The Tack Shack

I am sure I am not the only one with this problem. It isn't a dilemma this time! I only have 2 horses, but multiple pieces of tack. I am not going to give an exact count on some of my stuff, that would require pen and paper and a trip to the garage to calculate everything I have. But what I do know is, I have ALOT! I could probably open up a used tack shop at this point!

I have 3 saddles. I am down from 4. I finally sold my Circle Y synthetic saddle last fall. We bought it 3 years ago, because all of a sudden we had 2 horses. My trainer had a client that was selling it, it was affordable, blah blah blah. Ok, we used the saddle twice. It did not work on Fritzy. Plus my OH, who weighs approximately 210 lbs, would go to mount, it would slide off to the side of Fritzy. Um, yeah, not going to work. Besides the saddle falling off of Fritzy, my OH said it wasn't "manly" enough. Alright, I get it! My trainer ended up finding another saddle that worked out great!

So why do I need 3 saddles with only 2 horses? We could talk about fit, but that isn't the issue. What happened was, when I got Brandy, I bought a saddle. A Circle Y trail saddle. I made sure it fit her. Well, once her training progressed, I realized that this saddle was not going to work for training, in the arena. The saddle I had bought was made for the trails! Since it has such a high cantle, it put me in a very strange position for loping. My trainer also did not like using my trail saddle for training. So, I had to get another saddle. Here is my trail saddle. It has a very cushiony seat, and it is very heavy, thank goodness for my OH! But I just love it for trail riding, which is what it was made for!

I bought another saddle a couple years ago, just for training. It is a Circle Y Arabian saddle and yes, it fits both my horses! It is much lighter than my trail saddle! No need to have help lifting it onto my horses back! I can actually carry this one with one hand, if I need too! It's not the best looking saddle, and I bought it used but it was worth every penny!

This is also my training saddle, with the bridle I use for training. The bridle is actually the one I first bought when I knew I was getting Brandy. I am so anal, that my bridles have to match my tack. I use dark oil tack on Brandy, she looks better in the dark and Fritzy's tack is a medium oil.

This is Brandy's trail bridle. I really love the look of it.

Most of you have probably already seen Fritzy's bridles from a previous post. But I will show them to you again. Just because I love them so much. Here is Fritzy's training bridle. My trainer uses cavesons for training, so I got into the habit of using them while I work my horses in the arena.

The next 2 pictures are Fritzy's new trail bridles! I am so excited to have 2 different bridles to use!

The saddle we bought for my OH. It wasn't the color we really wanted, a little too red for our liking, but we can't be too picky! This saddle was also bought used and we got it for a great price! Oh yeah, it's another Circle Y! See a trend here? I bought my OH the stirrups, he really wanted them! Actually, I have bought everything for Fritzy but the saddle and hoof trimming/shoes! I guess this is why she is actually my horse!

Ok, so we are done with saddles and bridles. Shall we talk about saddle pads? This is where I would have to go out to the garage to count how many I have, so I will guess. I have close to 10 saddle pads. Now why does a girl need 10 saddle pads with only 2 horses? I'll tell you why. I started out using the saddle pad that I won for a high point award as a teenager. It was brand new and stored away in my tack box. I didn't like the colors. So I bought a new one. Didn't like the color, bought another, and so on. I think I am good on saddle pads now. This is probably why in every picture you see of my horses, you'll see a different saddle pad, oh and I use a different saddle pad for the trail and for training! Am I weird?

Halters and leadropes, oh my, you are really going to think I am crazy now. I have 5 halters and lets say 15 leadropes. Paint Girl, remember you only have 2 horses! I seem to forget this all the time!

Horse blankets, I have 2 winter blankets, 2 rain sheets, 2 flysheets, 1 stable blanket. Not bad, I am starting to stick to the 2 horses only plan!

Cinches, 5. I actually loaned Pony Girl some stuff when she first started leasing her boy, a cinch, a saddle, a breastcollar, a leadrope, anything else you can remember sis?

I even have an english saddle sitting in my garage. I haven't ridden english in 17 years. My trainer brought one over for me and my sis to try out. I haven't even tried it on my horses yet! I'd still like to buy it, but now won't be able to afford it. I would love to ride english again someday!

Bits, I have one on each bridle, so 5 bits that I use all the time and I have many others that have piled up over the years. My horses are still in snaffles. Eventually I'd like to get them in another bit, but that probably won't happen. The girls do just fine in snaffles anyways. They are very responsive!

I think that about sums up the excess tack I have in my garage, now you see why I would like to have that barn with my own tack room! What I could do with my own tack room, is buy more tack! OH, can you add this to your to-do list? Please!!
On another note, remember this sweet angel, Domino?

I had to take him to the vet this morning. On Tuesday night I noticed his back right leg was injured. He had puncture wounds on the inside and outside of his leg, like something bit onto his leg. It was draining all sorts of stuff last night. So my boy got to take a car ride to the vet. Thank goodness it wasn't serious, and we caught it before it abcessed. He will be on antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory. He looks funny now, he has a shaved leg and you can really see his wound. He is not a happy camper!

I have 2 horses (one I barely ride, and one that is not broke enough to ride) and one saddle so maybe it evens out!

Wow! I see we are much alike =) We have 4 saddles right now, 2 horses, only one of which we ever actually ride. I am not sure how many bridles we have. Funny story - my hubby HAD to have a "noseband" as he called it when we bought one of the bridles (we only ride western) it was funny when he was trying to pick one out and the lady was helping him. Anyway...I am not sure how many blankets or bits we have....I think we have 4 or 5 halters...only 2 or 3 lead ropes though! =)

Hope Domino gets feeling better soon. Oreo had something similar happen to him last year, but it wasn't too bad and now he is all better. Have a great night!

