I received a phone call from a friend of ours last Thursday. I couldn't believe what she was telling me on the phone. My friend's brother knew someone that had a horse they wanted to find a really good home for, free. She wanted to ask us a really big favor, could we go pick up the horse for them? We are the only ones they know with a horse trailer. My friend and her husband have been talking for years about getting a horse. He had grown up around horses a little bit. She had a horse as a young girl. They now have a 14 yr old son and a 10 yr old daughter. They have been to our house numerous times, and the kids loved going out to pet our horses.
So when I answered the phone, and she was telling me about this horse that these people were giving away, I was excited for her but also a little concerned. They had went to look at the horse the day before she called me. What she told me about the horse is this: the horse is a 3 yr old Tennessee Walker mare with Oklahoma Star breeding. She is very calm, gentle, very friendly. She has been ridden by the adults and kids, they did see the kids riding the horse. She had shoes, but threw a front shoe. She would come with halter, leadrope, bridle, and a saddle pad, but no saddle.
Ok, so here is where all my questions come in. I try to find out as much as I can. More about the temperament, training, how old exactly, more info on the breed, trailering issues, vaccinations, and all that good stuff. Yes, the horse has been vaccinated, she hadn't been trailered much and from what I could understand, they had a hard time getting her into a straight load trailer. She was very sweet, the owner's kids were crawling all over her and she didn't care. Ok, so I tell my friend, let me call my OH and see what he says. I call him up, tell him the situation. He says yes we could help them out. I knew we'd help them out, we were in a similiar situation with Fritzy 3 years ago, when we didn't have a trailer and had to call a friend up to help us. So we planned on meeting our friend at her house at 6:00 to pick her up, than we'd drive another 35 minutes south to get the horse.
We get to the peoples house. They live in a housing development, larger lots, but NOT a horsey area. Hmmmm......... ok, so we back the trailer into the driveway and get out. Our friend goes to get the owners while my OH and I are looking around for the horse. We see a dirt paddock with one strand of electric fence about 3 feet high. I am thinking of Lisa, from Laughing Orca Ranch at this point! What is up with the fencing? Still didn't see a horse. The owners come out. All of a sudden we hear a horse running full speed, right up to the short electric fence. She actually came running to see us! Ok, this is good, she loves humans! So I asked the guy "She's a TWH right?" he says "TW and Oklahoma Star". Ok, so I know Oklahoma Star is not a breed, it is a bloodline. But I didn't get into that with him. I asked him how long he has had the horse, he says a year. The horse, whose name is Grace, was a sweetheart. She stood at the fence and just let us love on her. I asked the guy how old she is. He says she won't be 3 yrs old until August 28th. My friend had said she had thrown one front shoe, but I noticed she had thrown both front shoes. Her feet were a little overgrown. My friend asked about his farrier. He said he used this woman and she did a really good job if he was there, but if she came out when no one was home, than she seemed to not do a very good job. Red flag. What? This guy lets a shoer come out to shoe his horse when he isn't there? There isn't even a place to tie the horse, which is unsafe anyways! Ok. So they were going to give my friend a couple halters, one she had on and you could tell that she wore it all the time from the rub marks on her face. He also gave her some electric fencing supplies, a bridle and a bareback pad. They didn't even own a saddle. Hmmmmm...........So my OH and our friend put the little bit of stuff they gave her in the tack room of my trailer. After about 25 minutes, the guy finally gets a leadrope and leads her out of the paddock. The first thing I notice is he lets Grace run all over him. Oh no. She wanted to eat grass, so he lets her do it. I knew at this point that even though she was really sweet, that this guy basically lets her do whatever she wants. So I already had both my trailer doors open, and all the windows open to make it as light and inviting as possible for her. He says she has been trailered around 10 times. He walks her up to my trailer. He gets in my trailer, Grace walks right up and stops. She sniffs the shavings, she sticks her head into my muck bucket that I keep in the back on my trailer. I had to pull that out, because she kept tipping it over. He never once asked her to get into the trailer. He asked his wife to go get carrots. So the guy has a huge carrot and is kneeling in my trailer trying to get the horse inside with the carrot. Still not asking her to get in. He never once pulled on the leadrope. My OH and I give each other the "look". He asked his wife to pick up Grace's front leg and put it into the trailer. She was wearing flip flops. I had to contain myself from laughing. The first thing I thought of was the Clinton Anderson clinic I went too awhile back. When he did his trailer loading demo, and he showed us how most people try to get their horses into a trailer. If you want to see something very funny, go to this post I did on the Clinton Anderson trailer loading demo, where I put the pictures of him making fun of people and how they try to load their horses by trying to pick up their feet. Yes, this is what I saw. Ya gotta be kiddin' me! The wife picked up one of Grace's legs and sets it into the trailer. The guy still has a carrot in front of her face. Grace has her neck all stretched out. I do want to say that she was not showing any signs of being fearful of my trailer. She just did not know what she was supposed to do and her owners were not helping the situation. So after about 15 minutes of this, I finally say, "You know, I have boots on, let me get in the trailer". So I jump in. The guy gets out. I put pressure on the lead, she stepped forward, I praised her. The guy picks up a leg and puts it in the trailer. I didn't feel like I should tell him what to do, but apparently he doesn't know horses. I mean, I'm not a professional trainer, but I do train my horses and I know what horses respond too. So I continue to put pressure on the lead. Too much pressure and she felt restrained and backed up. I didn't want her to go up. My OH asked if he should get another rope. I said yes. So he goes and gets a rope. Now I don't like doing this, but this horse wasn't scared. She just didn't know what was being asked of her. My OH and the guy put a rope behind her butt, I put pressure on the lead, and viola! She is in the trailer. I make her stand calmly, praise her, pet her, get the trailer tie on her, get the divider shut. She starts to paw, uh oh, another Fritzy! We would have been there all night if we didn't step in. I was trying to play it safe by not loading the horse, I don't know the horse, this guy wanted to do it, ok. But seriously! Grace is not a dog! He totally treated her like she was his puppy. Here is Grace, in the trailer, finally!

