. And I think you looked awesome up there. Women who are long and lean looks so much better riding English anyway. A huge butt and chubby legs just doesn't look ride on an little English saddle. hehe!
But I suppose the jeans issue is one reason that English riders wear breeches. I bet you would look awesome in them, too.

Riding english is so different from western, but I love both. Just work out the saddle fit bugs and have fun!
It does sound like the saddle may be slightly wide for her, but everyone else will give you the best advice. Have fun!

Good for you for trying something new! Maybe Brandy will really like it after a while!!!

Can't help you with anything else, but if you ride in jeans and boots with an english saddle, wrap your lower leg with a polo wrap! It keeps your pantleg from riding up and you don't get pinched in the stirrup leathers.

Funny how changing disciplines makes us all feel like newbies again. But it sure is fun to change things up now and then.:)

The saddle doesn't fit your horse and if you force it, you'll just cause issues with her and her back. You don't want to go there! Chiropractors and massage therapists are expensive. Also, the saddle doesn't fit you. Your legs are too long. You need a longer flap, maybe a bit more forward, too, to accomodate your long thigh. Maybe even a larger seat, also to accomodate the thigh.

Mentioned to Pony Girl about riding in longer leathers... perhaps this would help? Not sure about the saddle fit - it did seem to fit the Appy better. I have used a crupper with this kind of saddle before (many moons ago) but it doesn't help the look - or maybe the pig-rooting that your Brandy is taking to!!

I'd try a different make on her. Good on you for being adventurous!!!