Poor kitty! Good that you caught it early, these things can get nasty fast. Glad she got away from whatever it was that caught her!

Am I the only horse person in the world who doesnt collect tack? It seems that most of us do but I tend to get rid of things I dont use often...oh and I loose my fair share of things too! Plus being at big barns thing go missing or get "borrowed".

What is the brand of your trail saddle? Is it a Tucker?

Yes, the horsey stuff is SO easy to collect! Of course, I have some stuff I am no longer using. Kind of like clothes I guess.....some things you buy and get double your money on, others you barely wear.
Sorry to hear about Domino, I wonder what got him? Scary! I hope he's on the mend soon! No more million dollar cat stories from you! xo

lawl!

The title "tack shack" made me think of "snack shack" NSFW just telling you, or small children that can read XD hahah

But seriously I could saddle and bridle 6 horses and harness 3.
Don't even get me started on halters. I have more than I can shake a stick at. I just got rid of 2.

AHCM- my trail saddle is a Circle Y. It looks alot like a Tucker. I love it! I get comments on it all the time when I go trail riding!

Poor Domino, I hope he heals up quickly.

I wrote a post (quite awhile ago) about tack. Here's a quick summary:
Saddles- 4 Western(down from 5) + 1 unused English saddle.
Pads- 5 or 6
Blankets- about 7
Bridles- at least 8, may be(probably is) more.
Bits- 1 one each bridle plus some in the cupboard.
Halters- 8 (I think)
Leads- 10ish
Brushes- hahahahahahahahaha lets not go there! :)
Reins- OMG TOO dang many. I think there were between 15 and 20. Enough that I told Kimfer that if I was even looking at reins without a good reason to buy them she had permission to slap me! lol

I don't have that much, but if I had the funds, Dusty would be the best dressed on the trail!!!

Sounds like, that instead of buying fancy clothes and jewelry for yourself, you indulge in horsewear. lol! wowzers, you got a lot of tack...but you've been at this horse thing a lot longer then me, so it just makes sense.
It's all about finding what works best for you ad your horse, right?

For my one horse, I've got one saddle, one bareback pad, 3 halters (2 web and 1 rope), 4 lead ropes, lunge rope, 2 saddle pads, 2 bridles...and all sorts of misc trail stuff (like packs and bags, etc).

I do have a little tack room inside my barn. The horse stuff only takes up one corner, while the rest is llama/goat/sheep stuff. Oh and feed containers.

I liked your post title. Tack Shack. Maybe when you finally get your barn tack room, you can get a sign made that says just that. :)

I'm sorry about Domino. Poor kitty. Hope Domino heals up quickly.

ps Thanks for your e-mail. It meant a lot. I will try to reply to it this weekend when I have more time. What you were talking about it is a big issue for me right now, as you know. Thanks for your understanding and support. It's nice to know I'm not alone.

Oh boy don't even get me started on counting things. I try not to. I know exactly what I have and if anything is missing - I just try not to count things, it make me feel like a hoarder. Like bridles as soon as you mentioned them I got a sick feeling in my stomach - cause I was tempted to count them and knew I would not be happy with the results so had to make myself not count them.

Oh well...there are worse things to have in over abundance right?

Any kind of shopping can be fun, even if it's for HORSES! It's just a good thing you have all of this stuff already now that your finances are going to be tighter. Let's just pretend you were thinking ahead right, LOL!!!

Us chicks sure do know how to accessorize! I currently have only one saddle (that needs to be replaced), but I have big plans for overhauling my "tack shack" in the very near future! I love that you have a couple of different trail bridles to choose from, depending on your mood that day! ;)

Oh man! I'm so not going to count or document in any way. I try to avoid actually realizing how much stuff I've managed to collect. At our old house we had stuff in the trailer, in the barn, in the basement, then some stuff still at my parents and stuff at the barn I boarded at. When we got it all in one place at this house I about crapped my pants.

I think blankets/coolers are my main poison. Or maybe it's bits. Or headstalls. Or reins. Or SMB boots. Crap. I guess they are all poison! It's just so much fun to collect! The boyfriend laughs at me every time I come home with something new, but he doesn't complain (too much) cuz he steals all my stuff.

Aren't Circle Y's the bestest? I have an arab tree Circle Y from the mid '90's that's the softee leather and I absolutely LOVE it! Apparently, their saddle designer went over to Reinsman, which I found out after I had painstakingly picked out a new saddle that wasn't Circle Y. hehe And saddles and headstalls and whatever else are *always* better if they are matchy matchy!!!

Hope Domino heals up fast! I'll stop babbling now. ;)

I think you are right..for a horse person going into a tack store.. is like an alcoholic going into the liqueur store!!!

We can always think of something we need!.. ( I got a new bit and headstall last week..did I really need it.. well..I thought so!

I have 2 Crate saddles which I love, an old English saddle, a pony saddle.. I have sold off saddles I had online, had a really nice dressage saddle..aah.. what was I thinking? I have little Paint Horses.. primarily ride western..sold on Craig's list!

So.. it doesn't stop as you get older!

I have 3 saddles for 2 horses. Murphy needed a wider tree and my husband needed a bigger seat so that's one saddle. Murphy has actually trimmed down so I can use my smaller saddle on both horses. The 3rd saddle is my English saddle, that I use occasionally when I want more contact (or I'm too tired to lift the western saddle). I don't have a whole lot of other stuff. I'd like to get a prettier bridle but I generally won't buy something new until the old one wears out.

Don't you just hate it when your cat gets in a fight! I still haven't let my cat out since her last fight. So tired of vet bills...

Pretty tack! I don't know the ins and outs of good tack, but it sure looks good to me. :)