I put her in the middle stall, I really don't think she had been in a trailer 10 times, so I didn't feel comfortable putting her on the wall. Ever since Fritzy had issues on the wall, I am a lot more careful about that. She looks so small in my trailer! She is around 14.3 hh though. The guy did say her dad was over 17 hh. Who knows if that was true. I did shut the drop down window, I know some horses see it as a possible escape route. I didn't want her to freak out and think she could try to jump out the window, even though there are bars there, doesn't matter.

We drive another 35 minutes to get back to our friends house. The pictures I got aren't that good. It was around 8:00 at night, and in all the excitement, I forgot to turn my flash on. Here she is a little while after we got back to our friends. She wasn't very nervous at all. When I went into the trailer to get her out, she stood perfectly still for me to unsnap the trailer tie, and I made her whoa and stand before I turned her around and we very calmly walked out of the trailer. She did that better than my horses! I didn't want to back her out, not knowing her trailering history, and dealing with a horse I didn't know. I noticed she kept trying to run over me in the driveway, so I went and did a training lesson with her. I did tell our friends that they need to stop that asap. They need to show her who is boss, and get her to back off. I showed them how to do that.

There is only one thing I am not sure of. What color is she? She is not bay. I wish my pictures turned out better. Her mane has black and brown in it, she seems dappled. She does have black legs. I was thinking some kind of dun color? I am not good with the dun, buckskin colors.

She seems a little underweight, but it could also be her age. If she isn't even 3 yet, than she has some time to fill out.

This picture makes her neck look like a pencil. It isn't that bad. She wasn't holding still for my OH, so it was really hard to get a picture. I will have to go over there another day to get some better pictures.

Overall I think she is a very nice horse. She has picked up some bad habits from her old owner, that need to be handled. I have offered my services to my friend to come put some rides on Grace and give lessons, if they want. I have already been emailing her a lot in the last couple days, giving them advice. I hope Grace works out for them. Her attitude and level head, makes it look like she will work out to be a good horse. I hope so. I am sure I will keep you updated on her, and hopefully I can get some better pictures of her color.

Good luck to Grace with her new family! It's nice to be able to pay it forward, isn't it? I think she has a sweet look about her.
So glad gace has a new home...cause it sounds like she was not in the right place for her!
Not 3 yet? Should be interesting. But with your help and her temperament it should work out okay.
Great story! Not to be negative but why is it that nothing EVER happens to people like that!! Well, maybe not never but you know what I mean.
It sounds like this is a really nice mare that just needs a tune up! Be careful riding her!!!
Oh and I would say that she looks like a Sooty Buckskin. I dont understand... they say she is a TW but she has Oklahoma Star breeding? Isnt that QH breeding? So she's a cross? And also, Oklahoma Star is like REALLY old breeding (1920-30s) so it doesnt say a lot about her...unless she is line bred that way.
Cute mare. I like her. Aren't people crazy though?
I will say she's a grulla. That's my guess!
Chelsie~ I was thinking the same thing about the Oklahoma Star breeding. Your right, that is QH. And yes, it goes way back. So this guy actually says that she is half TWH and half Oklahoma Star. So he thinks Oklahoma Star is a breed. I had to tell my friends that OS was not a breed, but a bloodline. This shows you how much this guy knows about horses. I believe Grace will be better off with my friends who know probably just as little as him, because they have me and other true "horse" people that will help them out.
Mikey~ I was thinking Grulla too, but than started second guessing myself. I think she is more dun. I will have to go back over there and get some good daytime pictures of her. I have never had such a difficult time with color before. This is a strange one.
OK so yeah first of all, these people need to get a clue!! That is how you get yourself hurt easily!! Now I have zero problem using a butt rope to apply pressure to get them in...My take is that it's better than bribing...Great job for you and OH to jump in and get the show on the road LOL!!
So on the coloring...We really need some good light pictures...Having said that the one with your OH standing on her right and she is facing you She definitely looks Grulla to me...Now in the pictures where there is light shining on her you can see some red in her...There are many colors of Grulla, they could even be sun bleached spots. My black horses will get reddish/orange spots from the sun...Does he have a Dorsal Stripe?!?!
Cute mare, sounds like our Lakoa. We went o see him in Jan 3 hours away.....got lost when we got there the ligt was gone, she has no indoor ony and outdoor with NO LIGHT.. He was so bossy and pushy and she giggled and smiled and treated him like a dog. We have had him for 7 monts 2 of those months he was sent to a trainers because his ground manners were so dangerous and I have little kids in the paddock with their pony. Old habits are hard to break. Now that we have him home we are working on steering...apparently he only followed and was the end of the trail line has NO idea how to steer but....he has a good heart and kind eyes. That mare wil be just fine, esp if your helping ;)
That was great of you to help out your friends. Sounds like that little mare will be in a much better home now, especially with you guiding your friends...
Poor little Grace needs some groceries , and a few lessons in ground manners and she will be away! So good that you were able to help get her to her new home. I would say maybe Grulla? for color .
She's tiny, isn't she? I expected a TW to be a bit taller...you know, like Steve Holt!, who is also three. Maybe that's the Oklahoma Star part of her ? :)
As for color...sooty buckskin, unless she's got a line back which would make her a dun. Or perhaps brown, but it's difficult to say in the shadows.
Oh, btw...your little Chance will be heading this way next weekend. So perhaps you and Pony need to make a drive north for our next ride and you can meet your baby :)
I was thinking grulla, too. She has a cute face and kind eye. I do worry about their inexperience, though. Maybe you can step out of summer "retirement" and give them some lessons, I think it would be beneficial. I don't think the mare would be intentionally dangerous, but it's possible that her pushiness and their lack of experience could equal trouble. We were young and inexperienced and managed to find out way though, with inexperienced horse parents! Luckily we were in 4-H and had an experienced neighbhor to help us!
i am glad this horse was 'rescued'...she seems so sweet! you were such a good friend helping them out! keep us posted on gracie...i am sure she will learn her manners with consistancy and a little time.
Your friends are very lucky to have someone with some experience to help them. Sounds like Grace has a nice temperment. Without help and a good mind this situation could have been major trouble waiting to happen.
When I read Oklahoma Star I was thinking "isn't that a QH line??"
I hope you'll keep us updated!
True story - the other day Kimfer was in the feed/pet store and a lady walked up to the counter with her arms full of 'horse stuff'. She dumped it on the counter and said to the clerk "Can someone tell me what I need to buy to ride a horse?!"
OMG! Kimfer was sooo glad that she asked the clerk and not her (which might have happened as she was shopping in the horse section) I said I probably would have told her lessons would be a start! lol
She looks lovely--and skinny and YOUNG! Might wanna have a vet look at her, because I'm betting that she's not even 3 yet.
Best of luck to your friends, it sounds like they've upgraded a nice little mare out of a bad location!
So glad you helped to get Grace in a good place. Sounds like the people weren't mean, just a bit ignorant, they did right to get her to a better home. You are a good friend to help out so much, looks like there will be a good ending for your friends and Grace, who seems like a sweetie.
I am also wondering if she has a dorsal stripe... grullas tend to have a darker face and not as much "honey" or that warm bay/brown glow to their body. Remember that grulla is a black horse with dun factor. My bet is on sooty buckskin. She is a cutie either way. Your friends are lucky to have you around to help them out...we've all been there before!
Grace does not have a dorsal stripe. I will try to get some better pictures of her this week during the day.
Thanks everyone for your kind comments on Grace and helping me figure out her color!
She sounds like a sweetheart, and it would be great if you can help your friends out! It also sounds like she is in a better place -- I thought of Lisa's story the minute you mentioned the one strand electric wire too. Ugh.
I've been getting caught up on my blog visits today, and just read Lisa's story this morning. It really upset me and I had to stop and go outside for awhile. I took my camera and spent over an hour out in the pastures, taking pics of the horses, the neighboring cattle, Ringo and sunflowers. It was just what I needed! :)
Re: the job. I worked at the same place for over 8 years in Ohio, so I feel and know your concerns about starting a new job. It can be kind of scary... and the first few days I felt like OMG I am never going to learn all of this. There's a ton to learn about medical insurance and they are all different which of course makes it even harder. But after 8 days there, the pieces are falling into place, and I'm actually liking it very much.
I wish you the best of luck in your search and in your new job, whatever it may be! And I'm here for ya if you need to vent. :)
Well there ya' go...there's my horse for the summer!!!! LOL and just kidding. :)
She sure is a pretty thing, isn't she?? And I am betting that she is a QH/TW cross too, because she is so small. Most TW are huge. I would comment on her coloring, but it looks like everyone else has already. :)
the first thought i had was wow that has been such an act of "gemutlich hasidim".. Hebrew for act of loving kindness
and that wonderful (and probably grateful!) horse
gp
Oh goodness, some people should NOT own horses!!! So they have been riding her and she is not even three yet? She is quite small. Did she come with papers? From how unknowledgeable her previous owners were, I would question her breeding. Well, its a good think you rescued her from that situation!
Wow, interesting post...Keep us posted on Gracies progress! She seems like a nice up and coming...glad she's in a good place.
Five O'Clock Somewhere~ Yes the guy had been riding her, and letting his kids ride her. She is not papered, apparently her mom died right after she was born, she was bottle fed, and he said there was going to be difficulty getting papers on her. To be honest, I don't even know what to believe with this guy. He didn't abuse the horse at all, but he just wasn't "knowledgeable" about horses!
Trying to get caught up over here. Sorry for the late comment. That's a shame about the lack of good fencing for that little mare. Do you know that my neighbor is keeping that grey gelding in that same paddock with the single strand of electric and barb wire? Yep. The only thing he did to 'upgrade' the fencing is to make the posts more upright and to tie white garbage bag strips to it. Can you believe it? I'l have to post photos, but I know it'll just make everyone mad and crazy...like it makes me. I don't know what to do. I've thought of going to the Livestock Board because Animal Control won't do anything. They don't seem to be bothered bu his fencing. gah!
Anyway, it's great that your friend has you around to help them....but don't you think that an untrained very young horse probably isn't the best horse for anyone without much experience? I doubt that mare is barely 3, if she is. I hope they didn't cause any injury by riding her so young either.
You'll have to go at it with the assumption that everything they taught her was wrong, even the saddle training, and that she is a green horse. Your friends are so lucky that you are there to offer hyour guidance and help. I hope they accept your help.
She seems like a sweet horse, although very small, especially standing next to your OH. I'd have never guessed TW, though. She looks more QH, which is what ties into the Oklahoma line breeding. Did you know that Baby Doll's breeding shows Oklahoma Star, too? Her pedigree is Foundation Bred with many well known famous QH and TB horses in her background.
But in this economy, that doesn't seem to matter in trying to sell a horse. Like your friend, people would rather be given a free, untrained, un-registered horse than buy one with a known history and registry.
Keep us updated on this mare. I bet it's going to be an interesting 'ride'. I hope your friend isn't going to use just that little bit of electric wire that that man gave them? I hope they have some safe, serious horse fencing.
